If you're in Miami and looking for exotic, green, and lush surroundings, head for The Palms Hotel. Its quaint atmosphere will immerse you in a pleasantly laidback world. To be enjoyed without moderation. The only snag is that the hotel is a bit far from Miami's sights of interest.

    Location 6.0 /10

The Palms Hotel stands on Collins Avenue, to the north of this huge thoroughfare, at quite a long distance from Ocean Drive. To get to the Art Déco neighbourhood, you must take a taxi or walk for at least half an hour. It's located in a quiet neighbourhood. The Riu hotel is concealed just behind the Palms Hotel. You won't find many shops, restaurants, or bars in the surrounding area so you'll have to look outside of the neighbourhood.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The interior decorating of the 251 rooms (all renovated in 2009) is slightly disappointing; we expected a little more class and refinement. The style is classically chic, and the interior has little to do with the tropical theme of the hotel. Only some rare touches of green, turquoise, orange, and the wooden fan and a few flower arrangements hint at the exotic atmosphere. Furthermore, the rooms are quite spacious and make you feel at home. This is the US, the land of all that's modern, and all the level of comfort one would expect in an American hotel room is present: flat-screen TV, coffee and tea tray, iPod dock, and free Wi-Fi. If you don't like air-conditioning, there is a great fan for you to use. As for the bathroom, it's rather small but equipped with a nice Italian-style tropical rain shower. The accommodation units boast a modern interior.
Only two suites have balconies, which is really shame. It would be nice if all of the guests could enjoy the Miami climate while comfortably sitting on their own private balcony.

    Overview 7.70 /10

This beautiful building was built in 1948 (and renovated in 2009) and is a refreshing added touch of greenery in Miami. The Palms Hotel strives to be an environmentally friendly hotel and participates in a program that aims to protect the natural resources of Florida. It's one of the 14 hotels and bed & breakfast establishments in the city to have received the Green Lodging Program label. This program takes many factors into consideration, such as water management, recycling, the use of paper.... and the concierge services at each establishment can suggest a few environmentally friendly excursion ideas.
As far as the atmosphere is concerned, The Palms has managed to create a quaint tropical setting. Large wooden fans, wicker furniture, a terrace with a relaxing rocking chair, dark panelling, and flower patterns on the armchairs make for a relaxed and tropical atmosphere. The hotel is generally a peaceful place, with a calm and pleasant ambience like you might expect to find in a colonial mansion. Unfortunately, the lobby is a little dark, but we liked the interior of the bar and the terrace. The garden is a haven of peace where you can read, chat, or enjoy a drink, and the swimming pool area is just as pleasant. With deckchairs, hammocks, and even a poster bed, you'll have a large choice of comfortable places to recline in. Plus, there is a bar that will enable you to keep hydrated.
If you feel you're in need of some pampering, head for the spa centre, where massages and body and face treatments are on offer. Turkish baths are even on site for those who feel the need for some heat. The interior of the spa has a pleasant Zen theme and the massage rooms are the perfect place in which to relax. Should you wish to enjoy a massage along with your partner, there are special rooms for couples available. There's even an iPod dock in the treatment room so that you can listen to your favourite tunes. For breakfast there is a special spa menu on offer.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

As meal time approaches, make your way to the splendid Essencia restaurant. It is divided between a dining room and a lush green garden (bamboo, palm tree, banana tree, etc.). There is a lovely veranda where you can sit outdoors and enjoy the chef's cuisine. The restaurant's asset is that it is oriented towards the garden and even shares part of it. The interior stays true to the quaint and tropical style of the hotel. The atmosphere is laidback and relaxing. You'll feel as if you were in the Caribbean.
The Essencia serves refined cuisine based on Mediterranean, Asian, and European flavours. The French chef has a true passion for blending tastes and offering original dishes; you're sure to love everything you try. A selection of organic wines is also on offer. In order to enjoy this relaxed atmosphere for as long as possible, enjoy a drink in the lounge, in the veranda, or at the restaurant bar. You should also note that there is a special spa menu, with fewer calories.
As is customary in the US, the hotel puts on a Sunday Brunch, which is quite an experience. Really very nice.

    To know

There is a nice wooden footpath along the beach that leads all the way to Ocean Drive. It's perfect for a morning run or to enjoy a stroll and take in the sea breeze. It's right opposite the hotel in the direction of the beach. In Florida there are no private beaches, but the hotel does provide some beach equipment, such as deckchairs and sunshades.

The Eden Roc is a legendary hotel that has welcomed many legendary guests; Humphrey Boggart, Lauren Bacall, and Frank Sinatra, among numerous others. It boasts an imposing architecture and high quality facilities. Everything is here for a pleasant stay, but it's a bit far from all of Miami's hustle and bustle. However, it's the perfect place if you're looking to relax.

We really fell in love with this cosy, charming little hotel and its somewhat outdated tropical feel. The restaurant and its terrace area are a great place to relax in the shade of the nearby trees, whilst the lush little green Art Deco-style garden and pool area have a really fresh feel to them. In a nutshell, an unpretentious hotel but a perfectly pleasant place for a quiet stay in Miami.

The Soho Beach House is a charming little hotel located on the quieter part of Collins Avenue. Previously a members-only club, the hotel has been open to the public since October 2010. The hotel is a cross between an old English pub and beach house and sits right on Miami Beach. The quirky touches like the free photo booth and the playful Cowshed products add a contemporary touch. The major advantages here are its spacious, luxury beach house style rooms and its entirely wooden spa. The hotel is intimate yet extremely animated in the lobby area due to the bustling Cecconi's restaurant, which is also open to the public. For those of you looking for peace and quiet and more intimacy, the Soho Beach House isn't the best option, however, complete with a pool, easy beach access, and high quality tastefully decorated rooms, the hotel is ideal for couples and groups of friends looking for a lively base in a quieter part of South Beach to explore the city from.

It is therefore recommended for clubbers and young people.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.

The Catalina is a cheap establishment that screams motel rather than hotel. It is not particularly clean or pleasant. It does however have a great location for holidaymakers wanting to be right at the heart of the South Beach action as it sits a 10 minute walk away from the beach on Collins Avenue, the main road running right through Miami. The hotel is an original Art-Deco build that is made up for three separate hotels that sit side by side: the Catalina, the Dorset and Maxine's. Each has its own distinct atmosphere but check-in is done in the central building. The hotel is ideal for guests on a tight budget or who turn up at the last minute without a booking. The hotel is noisy and crowded and is not recommended for children due to some of the guests' behaviour around the pool in the evenings.

The Versace Mansion has been converted into a small and very exclusive hotel now known as The Villa by Barton G. As you can imagine, there is nothing ordinary about this little haven of peace, quiet, fashion and flamboyancy! True to Mr Versace himself, Barton G has kept his spirit alive by keeping everything as it was with a few minor alterations. You can rent Madonna's suite (the only one with a bath tub) or Elton John's, both of whom were the designer's very close friends. For those of you who can afford it, this is a beautiful hotel to stay at for its stunning pool with 24 carat gold mosaics and meticulous personalised service. A world-famous landmark worth stopping by for a couple of nights.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.

It is the latest addition to its Los Angeles namesake. SLS is expanding across the country. Soon it will be possible to travel across America from one SLS to another! And life will be designer! Hats off to the artist for this magnificent work of art! It would take just one tiny adjustment to make this a superb hotel - bigger guest rooms.
