This eminently Art Deco establishment is impressive for its imposing architecture. You'll find yourself in an Art Deco ocean liner as soon as you enter the lobby of this rather charming establishment. It's a place that amateur and professional photographers will find particularly interesting. The Royal Palm is a pleasant and fuss-free hotel if you want to spend some time in Miami. All aboard!

    Location 7.87 /10

The Royal Palm is a short walk from Ocean drive. Indeed, just a 10-minute walk will take you to this emblematic avenue of Miami. Just next to the establishment lies the impressive Loews hotel. There are numerous restaurants, bars and shops to enjoy in the surrounding area. Everything is accessible on foot, except the airport, which is a 30 to 40-minute taxi ride away.

    Accommodation 7.90 /10

This imposing, 17-storey, white building has 409 rooms all decorated in a well thought out and modern style. The atmosphere is best described as being both warm and art deco. The style differs slightly from tower to tower. However, I won't dwell on the room's decor since it is set to change during the summer of 2011. The rooms offer all of the mod-cons, such as a TV, air-conditioning, an expresso machine, a hair-dryer, ironing equipment, a safe, a radio and free Wi-Fi. Most of the rooms have an ocean view and some, located in the original 1939 tower, have a balcony. The rooms of the new tower have only windows and no balconies. The bathrooms are decorated in a simple fashion. They are quite nondescript, with nothing out of the ordinary to speak of. One should however mention the Italian style shower and the hospitality products.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Royal Palm is a totally Art Deco hotel. The hotel is composed of 3 towers, the most recent built in 2007 and the main building dating from 1939. Architecturally, the 1939 tower was chosen to resemble an ocean liner. This can be seen in the lobby in particular, with its photogenic lines and Art Deco setting. The entrance hall features works of art adorning its white walls; this is Miami after all! A long and narrow bar located in the lobby boasts portholes instead of windows. However, the decor of the bar does seem a little quaint and kitsch. For some relaxation after a day at South Beach, why not take a dip in one of the two swimming pools? The bigger one features a pool side bar and wicker sofas. The second is slightly smaller and is nestled in a quieter area of the hotel. The more energetic guests may want to visit the gym, hidden outside, near the main swimming pool. If you feel like a drink in the evening as the sun sets, head for one of the lounges in the various hotel towers, and enjoy the comfort of one of the large sofas that awaits you there. The architectural qualities of the hotel will not fail to impress you. You'll feel like a passenger on an ocean liner.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The hotel has only one restaurant that opens for breakfast (buffet), lunch (à la carte) and dinner (à la carte). The room is an open space that looks out onto the smallest of the two pools. Large windows let in the Miami sun and the decor is modern and warm (brown, black and white tones). It also boasts and artistic touch, with Britto paintings adorning the walls. The cuisine is American, but also quite light.

    Spa 7.7 /10

The spa is on the 4th floor and is a real haven of peace with a view of the ocean. You'll feel at ease the moment you arrive as you breathe in the aroma of essential oils. The massages and treatments are good quality and personalised. The seawater treatments are one of the centre's specialities, along with Doctor Oz's IV treatments to replenish your body's stores (that's what he says anyway). Numerous conferences are organised on health foods, while those who enjoy relaxation classes can attend some incredibly soothing sessions (those who have never tried any should give it a go). A calming area that opens out onto a superb terrace.

    Beach

The beach is directly in front of the hotel, you just need to walk through the little gate to the left of the pool to feel the white sand beneath your feet.

The rooms are to undergo renovation work during the summer of 2011.

The Z-Ocean hotel is a simple and pleasant hotel that makes for an ideal base to explore the city from. It doesn't have all the services one might expect from one of the swankier five star hotels0, but it is comfortable and the service is very friendly and efficient. Found in the heart of South Beach, just opposite the renowned Art-Deco Jerry's Deli on Collins Avenue, the hotel is well-situated for those of you who want to have it all. Miami Beach is a five minute walk away and all major sights in South Beach are within walking distance. We enjoyed this no-fuss hotel very much and would be one of our first choices for holidaymakers on a budget wanting a little intimacy in a small hotel not far from the beach.

