The LTI Kaskazi Beach Hotel operates as a club. A team of some twenty people are involved in organising entertainment all day for customers. The hotel is frequented by many European clients. This hotel is certainly appropriate for families.

    Location 7.0 /10

The LTI Kaskazi Beach Hotel is located 22 miles from downtown Mombasa. It is located about 28 miles away from the airport. It is difficult to time your travel as it depends on the schedule of ferries and of the number of cars in the queue! It takes, at best, about an hour and a half to get there.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

Built in 1991, the hotel has 191 rooms organised on 4 floors, but there is no elevator. All rooms overlook the Indian Ocean. Some are obviously more exposed than others. The standard room is very functional for families. Indeed, most have a third bed, others have even bunk beds. As we have already said, none of the rooms has television but they are all equipped with a mini-bar (not always in very good condition), a safe (extra charge), air conditioning and a direct telephone line for international calls. However, it is needless to search for a room service menu, as there is none. As for the bathroom, it faces a small dressing-room but it is not very large. a shower, a toilet and a sink, all needing a little refreshment.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The first thing you see of the LTI Kaskazi is its vast lobby. Strong efforts have been made in the decoration of the hotel. Two large statues representing elephants, are installed outside. The oriental architecture of the hotel gives it certain originality. The hall is protected by high ceilings made of makuti.
After seeing this vast place, you may expect the same thing in the rest of the hotel. We were a little disappointed to discover that the common areas were quite small compared to the number of customers. The only swimming pool is certainly pleasant but it offers few deckchairs and sunshades, which are nevertheless, provided free of charge. The animations start here from 10.00am. It is difficult to have a short nap because of the music. There are other deckchairs installed a little farther on the lawn that connects the swimming pool to the beach.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The main restaurant, The Karibu, is certainly one of the most pleasant places of the hotel. It consists of a large room and several small areas where you can find some privacy, whether indoors or outdoors. You can have all meals here, in a One Thousand and One Nights atmosphere thanks to oriental lamps in tones of red and orange. Various thematic buffets are offered: French, African, Indian... For seafood lovers, you should visit the Aladin Restaurant, which serves à la carte dinner. The pool bar serves light lunches. A dance floor is installed right next to it for parties - open until 11.00pm.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The hotel has created an elevated space, higher than the beach, to prevent customers from being disturbed by beach boys. Still, it is a pity not to be able to install any deckchair along the shore. It is still possible to access the Indian Ocean.
It is impossible to swim at low tide. You have to wait for high tide. The latter leaves numerous algae. The coral reef is not very far from the shore. It is therefore preferable, for those with fragile feet, to bathe with sandals so as not to get injured on dead coral.

    To know

The LTI Kaskazi Beach Hotel has the ambition to develop itself. For example, when we visited the hotel (November 2006), none of the rooms had television.

The Ocean Village Club is a hotel belonging to the Paladien chain, located on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few hotels on the coast to have retained a human scale. Tranquillity is the keyword for this place. Those in search of rest and little entertainment will be satisfied, both couples and families.

One of four Sentido Neptune resorts on the Mombasa coast, the Village is, accommodation-wise, perhaps the least impressive of those properties. On the other hand, it is also right beside its sister hotel the Sentido Neptune Paradise, meaning Village guests may make use of Paradise's facilities; almost like two hotels for the price of one! A great option for families, its big pluses are its range of activities and its position on a stunning stretch of Galu Beach, a great setting for those holiday snaps that will take pride of place in the family photo album.

One of the oldest hotels on the Mombasa south coast, the Baobab is something of an institution, still going strong after 36 years. Traditionally a hit with German holidaymakers who had always thought it "their hotel," the Baobab is now a place where tourists flock to from all over Europe. Large and unpretentious, this all inclusive beach resort is all about the wide range of activities it offers its guests, while the animation team is excellent, making the Baobab a great choice for families.

It will be to the liking of couples, as well as to this of families looking for quiet holidays.

Just try and keep yourself from ooh-ing and aah-ing at the Almanara, for not only are the villas stunning, but the attention to detail that has gone into their decoration is quite impressive. This is one of the premier luxe choices in the Mombasa region and it's not hard to see why. But even if the utter fabulousness is there, we couldn't help but feel that there was something quite 'Western' about it. That said, if you're after dashing good looks and all the bells and whistles that go along with it, you'll certainly find it at the Almanara.

The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is often voted as one of the best hotels in Mombasa or even Africa and it's not hard to see why. Scoring points from the get go with its beautiful lobby and entrance, professional welcome and efficient check in, the Serena should not disappoint. A luxury property that remains faithful to the local Swahili architectural style, without going over the top, this medium sized property also does a good job of avoiding the impersonal feel that is often felt at other 'clubs' and resorts of similar size. The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is a mostly tranquil resort, highly suited to couples on romantic getaways.

Small yet stunning, the Msambweni Beach House and Private Villas make a great getaway for couples not bothered about being further away from the action. We appreciated Msambweni's casual luxury in a serene and unpretentious setting. You'll have to be content to do nothing though, for there are few on-site leisure facilities and its distance from the bright lights of Diani means you'll most likely stay put.

An attractive hotel with an array of facilities, the Kolé Kolé is the superior property in the Baobab Beach Resort portfolio. While its popularity could be due to its lovely infinity pool, we fell in love with the rooms; thoughtfully decorated in a chic, contemporary Swahili style. However, while the accommodation is oh-so suitable for a romantic getaway, be aware that many families who stay at the Baobab next door come and take advantage of the Kolé Kolé kid's facilities, quickly turning it into a hive of activity.
