A pink house perched on a hill that is reached on foot? just a few hundred metres from the Haitian border in the very remote city of Pedernales, in the extreme south-west of the country. The D'Olio Mendes is an oasis of greenery with its adorable flower-filled patio with an excellent restaurant serving local cuisine. Although you will have a limited level of comfort here, including no hot water, a bit of adventure is sometimes good, especially since this friendly place is full of charm.

    Location 10.0 /10

The D'Olio Mendes is located in Pedernales, a charming fishing village found in the extreme south-west of the country on the border with Haiti, 74 miles from Barahona and 198 miles from the airport of Santo Domingo. A footbridge spans the river to Anse-à-Pitres, marking the border with Haiti. This small town with a Wild West feel is the ideal starting point for heading off to explore the region, and in particular the superb beach of Bahia de las Aguilas and the high mountains of the Sierra de Baoruco, which rise 2,350m.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

Don't expect any great luxury: there is no hot water or refrigerator, but at least it's authentic! Fitted with white tiling like the wall and decorated with a small Naive Art painting, the rooms are furnished with a double and a single bed, a mirror, a bench and satellite television. The small "luxuries" include central air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi Internet access. However, there is no safe. Some of the rooms have a large balcony furnished with two comfortable rocking chairs and a small round table with a view looking out onto the road and the mountains. The tiny bathroom is equipped with a tiny toilet, a tiny wash basin, a tiny bathtub with a fixed showerhead and a bar of soap. There is no hot water or hair-dryer.

    Overview 6.45 /10

It is difficult not to notice the very pink façade of D'Olio Mendes. This one-storey pink house has an adorable flower-filled patio, the perfect setting for enjoying the restaurant's local specialities. Pink is omnipresent in this establishment, which is also decorated with many plants and Naive Art paintings hung here and there. Built in 2003, this hotel has 25 guest rooms, 19 of which are spread out around the patio and 6 of which are located in a second building next to the road.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The restaurant-bar at the hotel D'Olio Mendes is one of the recommended places to go in Pedernales. Guests appreciate the setting, a flower-filled patio with a canna leaf roof, as much as the quality of the food, which consists of traditional local cuisine (octopus, shellfish, fried bananas, and the inevitable mangu, a banana purée fried with onions and cheese). Able to accommodate a hundred or so guests, this à la carte restaurant serves specialities from the Dominican Republic from 7:00am to 11:00pm.

    To know

If you have your laptop with you, the Wi-Fi is free. Keep in mind that there is no hot water here (although it isn't glacial either) but you get used to it quickly and might even find it refreshing, since the temperature often hovers around 30°C.
