    Location 8.57 /10

Le Mas Candille is situated in Mougins, a charming village found on the hilltops behind Cannes and only a short drive from Grasse (the perfume capital of the world). Cannes is barely a 15 minute drive away, while Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is reached after 20-25 minutes. Further afield, Nice, Monaco and St Tropez are also within easy reach.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

With only 39 rooms and seven suites spread throughout three buildings, Le Mas Candille successfully maintains a cosy atmosphere. The majority of accommodation is found in Le Mas and La Bastide, but the best views are enjoyed from the suites in La Villa Candille (added in 2009).

The standard rooms in the converted farmhouse are individually decorated in an authentic French country style, employing Provencal colour schemes and lots of charm to detract from their small size. The rooms in La Bastide are all quite different but the majority remain faithful to the Provencal theme. Slightly more contemporary but still oozing with character, these deluxe category rooms are also much more spacious.

The suites in La Villa Candille are different again, with a brighter, more modern look. Flooded with lashings of natural light, they feature a bedroom with separate living area, generous walk-in closet and luxurious bathroom. Wonderfully comfortable (no ostentatious luxury here), they are tastefully decorated in cool, summery colours and a smattering of decorative objects. We loved the attention to detail; from the two huge flat screens (in the bedroom and living room), to the sections of exposed stone wall, or the rain shower and deep tub in the bathroom. Oh and there's also an enormous private terrace with sun loungers and dining setting for those lazy afternoons spent sipping chilled rosé...

    Overview 9.20 /10

Le Mas Candille began life in the 18th century as a modest farmhouse and over the years its grounds served as vineyards and were used to grow olives. Making the move to hotel in the 1960's, it has since evolved into an intimate, five-star affair of 46 rooms with two restaurants (one with a prestigious Michelin star), world-class spa, two outdoor pools and various other leisure facilities (Jacuzzi, gym...). Its lofty position means guests enjoy stunning views over the surrounding countryside and Pre-Alps from almost anywhere within the 10 acres of landscaped gardens.

And those gardens are something special; with over 2000 varieties of plants; the immaculate grounds are peppered with shady pines, fragrant lavender, olive trees and the majestic cypress trees for which the hotel was named after. Winding stone paths lead to various areas of the property such as the infinity pool or the alfresco Jacuzzi, where guests can soak up the spectacular views. Meanwhile, the hotel itself is divided into three living spaces: Le Mas, the original farmhouse structure where guests will also find Reception, Le Candille restaurant and neighbouring bar; La Bastide, slightly higher up on the hill and adjacent to the swimming pool and spa; and the suites of La Villa Candille, the latest addition to the hotel only a few steps from Le Mas.

Families will be happy to know that there is a separate kids' pool, kids' games area, ping pong table and even a pétanque area for those willing to try their hand at this very French, and very Provencal, sport.

Meanwhile, the Shiseido Spa, the first of its kind in Europe, features five treatment rooms, a spacious relaxation room, hydrotherapy pool and sauna. Tucked away in a Japanese style garden brimming with bamboo plants and Judas trees, the spa is a haven of tranquillity. With a range of body and face treatments created around the Qi method (exclusive to Shiseido), spa-goers reappear refreshed and rejuvenated.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

Foodies will fit right in at Le Mas Candille; Le Candille restaurant, the hotel's Michelin-starred centrepiece serves up divine culinary creations fit for a king. With head chef Serge Gouloumès at the helm, don't miss an opportunity to sample the house specialty: the Foie Gras 'Tatin' with Armagnac. The setting is elegant and intimate but low key, with the service you'd expect from a Michelin-starred establishment. The panoramic windows allow diners to admire the views, while the picture-perfect outdoor terrace is perfect for that pre-dinner aperitif. In the cooler months, retreat to the cosy Bar du Mas, complete with sumptuous furnishings and roaring log fire. Between May and September, a second restaurant known as La Pergola, is open for lunch (and dinner from June until August); serving a variety of Mediterranean dishes on the pool deck.

    To know

The hotel's name "Le Mas Candille" has its roots in Provencal culture: 'mas' is the name given to a Provencal farmhouse, while 'candille' translates as 'candle' in the Provencal dialect.
Parking and WIFI connection are provided free of charge to guests.
Unlike some other hotels in the region, Le Mas Candille is open all year round.
