The Port Palace offers Monaco's own underground living experience, but its classy facilities and terrace overlooking Port Hercule cannot hide the fact that it has been hollowed out of the rock, and is consequently a bit gloomy. The view from the restaurant terrace is unbeatable and is highly popular with thrill-seekers during the Monaco Grand Prix.

    Location 8.1 /10

The hotel's unique position affords it views over Port Hercule, the main harbour where floating palaces come to drop their anchors. To get an idea of exactly how luxurious these yachts are, you just need to cross the road. The Prince's Palace is just opposite, on the crest of the rock. A system of floating buses provides a practical shuttle service allowing you to get to the other side of the harbour without taking the round-about route. This means you will save a bit of energy necessary to reach the Oceanographic Museum overlooking the sea. Allow about 20 minutes to get to the top. The Golden Square with its Hotel de Paris, Casino, and Cafe de Paris is just a few minutes away on foot. The train station is also just a few steps away. The hotel could not be better located when it comes to Grand Prix weekend, as the circuit actually goes right around it, and the view from the terrace is spectacular.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

The hotel's 50 guest rooms are divided into several categories: Superior, Deluxe Junior Suite, Grand Corner, and Executive Corner. We focused on the Deluxe Junior Suites, which are very large, measuring approximately 50m². The decor is understated and uses mineral colours to elaborate on the uncluttered style seen in the lobby. The materials are luxurious, with quilted and padded leather panels by Hermès, a thick carpet, and a small illuminated alcove with a few vases... all of these designer furnishings make for a relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately, only a single little window allows natural light in from outside, and with the noisy road just underneath, you are better off keeping it closed and simply admiring the view from the armchairs. There is a very large flat screen television opposite the big bed. The spacious and marbled bathroom is a real treat, with a large circular mirror adorned with lights above the wash basin. The bathtub and shower cabinet are separate. The hotel has 2 guest rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Port Palace is what you might consider to be a boutique hotel. As such, it is an urban establishment with a limited number of accommodation units and a keen eye for modern interior design. It opened in 2003 and is the result of an astonishing feat of technical expertise that involved hollowing the entire hotel out of the rock. However, once inside, the place falls rather flat. The small lobby is disappointingly ordinary and soulless despite the best attempts at grandeur. The floral decor is sophisticated and excellent photos from the American agency Getty are exhibited twice annually on the walls. In addition to this, there are leather armchairs, light colours, and a bar at the end of the room. There is no doubting the style of the place, but somehow things just do not click.
It does start to improve upstairs once you get out of the lift, whose glass wall offers views of the mountain. The design of each level is based on a natural element: stone, the sea, the air, the sun, and seashells. It is certainly pompous, and the sophistication is a bit obscure, but the overall effect is very appealing. A sculpture welcomes visitors onto each floor and the low ceiling, dusky lighting, and muffled silence in the communal areas emphasise the cave-like location of the hotel. Two wine cellars are dug into the mountainside as well, which is very original, and a head sommelier guides you through the subtle flavours of various wines brought out for tasting. The lower ground floor houses a pleasant spa and a small gym, but there is no swimming pool. The top floor restaurant opens onto a terrace with unobstructed views of Port Hercule.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

Run by Michelin star chef Patrick Raingeard, the restaurant, Mandarine, along with the bar, is located on the 6th and final floor. It offers spectacular views of Port Hercule through its large picture windows. The orange-based decor is refined and the Mediterranean cuisine is prepared according to a list of undertakings intended to protect endangered fish species; for example, red tuna is not allowed on the menu. The restaurant can seat up to 140 diners and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

    To know

The hotel is hollowed out of the mountain and room has been made for 2 wine cellars where a sommelier organises tasting sessions.

Another variation on Monaco-style luxury, the Hermitage Hotel stands out for it's Belle Epoque-inspired elegance. White is the dominant colour, as seen in columns and the quiet lounges, but the hotel also boasts some retro-modern touches such as works by Gustave Eiffel and the breathtaking view from the bar and restaurant. The Fairmont is a huge establishment that was built facing the sea, affording breathtaking views across the waters of Monaco. The hotel is typical of the American-style 'resort' hotel, meaning that everything here has been designed so that guests don't actually need to leave the sometimes maze-like hotel for anything. That being said, the Golden Square is just two minutes away for those who do fancy venturing out.

The Miramar occupies an ideal position opposite Port Hercule and the rock holding up the Prince of Monaco's palace; it is also a 5 minute walk from the Golden Square and its Casino de Paris. It is a pity that some of the rooms look a bit worn and have been decorated in a hesitant manner, because it is otherwise a cute little boutique hotel boasting a panoramic terrace.
