If you're after some Riviera-style glamour, the sea-facing Monte-Carlo Beach is definitely the place to be. With its back to a pine forest and its modern interior decorating, this highly intimate hotel is the stuff of dreams. Take note that there is a beach club on the same site as the hotel that offers its beautiful infrastructures, but also its concrete slab, to hotel guests and the general public alike.

    Location 8.64 /10

The Monte-Carlo Beach stands on the road leaving Monaco, in the commune of Roquebrune, a few miles from the Italian border on the French side. Located on the far end of Cap Martin, it is a haven of peace and tranquillity that also attracts a clientele looking to take advantage of the Monte-Carlo Beach Club facilities. For tennis enthusiasts, the Monte-Carlo Country Club is only a 10 minute walk away, and the closest nightclub, the Jimmy'z, is right next-door in the Monte-Carlo Bay hotel. Incidentally, the very old building behind the "Beach" hotel is available for rent and was used as a residence by Karl Lagerfeld, the famous clothes designer.

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

Focused as it is on the comfort and privacy of its guests, the hotel only has 40 rooms on offer. These come in different categories: Exclusive, Junior Suite, and Suite. However, they all share something in common: a view of the sea from a balcony with select second hand vintage furniture. As for the interior decorating, India Mahdavi added a modern touch without neglecting comfort and sensuality.
The room is spacious and luminous with a clever use of light tones. The bed is both large and comfortable and faces a huge flat screen TV, with all sorts of sockets to connect a DVD player, a computer, a games console... There is also a beautifully furnished sitting room. All of the bathrooms are marble-clad and equipped with a shower. They include brand name hospitality products, a hair dryer, a make-up mirror, etc. A particularly original feature is the porthole that has been fitted into the wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom. It provides a bit of natural light as well as the pleasure of catching a glimpse of the sea in the distance. There is 24/7 room service and two rooms have been especially designed to accommodate guests with reduced mobility.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The glamour of the principality is embodied in the Monte-Carlo Beach. Slightly secluded on the shore of a small bay and with its back to a pine forest, this legendary establishment of the roaring 20's has retained its beautiful architecture and its Riviera-Red tones. Opened in 1929, the hotel was given 5 stars and recognized by Relais & Châteaux in 2009, after having undergone a complete makeover by Lebanese designer and architect, India Mahdavi. The result is both elegant and classy. Guests enter into a small sitting room with modern furniture before arriving at a small and discrete reception desk. They must climb a couple of steps to arrive at the nicely decorated breakfast room. Access to the rooms is fast and easy, and the common areas are clean and simple. Outside, a terrace looks out over the sea. Once you have passed the small spa centre you will arrive at the Club section of the hotel, which is open to outside visitors and hotel guests alike. It includes an Olympic-size heated sea water swimming pool. The spiral design of the diving board is well worth the visit. The Deck restaurant looks out onto the swimming pool and once you leave the terrace you will arrive at the rest of the Club part. A series of tents stretches out and can be hired for the day. There is a lounge bar, a fitness centre, and guests may enjoy the activities on offer at the nautical centre at the end of the so-called beach, an unsightly strip of concrete that is meant to compensate for the lack of sand. There is free Wifi access throughout the hotel but guests have to pay extra for higher broadband. In the pine forest, quaint old bungalows can be rented out for the day to groups or individuals looking for some privacy or just some peace and quiet among the pine trees. Some even have a view of the sea. Another original feature is that electric bicycles are available for guests to use for free. Keep in mind that the hotel is only open from March till the end of October.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

Four possibilities are available to satisfy an empty stomach, and the small gastronomic restaurant 'Elsa' is the only one inside the hotel. It has a capacity of 40 people and serves lunch and dinner, offering a menu that is both trendy and gastronomic. The Deck is a poolside restaurant with a laidback atmosphere. Then there is the brasserie, with its long covered terrace facing the sea. Finally, gourmets may head to La Vigie to enjoy some grilled fish and seafood in green surroundings. It is a chic restaurant that is accessible by boat during the day, but is only open in July and August. If it's a quick snack you're after, head for the snack bar in the lounge area.

    Beach

The hotel does not have its own beach but it does have a strip of sand that isn't on the seashore. However, there is a pontoon that leads out to the sea from which you can dive into the crystal clear water. The area is monitored by lifeguards during the day. There is a nautical centre offering numerous activities for a fee.

    To know

In the 30's, the hotel was one of Josephine Baker's favourite haunts.

The Port Palace offers Monaco's own underground living experience, but its classy facilities and terrace overlooking Port Hercule cannot hide the fact that it has been hollowed out of the rock, and is consequently a bit gloomy. The view from the restaurant terrace is unbeatable and is highly popular with thrill-seekers during the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Miramar occupies an ideal position opposite Port Hercule and the rock holding up the Prince of Monaco's palace; it is also a 5 minute walk from the Golden Square and its Casino de Paris. It is a pity that some of the rooms look a bit worn and have been decorated in a hesitant manner, because it is otherwise a cute little boutique hotel boasting a panoramic terrace.

The Fairmont is a huge establishment that was built facing the sea, affording breathtaking views across the waters of Monaco. The hotel is typical of the American-style 'resort' hotel, meaning that everything here has been designed so that guests don't actually need to leave the sometimes maze-like hotel for anything. That being said, the Golden Square is just two minutes away for those who do fancy venturing out.
