Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Pelican is without doubt one of the best hotels that you will find in the centre of busy Ocean Drive. It is not a luxury hotel, but the small boutique hotel, created by Diesel creator, Renzo Rosso, is well worth the stay if you want to be at the heart of the action and don't want to spend too much. The Pelican has existed as a hotel since the 30s and is somewhat of a landmark, although it is fairly quiet. Every room is decorated in a different theme, from rainforest to Hollywood. If you don't end up staying here, we strongly recommend you stop by to sample the restaurant's pancakes - they are the most delicious pancakes you will try in Miami; make sure you work up an appetite first though!

    Location 7.0 /10

Located right in the middle of the Ocean Drive action in South Beach. The Pelican is lost in the long chain of hotels and restaurants, so if you don't know what you're looking for, you could easily miss it. Miami Beach in just across the road. Parallel to Ocean Drive is Collins Avenue, the longest road in Miami, which runs up all the way north.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The hotel has 29 rooms including the two penthouses on the fourth floor. There are five categories: Penthouse, Deluxe Queen, Ocean Front Queen, Deluxe Twin, Ocean Front King suite, Ocean Front Queen suite. The original aspect of this hotel is in the funky out of this world interior decoration of each one of its rooms. They all have well-suited names like 'Love, Peace and Leafforest' or 'Me Tarzan, You Vain'. The furniture can feel a little rickety and the rooms can smell a little musty as the structure is fairly old. However, this does not deter from the fact that the rooms are fun and playful, which is reason enough to stay at here! Otherwise the bathrooms have recently been renovated and although small, are well-appointed; we loved the bathroom fittings, which look like the 30s originals. There are C.O. BIGELOW® products in all rooms as well as plasma or LCD TV/ Audio dock for iPhone or iPod, refrigerator (with daily complimentary water), and an electronic safe. All the rooms are comfortable and really immerse the guests in their very distinct atmopsheres. Some of the rooms tend to be a little dark, so if moody lighting isn't your thing, opt for the brighter double windowed room, 'Me Tarzan, You Vain'. Room service is available until midnight every day.

    Overview 5.70 /10

The hotel opened in 1994 as a Diesel property, but originally opened in 1939 as a hotel. The name hasn't changed since its original opening. A small boutique hotel spread over four floors; you will find its restaurant out front with indoor and outdoor seating. There is a pleasant terrace area for people-watching. The lobby area is accessed via the restaurant entrance and is found to the right after the bar area. The furniture in the small lobby is emblematic of the Art Deco movement and adds a fun touch to the rest of the hotel. The rooms are found on the first floor up. The penthouse floor has two apartments - one that is open for bookings; the other is Renzo Rosso's personal apartment, which he visits a few times a year. Special guests can book this apartment depending on availability. A veritable Art Deco gem, Mr Rosso's apartment is worth booking if you have the budget and need a large space with three bedrooms.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Like most places offering food on Ocean Drive, The Pelican Café serves Italian food with an international touch. Over 150 selections are featured on the impressive International wine list, which has been bestowed the Award of Excellence by the Wine Spectator every year since 2003. The popular bar features an interesting list of house cocktails, all using premium liquors, including mojitos, caipirinas, and caipiroskas. The café is open from 7:30-11:00am for breakfast, from 11:00am-6:00pmfor lunch, and from 6:00-midnight for dinner (or until 1:00am Fri-Sat). The ingredients here tend to be fresh and tasty. The food here is some of the best value you will find on the Ocean Drive strip. If in doubt about anything, speak to Brendon at the café, who will be more than happy to help!

    Beach 7.70 /10

Although the hotel is not directly on the beach, it is only across the road. Miami Beach is pretty much the same all the way along: a long and wide stretch of sand with reasonably clear water. You won't see any locals in the sea until at least April though, but the 'snowbirds', as the Miami crowds call the New Yorkers, who come to Miami for a spot of sunshine during their big freeze period are happily splashing around; this does mean that the beach is rarely crowded at the beginning of the year. The hotel doesn't have a designated area on the beach, but it does give beach towels and chairs.

