Don't let the name scare you (Capo d'Orso means 'Cape Bear')! This is a lovely establishment that has existed in the north of the Costa Smeralda for a long time. An upscale hotel with an intimate atmosphere on the waterfront, it is perfect for a romantic holiday or a spot of well-being in a superb setting.

    Location 8.0 /10

The hotel is located on Capo d'Orso, in the north of the Costa Smeralda, 2.5 miles east of Palau. It is part of Cala Capra, a private residential zone that also includes the residence 'Il Mirto' and a small pitch & putt 9-hole golf course.

    Accommodation 8.00 /10

There are six different room categories at the Capo d'Orso: standard, superior, deluxe and three types of suites. Every one of these has a choice of a sea view or not.

All of them are decorated in a very Sardinian style. The colours are mostly soft, with shades ranging from yellow to salmon and white to light brown. Those looking for a designer style should move on elsewhere, as here the traditional style rules. That doesn't mean the rooms are any less modern, though, thanks to their top of the line amenities: large-screen television, minibar, 24/7 room service, slippers, and bathrobes. The only thing missing in an Internet connection.

The standard rooms are themselves very comfortable, and in any case, it's the view of the sea that makes all the difference. The various suites are hard to rank. We did have a personal favourite, though, the so-called 'cardinal' suites. Their little garden that leads directly to the sea is really very lovely.

    Overview 8.40 /10

The Capo d'Orso hotel is located in the north of Sardinia. Located in a calm setting among some very beautiful wooded gardens, the hotel manages to give off an intimate atmosphere despite having 84 guest rooms and an excellent level of equipment. Under the pine, olive, and evergreen trees, the guest rooms, bars and restaurants, and swimming pools and the spa remain hidden from curious onlookers. You can make out the various shades of the turquoise sea through the trees. Opened in 1988, then expanded and entirely renovated in 2007, the Capo d'Orso has its musical rituals: a harpist as you enjoy your breakfast on the terrace under the olive trees, and a saxophone player or pianist at night.

    Food and drink 8.50 /10

The catering at the Capo d'Orso mixes choice with quality. The hotel has three restaurants. Breakfast is served on the terrace under the olive trees to the sound of harp music and a magnificent view of the sea at the 'Gli Olivastri'. It is also possible to enjoy dinner in this very chic atmosphere.
Not far from the beach, the 'Il Paguro' also offers a view of the sea. Specialised in seafood, it is open for lunch and dinner in a more informal ambiance. Finally, the pizzas at the 'Approdo' pizzeria are baked in a wood-burning oven.

    Beach 8.60 /10

The very calm beach at the Capo d'Orso is located below the hotel next to the marina, in the Cala Capra bay. Like all Italian beaches, it is a public one. The fact that it is part of a residential zone, though, makes it a rather private one. A very beautiful site.
A charming alternative, 250m north-east of the hotel, the Cala Selvaggia beach is even more difficult to reach for those not staying at the hotel. It is a very wild little cove. Plus, the hotel has installed sun decks along the hotel's seafront, on the rocks. Masks, flippers and snorkels can be borrowed for free.

    To know

The Capo d'Orso takes its name from the bear-shaped rock at the top of the hill.
