A luxury version of The Laguna, the St Regis Resort offers an exhaustive list of services (a spa, direct access to the beach, renowned cuisine, etc., only sporty types might have something negative to say). Privacy was kept in mind when the lush gardens were being laid out, with plenty of thickets and discreet nooks. Unfortunately, there aren't many guest rooms that offer a view of the sea but we did really like the superb villas grouped around an impressive swimming pool in the shape of a saltwater river. The superb kid's club will delight families.

    Location 6.4 /10

On the west coast of the Bukit peninsula, the bit of land where a large number of the island's best establishments are grouped together, concentrated between Nusa-Dua and Benoa. The St Regis is 8 miles from the international airport and takes 20-40 minutes to reach, depending on traffic. From Denpasar it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to reach, and for Ubud, count on two to two and a half hours. The Bali Collection shopping centre, with its many shops, bars and restaurants, is 20 minutes away. You may also be interested to know that there is a private clinic in the hotel's proximity. It wasn't completed yet when we were visiting in 2012, but a new neighbouring golf course should be open soon.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

123 guest rooms are divided into suites, residences and villas. The suites are the most numerous (81 units) and no compromises were made in what they have to offer. In addition to being spacious (92m▓ to 190m▓), they are equipped with top of the line amenities (an iPod docking station, free Wi-Fi, a DVD player, a large flat-screen television, etc.), and the decor follows in line with the rest of the hotel, with silky fabrics, wooden embellishments (in addition to the parquet flooring) and quality materials (300 thread count sheets and goose down pillows and duvets). For your evening gowns and dress shirts, the walk-in closet is large enough to hold all of your outfits. The (marble-clad) bathrooms are equally impressive. With, among other features, a separate bathtub and (tropical) shower and a mounted television, it is hard to find any fault with them. All of the suites include a bedroom and a living room with large bay windows and access to a balcony (some of them have a patio instead). There is a view of either the gardens or the sea. In addition to the suites, the hotel proposes some luxurious accommodation options with its residences and villas, which offer more privacy and an entire host of extra services, including a butler at your disposal. The villas are superb, with the decor being traditional (Balinese) in style with a few modern and soft touches. Thought has been put into every detail (mahogany parquet flooring, decorations on the shelves, wooden louvre shutters), resulting in an overall feeling of comfort and familiarity. Spacious (371 to 604m▓), the facilities are comprehensive (with, in addition to the suites, a kitchen and a private access reserved for the butler). They each have an attractively manicured garden with a private pool and access to the beach or lagoon.

    Overview 9.20 /10

Opened in 2009, the resort's grounds cover an area of 22 acres spanning out to the sea. A 6-storey building holds some of the accommodations and the restaurants. The lobby sets the tone: the decor is something straight out of the glossy pages of an interior design magazine, with emphasis placed on silky fabrics (those covering the furniture, the rugs, etc.), the lighting effects, and the noble materials borrowing from the Balinese culture. The staff is attentive and numerous. One of the hotel's best assets is its 3,800m▓ lagoon. Both the layout of the saltwater pool and its surroundings are simply splendid, with the pool almost seeming to be a natural part of the landscape. Even the blue mosaic tiles at the bottom add a bit of charm to the illusion. It is hard not to envy those staying in the villas, which have direct access to this area. Set apart in very peaceful surroundings, the superb spa offers everything you could want (a consultant on holistic treatments, thalassotherapy, all types of massages, etc.), as well as a superb, well-equipped gym. Children have a very lovely club of their own called 'The Children's Learning Center' with its own garden. The attentive staff caters to all of your princes' and princesses' needs, and especially to your budding musicians, with musical instruments, such as a guitar, a keyboard and a drum set, all at their disposal. There is a water sports centre which offers kayaking, canoeing and snorkelling, etc.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

There is no lack of choices or quality here, making is undeniably one of the establishment's strongest points. There is an impressive buffet with international cuisine at the Boneka in the evening: seafood and products from the sea (fresh salmon, crab, lobster, etc.), Japanese dishes (katsudon sliced pork), sushi and maki, meats (butcher's choice cut), pasta and an Indonesian corner. For fans of the local cuisine, head to the Dulang, located in the garden. A lovely setting, an intimate atmosphere and softly playing music. Contemporary cuisine at the establishment's signature restaurant, Kayuputi, with gourmet cuisine on the menu. The wine menu is fantastic but be careful of the steep range of prices. A jazz concert is held every night at the King Cole Bar, in its cosy and sophisticated atmosphere. There is a beautiful terrace overlooking the site and with a view of the sea. The brunch here on Sundays is very popular.

    Beach 8.70 /10

One of the best things about the hotel is its direct access to the beach. Rows of deckchairs and parasols line the golden sand. Unfortunately, it can get a little windy here. From this side of the island, when the tide is low, you can forget about going swimming in the sea and head to the hotel's lagoon instead. It is possible to do some non-motorised water sports (kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing) for an extra charge.

The hotel's dimension is impressively large but its location is profiting by a nice land, in the heart of a large park planted with trees, which comes out on a grand beach. The infrastructures of the hotel are all completed and the rooms are comfortable.

One of the latest upscale establishments to open on the Bukit Peninsula, the Banyan Tree Ungasan prides itself on the high-quality amenities offered in its villas and the overall privacy guests enjoy here. Its location, perched on a cliff facing the sea, makes it the perfect holiday spot if you are looking for a luxury retreat away from any activity. Nevertheless, we did feel that the establishment lacks some warmth, in particular since the group of villas resembles more of a housing estate than a hotel and the pool areas are not exactly the most comfortable for relaxing in.