Slightly out of place among Ocean Drive's colourful Art-Deco hotels, the upscale ethical and art-loving boutique Betsy (a Small Leading Hotel of the World) is one of our favourite establishments in Miami. Combining colonial cool with contemporary casual, this is the ideal place to stay for a wide-ranging clientele including yummy mummies who thank the bulky doormen with a "Thank you honey-bunny". An attractive hotel that has mastered understated elegance down to a T, has all the facilities you would want on holiday, from a rooftop spa to a renowned steakhouse, a funky chic bar to its very own art collection, the Betsy is one of the more pleasant places to stay in Miami. Located right across from Miami Beach, a stay here is ideal for couples as well as families with a big budget as a stay here does not come cheap.

This four star art-gallery cum hotel is one of a kind in the world, some say, and should definitely be visited for tea or even just to have a nose around even if you are not staying here. The four-star Sagamore is an original Art-Deco hotel situated right in the heart of South Beach on Miami Beach. Its multi-million dollar art collection makes it what it is as honestly, the rooms could do with a renovation. However if you like to be surprised at every turn, either by a mid-size helicopter on a terrace or video installations leading up to the pool, then this is the place for you.

The Ritz-Carlton South Beach is one of three Ritz-Carlton hotels in Miami along with Coconut Grove and Key Biscayne. The South Beach hotel is unique in that it is right on Miami Beach. The pool sits on a raised platform that sits just above the beach so that guests get an unobstructed view of the Atlantic. The upsides are the large pool and the DiLido's restaurant, which is the only one of its kind to be so close to the beach. The hotel is an original neo-Art Baroque build that used to be called 'Di Lido' when it was first built back in the 50s. It is perfect for families and there is a 'VIK' program, which stands for 'Very Important Kids', specially put together for various age groups. Due to its central location, right at the heart of the Art Deco district, a five minute walk from the Lincoln pedestrian area and five minutes from Ocean Drive, it is ideal for guests looking for centrally-located good quality accommodation with facilities that are good overall.

There isn't much to distinguish it from the rest of the hotels on the Ocean Drive strip, unless you know a little history behind this small boutique Art Deco hotel. Owned by singer Gloria Estefan, the Cardozo was one of the first deco hotels to be saved by the South Beach preservation group, the hotel has become somewhat of a star as it has welcomed various film crews for blockbusters like There's Something About Mary - the 'hair gel' scene was actually filmed here! The good quality accommodation makes up for the fact that apart from the restaurant there are no facilities at this hotel, however you must have the budget to stay here as the rooms are not of the best-value. Ideally located, this hotel could suit a wide ranging clientele for whom accommodation and location are priorities.

Casa Tua is an exclusive sophisticated haven of peace and tranquillity. Located in a quiet South Beach backstreet, it is a short walk away from Collins Avenue and Miami Beach. This five suite 'home away from home' is modelled on a private Italian villa. The aim here is to provide the best possible service to guests requiring nothing but the best. Every aspect of the guest's stay is taken care of, from the pillows they prefer to their favourite flowers. There isn't much in the way of in-house services here, but what there is, is simply fantastic. The restaurant, with seating inside and in the pretty garden has been thought out down to perfection. Casa Tua is perfect for guests with very high accommodation standards and who do not care much for spas, pools, and the like.

Sexy, cool, yet discreet, the hotel's unrivalled calm and hushed atmosphere held within its seemingly fortified walls gives the utmost sense of privacy and intimacy. Like no other hotel in Miami, the sophisticated Setai proudly boasts a Leading Hotel of the World label and banks its success on simple, calm and soothing elements throughout, making it a perfect little haven of peace and quiet for guests needing to get away from it all whilst still having access to Miami's buzzing nightlife and beach scene. Although the hotel does welcome families, it is recommended that the children be extremely well-behaved to avoid any steely glares from Miami's high-society.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.
