Nestled in the heart of a vast tropical park, the Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa is located on the verge of the magnificent Diani beach. Opened in 2005, it is certainly one of the best hotels on the southern coast of Mombasa. Comfort and rest are guaranteed in this serene atmosphere, animated by a few activities. It will be to the liking of couples, as well as to this of families looking for quiet holidays.

Located 21 miles south of Mombasa and 28 miles from the airport. It takes a little more than an hour and a half to get there. Travel time depends on the schedule of ferries, and especially on the number of people who board!
The Diani Reef has 143 rooms: from standard rooms to the presidential suite! The external corridors leading to the rooms have no windows but are still air-conditioned. Guests accommodated on upper floors can use a lift serving all parts of the hotel. The room is spacious. A small sitting area is located right next to the large bay windows. The light-coloured wooden furniture highlights the blue shade colours on the bedspread and the curtains. There is everything you need: a mosquito net, a free safe, television, a mini-bar and a telephone line for direct international calls. Addicts of laptops can connect to the Internet, as all rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi (available for additional payment). The room service available 24/7 takes care of all your wishes. You can even have your shoes polished! The bathroom is not very spacious, but the bright marble allows for good access of sunlight. It is equipped with a hair dryer, welcome products from the hotel and even a corkscrew hung on the wall! The hotel provides for all the comfort of its clients: Some rooms have a double bed, and others have twin beds. We advise you to take a room on a higher floor to get a good view onto the sea.
You have not entered the hotel yet that a sign outside sets the tone: a huge white sail indicates the entrance of the building. Here, customers are welcomed with a glass of champagne. The floor of the lobby is simply a large basin with glass bottom: several fish are swimming in the water quietly and peacefully. The reception desk is guarded by two huge swahili guards made of terra cotta. This vast hall boasts a cosy atmosphere thanks to its black and white furniture. The roof is designed in bee balm beams, protected by makuti. The four corners of the room are decorated with small palm trees. You access the rest of the hotel through a walkway running above a charming flowery pond that supports the weight of a great baobab. The modern architecture of the Diani Reef is emphasized by touches of Africa. The hotel has two swimming pools. The first one is crossed at various places by small wooden bridges. Its rounded shapes are propped entirely on the abundant vegetation, which is very well maintained Alongside the pool bar, it is possible to bask in the sun in the adjacent jacuzzi. The second swimming pool is located near the spa. In order to respect the tranquillity of the place, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied to bathe. The Nirvana Health and Wellness Spa is the largest spa on the Kenyan coast and certainly the most pleasant. Its interior courtyard exudes an atmosphere of tranquility. The central patio fountain allows water to flow gently along the walls of a large jar. Surrounded by sprouting cocos, the bar enables guests to have a drink after a treatment. A large resting room faces the Indian Ocean. The experienced masseuses use products branded Lilian Terry. The center offers a multitude of care treatments: youth stimulating treatment, reflexology, exfoliation, Cleopatra milk bath... Sunburns would be carefully treated here!
Food and drink
Three restaurants, three different environments. The Coral Rock Cafe is the largest. The tables are arranged on two levels. Open onto outside, it is possible to have all three daily meals on the terrace. The pastel shades of pink of the furniture match perfectly with the reflection of the ocean. The restaurant operates buffet-style. Open from 7.00am to 11.00pm, small cravings will be filled up with pastries, ice cream or fresh homemade bread. The Fins Sea Food and Grill is a restaurant that serves à la carte, offering Mediterranean cuisine at noon but also specialties of seafood for dinner. The bar counter is surrounded by clams installed in the sand. A very pleasant setting to have a meal and contemplate the nearby sea. The Sake Oriental Restaurant enjoys a fine reputation. It is known as the best Asian restaurant on the coast. Japanese, Chinese or Indian cuisine will be served on the very floor, according to the Asian tradition. Coffee tables are surrounded with comfortable cushions. An interior garden adds charming final touches to the place. Drinks can be ordered at the Pool Bar. What a delight to drink a cocktail sitting in the water! As for sports, you can watch your favourite team's matches at the Sports Bar. For tea time but also for the piano bar, visit the Zebra Square Bar: a safari ambience with its large sofas in zebra tapestry. The ambience of a lounge in a very intimate bar. And for exciting evenings, visit the Dunes Night Spot open from 10.00pm. This theatre hall offers performances and turns into a dance floor. You cannot help but enjoy a nice little cocktail!
Many hotels are located along the Diani beach, but this one is one of the few to have provided deckchairs on the sand, finally! The deckchairs are separated to guarantee decent privacy to holidaymakers. The blue towels spread on the beige mattresses match in a beautiful harmony with the colour of white sand and the azure blue of the ocean. Next to the sailing club, there are large rest-beds where it is pleasant to take a short nap in the shade. Those being sensitive to the cold would not resist the water temperature! Due to tides, it is difficult to bathe before the water gets high again. The coral reef is not very far, you will then find some dead corals and some algae along the shore. But then they give way to sand. Swimming is not supervised by a swimming instructor, but actually the risk is not big: the current is not strong and the beach is not very windy.
The hotel is well situated. Only 0.5 mile away you will find the Barclay's bank, even though the hotel has its own exchange bureau. The hospital in Diani is also nearby. In addition to the pleasant setting of its various restaurants, the hotel organises dinners around the swimming pool depending on the weather, that is favorable almost every day. The Coco Jumbo Kid's Club welcomes children and offers many distractions to them: building of sand castles, treasure hunts, films, games, drawings... All these activities enable customers not to notice the presence of the youngest.
Built in the traditional Swahili style, the Southern Palms Beach Resort is located on the edge of Diani Beach. It is a big structure, but very well equipped. Familes will enjoy their holidays in this welcoming place.
Located in a very beautiful tropical garden, the Leopard Beach Resort constitutes a beautiful set of buildings in traditional Swahili architecture. The hotel has a superb spa, which has been recently completed (November 2006). The place is perfect for relaxing vacations, for both couples or families, but there is no kid's club.
The LTI Kaskazi Beach Hotel operates as a club. A team of some twenty people are involved in organising entertainment all day for customers. The hotel is frequented by many European clients. This hotel is certainly appropriate for families.
The Ocean Village Club is a hotel belonging to the Paladien chain, located on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few hotels on the coast to have retained a human scale. Tranquillity is the keyword for this place. Those in search of rest and little entertainment will be satisfied, both couples and families.
One of four Sentido Neptune resorts on the Mombasa coast, the Village is, accommodation-wise, perhaps the least impressive of those properties. On the other hand, it is also right beside its sister hotel the Sentido Neptune Paradise, meaning Village guests may make use of Paradise's facilities; almost like two hotels for the price of one! A great option for families, its big pluses are its range of activities and its position on a stunning stretch of Galu Beach, a great setting for those holiday snaps that will take pride of place in the family photo album.
One of the oldest hotels on the Mombasa south coast, the Baobab is something of an institution, still going strong after 36 years. Traditionally a hit with German holidaymakers who had always thought it "their hotel," the Baobab is now a place where tourists flock to from all over Europe. Large and unpretentious, this all inclusive beach resort is all about the wide range of activities it offers its guests, while the animation team is excellent, making the Baobab a great choice for families.
The Galu Beach Retreat is a small, crowd-free resort boasting friendly staff and an emphasis on total relaxation. This is an ideal resort for couples looking for a romantic getaway in a simple, fuss-free setting. For those who need their nightlife fix, the bars and clubs of Diani are mere minutes away.
Ageing and somewhat neglected, the Shéshé Baharini has the potential to be a charming beach resort, and it probably was, back in the day. The foundations are there but for now, Shéshé's biggest concern should be a much-needed facelift. On the other hand, its location on one of Mombasa's most pristine beaches might have you turn a blind eye to its tired state.