    To know

The hotel does not have any other facilities apart from its restaurant, but there are a number of gyms around South Beach for gym fiends. It is also possible to book various spa treatments at some of the larger hotels if you are in need of a little pampering. The front desk is open 24 hours. Guests receive complimentary beach towels and chairs. Complimentary Wi-fi is available throughout the hotel.

If you're in Miami and looking for exotic, green, and lush surroundings, head for The Palms Hotel. Its quaint atmosphere will immerse you in a pleasantly laidback world. To be enjoyed without moderation. The only snag is that the hotel is a bit far from Miami's sights of interest.

The Howard Johnson is probably not a great place to stay if you wish to make the most of Miami Beach, because the hotel is some way away. Its decor hardly makes it a place you are likely to linger, either. However, if you love beautiful old American cars and are nostalgic for the 1950s in general, sit yourself down at one of the Cadillacs in the restaurant and soak up the feel of the United States in the 1950's.

It boasts an imposing architecture and high quality facilities. Everything is here for a pleasant stay, but it's a bit far from all of Miami's hustle and bustle. However, it's the perfect place if you're looking to relax.

The Soho Beach House is a charming little hotel located on the quieter part of Collins Avenue. Previously a members-only club, the hotel has been open to the public since October 2010. The hotel is a cross between an old English pub and beach house and sits right on Miami Beach. The quirky touches like the free photo booth and the playful Cowshed products add a contemporary touch. The major advantages here are its spacious, luxury beach house style rooms and its entirely wooden spa. The hotel is intimate yet extremely animated in the lobby area due to the bustling Cecconi's restaurant, which is also open to the public. For those of you looking for peace and quiet and more intimacy, the Soho Beach House isn't the best option, however, complete with a pool, easy beach access, and high quality tastefully decorated rooms, the hotel is ideal for couples and groups of friends looking for a lively base in a quieter part of South Beach to explore the city from.

Cool, sassy and fun, the W South Beach is without doubt one of the highest-profile hotels in Miami and not without good reason. The most impressive aspect of the hotel is its $60 million collection of contemporary art alongside its impressive range of high quality facilities such as its bar, restaurants and pool. It is also located on the beach in a quieter part of SoBe. The hotel is one of the largest in the city and so lacks a little intimacy. A major downer however, is that the rooms severely lack ergonomics and the high quality finish that is expected for the prices charged. Otherwise the gimmicky hotel is fun, young and dynamic and is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele from groups of friends to families and couples.

Sexy, cool, yet discreet, the hotel's unrivalled calm and hushed atmosphere held within its seemingly fortified walls gives the utmost sense of privacy and intimacy. Like no other hotel in Miami, the sophisticated Setai proudly boasts a Leading Hotel of the World label and banks its success on simple, calm and soothing elements throughout, making it a perfect little haven of peace and quiet for guests needing to get away from it all whilst still having access to Miami's buzzing nightlife and beach scene. Although the hotel does welcome families, it is recommended that the children be extremely well-behaved to avoid any steely glares from Miami's high-society.

As you can imagine, there is nothing ordinary about this little haven of peace, quiet, fashion and flamboyancy! True to Mr Versace himself, Barton G has kept his spirit alive by keeping everything as it was with a few minor alterations. You can rent Madonna's suite (the only one with a bath tub) or Elton John's, both of whom were the designer's very close friends. For those of you who can afford it, this is a beautiful hotel to stay at for its stunning pool with 24 carat gold mosaics and meticulous personalised service. A world-famous landmark worth stopping by for a couple of nights.

Without doubt one of our favourite hotels, the very stylish Viceroy Miami has it all with interiors by Kelly Wearstler and a spa designed by Philippe Starck that will wow you over and over again. Although a little bit big to be defined as a boutique hotel, everything has been carefully studied to give the same impact design-wise. Throw in the flawless service, the spacious rooms and the incredible food at the Eos restaurant, the Viceroy Miami runs right into our top three hotels in Miami. The hotel is located Downtown, far from the South Beach hubbub, so it isn't the best choice for those of you looking for a hotel centered around a beach atmosphere, but if you plan on hiring a car, the journey is worth it if what you are looking for is excellence from house-keeping to design. For those of you with young families, the hotel is a lot more child friendly than its quirky design lets on. With the longest roof-top swimming pool in Florida, if not the entire United States, kids will be enthralled for hours.
