Far from the crowd which characterises the Gargano coast in summer, guests at the Palace Hotel Vieste and the Relais dei Normanni are guaranteed a calm and relaxing stay just two steps from the castle of Monte Sant'Angelo. There is an elegant atmosphere to the place, which is ideal for holding parties and banquets, while a well-being centre, open to the public but free for guests at the two hotels, offers a whole range of treatments to pamper guests.

    Location 9.82 /10

The Palace Hotel San Michele is in Monte Sant'Angelo, some 9 mi from the sea, but nevertheless well-located to discover the nature surrounding Gargano as well as its religious side, with the Umbrian forest and San Giovanni Rotondo.

The Bari Palese airport is 90 mi away, or approximately 2 hours by car, while that of Foggia is only 40 mi away, meaning just over an hour by car.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

Although the style of the rooms in both of the residences is rather similar, there are still some details that set apart those of the Palace from those of the Relais.

The Palace Hotel San Michele offers 57 guest rooms, including 50 standards, 10 junior suites and 2 regular suites. Differentiating them from the rooms in the lower categories, the suites and the junior suites have in addition a panoramic balcony with a view over the bay. The first measure 32m▓ and 49m▓ and are equipped with a jacuzzi, while the second measure 23-24m▓ and have a bathtub. Affording two separate spaces, that is, a living room area and sofa-bed, the suites and the junior suites display a dimmer and more austere decor than the standard rooms. This being the case, the latter are more pleasant (according to us anyway), with their fitted sky-blue carpet, yellow-striped tapestry, red bedspread and chairs, and light-coloured wooden furniture. Despite not having a balcony and only measuring 18m▓, they offer the same amenities: air-conditioning, heating, a mini-bar, a safe, a telephone, and a range of quality hospitality products.

The Relais dei Normanni only has 29 guest rooms, made up of 5 suites and 24 standards. Each one of them has a large balcony and although they don't afford any panoramic views of the splendid bay, you will be able to admire the profile of the castle of Monte Sant'Angelo, one of the city's important historic buildings. Although the amenities and hospitality products are the same as those offered at the Palace, the facilities are a little more modern (in the bathrooms, for example, you will find very stylish square-shaped sinks and beautiful marble coating). The suites are equipped with a hydromassage shower and a small kitchen area. However, as is the case at the Palace, the decor in the rooms of this category is less inviting than in the standard rooms, where the light-coloured shades of wood serve to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The Palace San Michele is a hotel that oozes classic elegance, where a style of yesteryear rubs elbows with quality materials in a well-maintained building, dating back to as recently as 2001. Next to the main building, seen right after passing through the entrance gate and with a slightly Palladian fašade, there is a second building that was opened in 2008: the Relais dei Normanni Spa & Resort.

Although each of the 4-star hotels have their own reception and reserved spaces, they nevertheless boast a very similar style and share almost all of their facilities. While the entrance hall at the Relais gives you a glance into a smaller and more intimate establishment, the Palace Hotel San Michele immediately reveals itself as a place where things are done on a large scale, where you expect to see the guests grandly parading around as they once did in times past. Inside, dark wooden counters, pretty arches in light shades of pastel, soft dark green sofas, and cushions displaying the hotel's emblem: all of this contributes to creating an elegant and slightly grandiose atmosphere. Outside, this part is played by the small pathways and terraces, bordered by elegant balustrades from where you can admire the splendid view of the bay of Manfredonia. It isn't rare here, especially in summer and in spring, to see guests cheerfully rushing off to a banquet. Indeed, the Palace Hotel San Michele is the ideal place to hold a party, a celebration, or a dinner for the most varied of occasions.

At the far end of the garden, a small gate marks the boundary of the swimming pool area, which constitutes a round-shaped basin in the middle of a lawn and affording a panorama of the bay.
Opened in 2008 at the same time as the Relais dei Normanni (where it is found incidentally), the well-being centre is open not only to the guests of the two hotels, but also to the general public. From 10:00am to 12:00pm and 4:00pm to 7:00pm, guests can take advantage of various treatments, from the Finnish sauna to the Turkish bath, or even the hydromassage and vascular circuits, and to top it all off, there are the fantastic massages, the solarium and the beauty treatments. The gym is equipped with new and functional equipment.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The main restaurant of these two hotels is located in the basement of the Palace, in the "Salle Sant'Arcangelo". In addition to this, the establishment has two other dining rooms, although these are exclusively reserved for banquets. The lack of natural lighting in the "Salle Sant'Arcangelo" has been used to its advantage by creating a relaxing and slightly monastic atmosphere. A series of white columns, connected by Roman arches which seem to divide the room into several naves, create a space that looks somewhat church-like. Flowers on the tables and the window sills serve as decorations for the sober ambiance, where the light-coloured wooden tables blend in well with the blue of the chairs.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are enjoyed to the sound of either light classical or contemporary Italian music. You will have the choice between 3 starters and 3 main courses, with mainly regional and national specialities. The signature dish? The bean and chicory capriata, a speciality prepared with stale bread. The wine list is mostly comprised of wines from Apulia, but also has some choices from Campania and Sicily.

    Beach 7.20 /10

The hotel's private beach is the same one as the Hotel Baia del Monaco, with the same owners as the Palace and the Relais. Some 9 mi from the sea (downhill!), it is quite far, but there is a free shuttle service to get there.

    To know

The establishment, which is open all year round, has a mostly foreign clientele. Guests usually come in groups even in low season, while Italian tourists tend to mostly come in summer. We don't recommend this hotel if you are looking for a sun-filled holiday tanning by the sea (even though the hotel provides a shuttle to take you there, the beach is quite far), but rather if you are looking to experience Gargano far from the most popular villages along the coastline, all while being in a great location for going on theme-based excursions, such as religion or nature. It is possible to go on visits (which can be booked directly at the hotel) in the Umbrian forest (Foresta Umbra) and to San Giovanni Rotondo, where you will find the famous Padre Pio Basilica. Towards the sea, you can venture out on a discovery of the sea caves between Mattinata and Vieste.
