Le Mas Candille began life in the 18th century as a modest farmhouse and over the years its grounds served as vineyards and were used to grow olives. Making the move to hotel in the 1960's, it has since evolved into an intimate, five-star affair of 46 rooms with two restaurants (one with a prestigious Michelin star), world-class spa, two outdoor pools and various other leisure facilities (Jacuzzi, gym...). Its lofty position means guests enjoy stunning views over the surrounding countryside and Pre-Alps from almost anywhere within the 10 acres of landscaped gardens.
And those gardens are something special; with over 2000 varieties of plants; the immaculate grounds are peppered with shady pines, fragrant lavender, olive trees and the majestic cypress trees for which the hotel was named after. Winding stone paths lead to various areas of the property such as the infinity pool or the alfresco Jacuzzi, where guests can soak up the spectacular views. Meanwhile, the hotel itself is divided into three living spaces: Le Mas, the original farmhouse structure where guests will also find Reception, Le Candille restaurant and neighbouring bar; La Bastide, slightly higher up on the hill and adjacent to the swimming pool and spa; and the suites of La Villa Candille, the latest addition to the hotel only a few steps from Le Mas.
Families will be happy to know that there is a separate kids' pool, kids' games area, ping pong table and even a pétanque area for those willing to try their hand at this very French, and very Provencal, sport.
Meanwhile, the Shiseido Spa, the first of its kind in Europe, features five treatment rooms, a spacious relaxation room, hydrotherapy pool and sauna. Tucked away in a Japanese style garden brimming with bamboo plants and Judas trees, the spa is a haven of tranquillity. With a range of body and face treatments created around the Qi method (exclusive to Shiseido), spa-goers reappear refreshed and rejuvenated.
