Although no longer owned by Ian Schrager, his and Starck's influences are still felt throughout the hotel, even after a renovation which was completed in April 2009. Very much in the same vein as the Hudson and to a lesser extent the other Morgans hotel group properties, the Paramount mixes good facilities, the best of design and great food, drink and partying and all in an enviable location in Midtown Manhattan. Not a great option for families given the relatively tight rooms, but couples and friends would appreciate the design element and the bar and restaurant. The hotel is set to become even more of a hotspot once its nightclub opens early next year (2011).

    Location 9.45 /10

The Paramount is situated on West 46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue, just moments from Times Square and the theatres. Within walking distance are: Bryant Park, the Rockefeller Center, MoMA, shopping on Fifth and Madison Avenues, Carnegie Hall and of course Central Park. Close by there are several metro stations which can take you south via the Flatiron District and Union Square or towards Penn Station and the Village. JFK is 18 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark 17.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

All rooms at the Paramount follow the same sober, yet attractive, white, grey and red colour scheme and their amenities remain pretty much consistent. The standard room is painted in off white whose dominance of the walls is only broken by the light grey headboard behind the bed. The bed is meticulously made with pure white sheets and features one red cushion, another grey one and a grey plaid at its foot. A rolling table is positioned at the side of the bed for breakfast in bed or for lazy working. The flatscreen television is mounted on a panel of printed roses which stretches from floor to ceiling and whose colour is reflected in a strip of carpet that follows on from the end of the panel and breaks the solid black carpet which is present throughout the rest of the room. The amenities include a clock radio, iPod docking station, iron and ironing board and bathrobe. The bathroom, which is quite poky and shares the room's colour scheme, has a bathtub, personalised toiletries and sinks which date back to when the hotel had a ship cabin theme. The hairdryer is hung over the door handle, which is the one rather classless characteristic of the room. The Double Double and Corner King rooms, although slightly bigger, are pretty similar while the hotel also has suites which offer living space and some great views of the city.

    Overview 8.95 /10

The Paramount is housed in a 1920s building with twelve arches at its base, one of which is the entrance. There's no mistaking who designed the lobby (whose entrance is watched over by the signature guardian angels also seen at the Hudson), which is dominated by the doughnut shaped chandelier hanging from the centre of the ceiling, while elsewhere on the ceiling are spotlights dotted around. Below, marked out by a square red carpet is the seating area which is diagonally cut into two by a couple of florally upholstered benches. Either side of these are a mish mash of seating styles including carved wooden armchairs, wingback chairs and couches with polished wooden frames. All this has as its backdrop a staircase which actually leads nowhere, but which is just intended to be a statement and which at night is lined with hurricane candles for atmosphere. This theatre of design is bordered by the different front of house services, each one having its own colour marble. Just off the lobby is a Dean and Deluca outlet. The fitness centre, which is open 24 hours per day, boasts top of the range machines (both cardio and weights) and free weights with a view out onto the street. The hotel's corridors, while spotless, are a little dull in grey although they do have a unique feature whereby the mirrors have the weather forecast for the following day scrawled on them (wrongly the day we happened to be there). Wifi is available for free throughout the hotel.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The hotel has both a bar and a restaurant in the form of Bar 46 and Library Bar on the mezzanine level respectively. The former is a sports bar which attracts both locals and tourists for post-theatre drinks and light meals with interactive gaming adding a competitive edge to proceedings. The Library Bar centres around a bar whose counter is white with letters of the alphabet scribbled all over it in black while above is a collection of painted books. Around the bar are clusters of seating, each one different from the next, and a white Bergmann piano in front of a window that looks onto 46th Avenue (the other side looks over the lobby). As well as a billiards table, there are flatscreen televisions dotted around the bar too, including one in a corner with a bookshelf from which you may help yourself. Breakfast is a continental affair while the small lunch menu features such dishes as nachos, lobster-chorizo mac and cheese, rigatoni Bolognese and mini apple ginger pie. Still under construction during our visit, the Diamond Horseshoe, an exclusive night time entertainment venue, will open early next year.

    To know

Since being bought and sold off again by Ian Schrager, the hotel has undergone three renovations, each one keeping, even after they was off the scene, his and Starck's vision for the hotel. There are still many elements from their era which have kept their place in the hotel as well as some new ideas which have been brought in. For example, expected to be unveiled in early 2011, the Diamond Horseshoe will be a high end restaurant, bar and club, something along the lines of mythical Studio 54.

Although it has a great central location and other pulls such as a rooftop bar and busy restaurant, the bits that most people are really interested in, the accommodation and service, fall short. Some of the rooms, are incredibly small and desperately needed updating (during our visit in February 2013), it seems as if the personnel have better things to do with their time and parts of the property are poorly maintained. There are no particularly good views to be had from the rooms and some are not very well appointed although the newly renovated guestrooms we saw were a huge improvement. The Amsterdam Court might be one of the cheaper hotels in New York but in our opinion there are better deals to be had elsewhere for couples and families looking for a central location.

You couldn't ask for a better location. Although this is a hotel which markets itself strongly as venue for conferences and events, it finds itself in the middle of the New York tourist area and has facilities that would suit any type of traveller, on business or pleasure. Add to that the little bit of magic that the Hudson Theatre brings to the table, together with the Art Deco surroundings, and you've got yourself the perfect base from which to discover the city that never sleeps. Decent sized rooms, some great views and the best of the city on your doorstep-definitely to be considered.

It is a fresh, modern and well-considered hotel with good size rooms and some great views. Recommended for lone female travellers or businesswomen as well as for couples looking for a comfortable, discreet yet functional base in New York.

There is a five foot installation on the hotel's fourth floor lobby of an imaginary species of antelope wearing huge red glasses and with his teeth showing through his lit up face. At once fun, great to look at, unique, welcoming and above all smile-inducing, this horned caricature is the embodiment of the Yotel. Marrying happy, contemporary design with function and innovation, the hotel is one of the most enjoyable places to stay in the city. It might be slightly off the regular tourist radar, but its other services and features more than make up for this: well appointed, practical rooms, a buzzing public space (both indoor and out), a trendy Japanese restaurant and some truly unique aspects that enhance the guest experience. Their spacecraft theme/jargon gets a bit tedious after a while, but this takes nothing away from the spectacle that is the Yotel, whether you are travelling as an individual, couple, group of friends or family.

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

      Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

This mythical New York hotel has seen its fair share of changes, both within in its walls and outside, however one thing remains constant: The Carlyle is one of the swankiest, smartest, seductive hotels in the city. The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