Almanara Diani Beach Resort
Value for money8.8
Just try and keep yourself from ooh-ing and aah-ing at the Almanara, for not only are the villas stunning, but the attention to detail that has gone into their decoration is quite impressive. This is one of the premier luxe choices in the Mombasa region and it's not hard to see why. But even if the utter fabulousness is there, we couldn't help but feel that there was something quite 'Western' about it. That said, if you're after dashing good looks and all the bells and whistles that go along with it, you'll certainly find it at the Almanara.

Serena Beach Hotel and Spa
Value for money7.35
The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is often voted as one of the best hotels in Mombasa or even Africa and it's not hard to see why. Scoring points from the get go with its beautiful lobby and entrance, professional welcome and efficient check in, the Serena should not disappoint. A luxury property that remains faithful to the local Swahili architectural style, without going over the top, this medium sized property also does a good job of avoiding the impersonal feel that is often felt at other 'clubs' and resorts of similar size. The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is a mostly tranquil resort, highly suited to couples on romantic getaways.

Msambweni Beach House and Private Villas
Value for money7.32
Private and secluded, this south coast gem is worth the journey to its somewhat off the beaten track location. Small yet stunning, the Msambweni Beach House and Private Villas make a great getaway for couples not bothered about being further away from the action. We appreciated Msambweni's casual luxury in a serene and unpretentious setting. You'll have to be content to do nothing though, for there are few on-site leisure facilities and its distance from the bright lights of Diani means you'll most likely stay put.

The name says it all: "Afrochic," a small boutique hotel featuring 10 rooms that combine different African styles with a hefty dose of chic. In a quiet corner of Kenya's famed Diani Beach, Afrochic Diani is a suitable choice for holidaymakers looking for a romantic escapade. However, little to no entertainment facilities means this might not be the best choice for those with young children.

The Maridadi was our favourite of the Baobab Beach Resort & Spa hotels thanks to its casual luxury and chic simplicity. Built in 2008 as the latest addition to the resort complex, The Maridadi is a great choice for those who demand a large variety of facilities yet their own peaceful corner for relaxation.

An attractive retreat, Kinondo Kwetu is a peaceful accommodation choice popular with fans of simple luxury. A far cry from the large, brash resorts of the Mombasa coast, it certainly offers something a bit different for the holidaymaker. For romantics or families, Kinondo Kwetu caters to both, although some might wonder how honeymooners and families with rowdy children could coexist peacefully in the one place...

An attractive hotel with an array of facilities, the Kolé Kolé is the superior property in the Baobab Beach Resort portfolio. While its popularity could be due to its lovely infinity pool, we fell in love with the rooms; thoughtfully decorated in a chic, contemporary Swahili style. However, while the accommodation is oh-so suitable for a romantic getaway, be aware that many families who stay at the Baobab next door come and take advantage of the Kolé Kolé kid's facilities, quickly turning it into a hive of activity. Excellent, well-maintained amenities but a tranquil romantic hideaway it is not...

Minutes from Mombasa Island yet somehow secluded and off the beaten track, Tijara Beach is a hidden gem, lovingly looked after by owner/managers Ian and Larissa Manson Hart. Less a hotel and more a collection of chic beach bungalows, Tijara Beach is a haven of peace and calm. Many beach resorts may make this claim but in Tijara Beach's case it really is appropriate. Proof that good things come in small packages!
