The Columbus Hotel stands close to the small port of Fontvieille and is careful to maintain its peaceful surroundings, away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. The quality of its services, its modern Colonial-style decor and its comfortable and relaxing atmosphere make it one of the leading hotels in Monaco.

    Location 4.43 /10

The hotel is somewhat withdrawn from the extreme luxury and dramatics usually associated with Monaco, making it the hotel of choice for many of the drivers who come here every year for the Monaco Grand Prix and who prefer to stay in quieter surroundings. The hotel is located in the Fontvieille district of the municipality, just a stone's throw from the Louis II football stadium, and the charming little port of Fontvielle, which is home to both large boats, like those found in Port Hercule, as well as smaller ones. Residents of Monaco consider this a rather residential and business district, with many companies based here. Transfer time from Nice airport is around 40 minutes, and the transfer bus stops just opposite the hotel, which is also only a 15 minutes walk from the Monaco railway station. Of course, if you want to travel in style, you could always take the 7 minute helicopter flight between Monaco and Nice, as there is a heliport just next door to the hotel. With this in mind, be aware that daily flights might be a source of disturbance, depending on where you are in the building. There is a pretty little park opposite the hotel where animals roam in relative freedom, with a circus big top in the background and a beautiful rose garden planted in memory of the late Princess Grace to the right.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel's 181 guest rooms come in various categories, namely Classic (without balcony), Deluxe (with balcony and overlooking the rose garden), Junior Suite, Suite and Top Floor Suite. We focused on the Deluxe rooms, which at 27m² are large, light and luminous and feature the same elegant, low key, Neo-Colonial style as the lobby. The rooms are furnished with wooden furniture and have a lounge area complete with a chaise longue. The beds are comfortable, with duvets provided in all the rooms, and amenities include everything you would expect of a hotel of this category and more, from a mini CD-player and games console to bathrobes and slippers. The marble bathrooms are well laid out and nicely decorated but rather small, and all come with a bathtub and tropical shower head. The balconies in these rooms overlook the rose garden and are furnished with a table and chairs. Room service is available 24/7. You may be interested to know that the hotel has 9 guest rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The Colombus - a reference on the part of the owner to Christopher Colombus - opened in 2001 and is a large, white, and rather charmless building, tucked away in a residential neighbourhood. On entering the hotel, guests will find themselves in the small reception area before being sent upstairs where the reception desk is located. Beyond this there is a large and very pleasant area, with low lighting, that serves as the hotel's library-lounge area, furnished with large sofas and comfortable armchairs. The modern and neo-colonial inspired decor here is tasteful and lounge music plays in the background. The dining room and terrace are also located on this floor, while the cosy bar is on the other side. Open from 10:00am to 1:30am, with two large flat screen televisions broadcasting various programmes, the ambience here is created by the rather woody surroundings, the cream-coloured walls, low lighting, armchairs, bench seats, and large central bar and stools, making this a great place for sitting and watching the world go by. The guest rooms are easily accessible, the communal areas minimalist and very tasteful, and the lighting subdued with an orangey tinge. The hotel doesn't have its own pool but shares the original freshwater pool found at the neighbouring residence, just a few metres away and set amid cypress trees and modern architecture. The huge smooth rocks add originality to the ambiance. This pool is open and supervised from 8:00am to 8:00pm and also has access for guests with reduced mobility. There is a charge for using the Wifi in the hotel's communal areas.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

Guests staying at the Columbus can stay on a Bed & Breakfast or half-board basis. The dining room is very pleasant and tastefully decorated in a smart brasserie style, with pretty tables, a subdued ambience and a great many bottles of wine on display. The cuisine served here is a combination of Mediterranean and Italian influences, with a few special features, such as the four different types of risotto, as well as the various fish and meat dishes. Show-cooking demonstrations also take place at the Italian station, giving guests the opportunity to watch the chefs preparing the dishes. If you could do with a little privacy, there is a small 6-8-seater lounge area available by reservation only. The kitchens are open 24/7, with a selection of snacks available outside of the normal meal times (7:00am to 10:00am, 12:00pm to 3:00pm and 7:00pm to 11:00pm).

    To know

Since the hotel is linked to the Fairmont Monte-Carlo, guests staying here can also use the splendid recently opened spa at the Fairmont, located on the coast behind the Casino. A shuttle service is even provided to take you back and forth between the two.

The Fairmont is a huge establishment that was built facing the sea, affording breathtaking views across the waters of Monaco. The hotel is typical of the American-style 'resort' hotel, meaning that everything here has been designed so that guests don't actually need to leave the sometimes maze-like hotel for anything. That being said, the Golden Square is just two minutes away for those who do fancy venturing out.
