The Pafian Sun Holiday Village is a lovely place for a holiday. Designed as a small Mediterranean village with soft-lined facades and terracotta roof tiles, it offers small but remarkably well equipped apartments, with all the necessary amenities and services. Children are welcome and everybody here is greeted in a most friendly way. We would not recommend it to sea-bathing aficionados however, who risk twisting an ankle on their way to the beach alone.

    Location 4.24 /10

This complex is great for being relatively isolated, while remaining only a short distance from some cultural landmarks and towns. The village of Kissonerga is 2 mi away, Paphos city centre is just 5 mi away, and Paphos airport 12 mi away. Larnaca airport is a 90 mi trip, making it approximately a 2 hour journey.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 223 apartments on offer for guests at the Pafian Sun Holiday Village. Some have a view of the sea, while others look out to the hinterland and mountains in the distance. The accommodation offer consists of 56 studios, 153 apartments (including 6 with 2 bedrooms), and 8 superior category apartments, supplied with bathrobes, a stereo system, a jacuzzi, and tea and coffee-making facilities. As it is though, the standard apartments are already very well equipped, with lots of natural light and light wood furnishings, which also goes for the parquet floor. The amenities include: satellite television, a radio, a direct international telephone line, individual air conditioning, a safe available for a fee, a mini refrigerator, a fully equipped kitchenette with tableware included, a hair dryer, and a balcony or a terrace, depending on which floor the apartment is located. Equipped with anti-slip mats, the bathrooms are immaculate, and although they aren't provided with any hospitality products, there is a shower-gel dispenser available. Room service is not available, but if you have a problem, a phone call to reception can sort everything out.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Built in 2000, the sturdy Mediterranean-style buildings were renovated in 2009 and look as if they have just received a fresh coat of paint. The lobby isn't very spacious but it exudes coolness and radiates beautiful natural light. It is actually more of a reception than a lobby, as life at the Pafian Sun Holiday Village revolves around the swimming pools and restaurants down below. The very large outdoor pool is adapted to swimming lengths, since children can paddle in the pool reserved exclusively for them. The only downside is that the deckchairs and parasols placed around it are too close together. The large lawn, down one level, is perfect for sunbathing in peace. The complex has its own fitness club with an indoor pool (heated in winter), a sauna, hammam, whirlpool bath, gym, and à la carte massages. Water aerobic sessions are organised everyday by the entertainment team.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The only restaurant, the Estia, serves all 3 meals of the day as a buffet. One à la carte dinner a week is included per guest and theme nights are organised (barbecue, Greek, Chinese and fresh fish). Hot and cold snacks are served all day long at the bars Aphrodite and Poseidon, not to mention a large variety of drinks and cocktails. There is one drawback here: free ice cream is served, but only to children under 16: how unfair is that!

    Beach 5.70 /10

Getting to it is quite an expedition! Not because of the distance, but because of the steep and rocky slope, where you risk a sprain if you are not careful enough. The coast is very rocky and no beach amenities are to be found on the spot, which is all the more regrettable since the sea is beautiful and calm. You will be better off by the side of the pool.

Here you have a modern hotel, but with a family clientele - an establishment where you can choose accommodations according to the size you require - (there are so many different types); the rooms of this seaside hotel do not all have a balcony. The Almyra hotel is unclassified; you should try it to get an idea of what that really means.

The Veronica offers everything you would expect of a 3 star hotel (local standards), and on paper sounds like a really nice place (moderate size, peaceful), but unfortunately in practice it hardly incites enthusiasm. Its location, which is neither right in the city centre nor on the seafront, gives it an unfortunate feeling of being neither here nor there. Its guest rooms are old fashioned, equipped with the bare minimum, and of questionable cleanliness, not to mention their facilities... It's really quite a pity, because if the entire hotel were to be done up, it would be a really pleasant place to stay.

The Alexander the Great Beach Hotel stands on the coast in Paphos and belongs to the Kanika hotel group, owner to several other hotels in Cyprus: Limassol and Ayia Napa in particular. It is 'reasonably' luxurious, blending together traditional Greek art and a more contemporary style, which caters for all age groups, especially since it was entirely renovated in 2010. Children are also welcome here, the hotel even having a leisure club available just for them.

Apart from its excellent location, close to the lively town centre of Paphos, the area's main cultural and archaeological sites, and a variety of shops, it has to be said that the Avlida has little appeal, despite the 4 star rating it so proudly displays at the entrance to its car park. The building itself is soulless, the guest rooms outdated, and some of the facilities have certainly seen better days. Realistically, the only redeeming feature is the pleasant welcome you'll receive.
