The Ocean Village Club is a hotel belonging to the Paladien chain, located on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few hotels on the coast to have retained a human scale. Tranquillity is the keyword for this place. Those in search of rest and little entertainment will be satisfied, both couples and families.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Ocean Village Club is located 22 miles from downtown Mombasa. There are some 28 miles to reach the airport. However, it takes about an hour and a half to get there, depending on the schedule of the ferry, since the hotel is situated on the southern coast of the country. If there is a lot of traffic, it is possible to spend more time to reach the hotel.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

Initially, the hotel used to be a residential apartment block. Today, all 69 rooms are housed in 36 bungalows surrounded by a beautiful garden, which is very well maintained. All buildings are built on ground floor. Some bungalows have a shared living room, others have a semi-private terrace, but they are all equipped with air conditioning. Most of the rooms are equipped with large canopied beds, overhung by large mosquito nets. This gives a romantic and colonial appearance to the place. All the furniture is made of cedar, teak and camphor. However, you will need to go to the reception to use a safe or to make a phone call. Television addicts will be disappointed. The reason for this is not a limited budget, but a desire of the hotel management to ensure its customers a total withdrawal from the outside world so they can enjoy fully their vacation.
The bathrooms are equipped with a shower, all in pink granite, imported from Italy.
Note that all rooms are offered at the same price and it is up to you to choose the arrangement that suits you best. 17 bungalows are equipped with 2 bedrooms, ideal for families of average size, 8 bungalows with 3 rooms for larger families, and 11 bungalows are equipped with double bedrooms.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Ocean Village Club is hidden in a real tropical forest. The lavish vegetation obscures the entire hotel until you arrive at the reception area. You enter the hotel through a small lobby, with softened lights. The reception desk is located at the back of the room, surrounded on each side by wooden furniture with comfortable white cushions. All this is protected by a roof made of bee balm. The place is very diarist, just as the rest of the hotel.
The various common areas give the impression of having been built around the vegetation, rather than the contrary.
Opened 15 years ago, the hotel is very well maintained. The hotel's manager is constantly on alert in order to ensure the freshness of all places within the hotel premises.
The only swimming pool of the hotel is located near a great baobab, providing shade for people fearing sun rays. Sunshades, towels and wooden deckchairs are arranged around the swimming pool offering a peaceful and relaxing ambience. You would not need to get out your wallet, as all these facilities are free.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The Ocean Village Club hotel has two restaurants. The Makuti, the main restaurant, is installed in a large thatched hut made of local wood. Open onto the outside, it is located near the swimming pool. All the decoration was imported from Thailand. For breakfast (6.30am to 10.00am), you can taste fresh fruit juice, croissants and homemade buns... And for dinner, different buffets are served according to the theme of the evening: African evening, oriental evening... And if the weather allows for it, guests can have dinner under the stars, seated around a huge barbecue in the garden.
The Sails Restaurant serves seafood specialties. It serves food à la carte, facing the Indian Ocean. Fresh lobster, prawns, crabs... A candlelit dinner emphasised by the sound of waves...
The hotel has two bars. The Pool Bar is located right next to the swimming pool, in front of the beach. You can taste very good fruit cocktails there. The place is also open for lunch, with light lunches served from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Gourmands will be happy to taste a variety of pastries and homemade pancakes for afternoon tea. Another bar near the TV room enables you to watch the news or a good film, while having a drink.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The hotel has fitted out an area in retreat from the beach to prevent customers from being disturbed by beach boys. It is quite unfortunate that there are no deckchairs along the shore. Nevertheless, several deckchairs are available on the sand between the palms.
Like the majority of beaches in Kenya, the shoreline is affected by the tidal movements. At low tide, it is difficult to bathe. The hotel informs all customers about the tidal hours of the day. The latter leaves numerous algae. The coral reef is not very far from the shore. It is therefore preferable, for those with fragile feet, to bathe with sandals so as not to get injured on dead coral.
The hotel does not have a sailing club but there is one some 160 feet away from the hotel where guests can go.

    To know

The Ocean Village Club has caught our attention for its tranquillity, its privacy and its peaceful atmosphere. During our visit, the hotel had not yet opened its massage parlour, gym or beauty parlour, but they are now available.
Alike all hotels in Mombasa, you will find small monkeys in the common parts of the hotel. Guards are responsible to control them. Do not give them anything to eat, we remind you that these animals are at home.

The animation team offers activities throughout the day. But the animations remain discreet in order to preserve the tranquility of each guest. During the evenings, shows, local African dances, music and disco parties are organised. Located on the beautiful Diani beach, shopping fans will be pleased to discover, just 5 minutes away from the hotel, several shops and especially the shopping centre of the city.
The hotel has a kid's club, offering service for children from 3 to 12 years of age, every day from 8.00am to 5.00pm.
Careful: lthe hotel closes doors every year, from May to June.

One of four Sentido Neptune resorts on the Mombasa coast, the Village is, accommodation-wise, perhaps the least impressive of those properties. On the other hand, it is also right beside its sister hotel the Sentido Neptune Paradise, meaning Village guests may make use of Paradise's facilities; almost like two hotels for the price of one! A great option for families, its big pluses are its range of activities and its position on a stunning stretch of Galu Beach, a great setting for those holiday snaps that will take pride of place in the family photo album.

One of the oldest hotels on the Mombasa south coast, the Baobab is something of an institution, still going strong after 36 years. Traditionally a hit with German holidaymakers who had always thought it "their hotel," the Baobab is now a place where tourists flock to from all over Europe. Large and unpretentious, this all inclusive beach resort is all about the wide range of activities it offers its guests, while the animation team is excellent, making the Baobab a great choice for families.

Just try and keep yourself from ooh-ing and aah-ing at the Almanara, for not only are the villas stunning, but the attention to detail that has gone into their decoration is quite impressive. This is one of the premier luxe choices in the Mombasa region and it's not hard to see why. But even if the utter fabulousness is there, we couldn't help but feel that there was something quite 'Western' about it. That said, if you're after dashing good looks and all the bells and whistles that go along with it, you'll certainly find it at the Almanara.

The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is often voted as one of the best hotels in Mombasa or even Africa and it's not hard to see why. Scoring points from the get go with its beautiful lobby and entrance, professional welcome and efficient check in, the Serena should not disappoint. A luxury property that remains faithful to the local Swahili architectural style, without going over the top, this medium sized property also does a good job of avoiding the impersonal feel that is often felt at other 'clubs' and resorts of similar size. The Serena Beach Hotel and Spa is a mostly tranquil resort, highly suited to couples on romantic getaways.
