The Holiday Inn of Penang dates back to 1979 and it shows. Of course, renovations have been done since the opening, but the location is still outdated, dark and noisy. You will find a lot of families there, the swimming pool is bursting with children !

    Location 9.35 /10

The Holiday Inn is located on the North Northeast of Penang, along the Batu Ferringhi beach. It is the most beautiful beach on the island, all things considered. The Bayan Lepas International Airport, located in the Southeast of the island, is located a little less than a forty minute drive away, at a distance of 22 miles. George Town, the capital, is 12.4 miles away, or a twenty minute trip.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The Holiday Inn is divided into two separate buildings by the road. It is made up of two towers: Ferringhi Tower and Beach Wing. The first one is thus opposite along the road, the second one opposite the beach. The façades look like any building. The hotel's lobby is rather disappointing: dark, dull and lacking style. The wooden counter at the reception area is not very warm. The hall leads directly to the hotel's restaurant, and you will also see the swimming pool. The rectangular pool does not reveal anything special. Several wooden deckchairs surround it. Other deckchairs, but this time in plastic, are set up on the lawn, along the beach.
When we were there, we were not able to visit the Ferringhi Tower since it was not open. Our guide told us that the tower has its own swimming pool.

    Overview 6.20 /10

358 rooms are distributed within the two towers and fall under 6 different categories: from standard rooms to family suites. The first one includes 160 rooms on 7 floors, the second one 198 rooms on 22 floors. The standard room is rather spacious but has no particular decoration. There is something more missing. You will find a television, air conditioning, a refrigerator with tea and coffee kit, a direct line for international calling and room service 24 h a day. However, there is no balcony, which is a shame. The granite bathroom is as simple as the room with a bathtub serving also as a shower, as well as welcome products.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The building has a main restaurant, the Terrace Cafe, in the Beach Wing but it is not big enough considering the number of tables and clients. It operates as a buffet for breakfast, set up in the middle of the room that opens to the outside. Lunch and dinner are served a la carte. The burgundy and green colours are rather sad. The few tables set up on the terrace are protected from the sun by sunshades. You can eat local, international and Indian cuisine there.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The beaches are all public in Malaysia and the Batu Ferringhi beach is no exception. That is why the Holiday Inn has not set up any deckchairs in the sand. This beach is considered the most beautiful one in the island. Even if it is pleasant, it is not a postcard landscape. The sand is of good quality, but unfortunately you find litters that blemish the landscape. You will also find a sign warning you of the presence of jellyfish in the water. It is the downside because the water is rather warm. The location is not very windy but rather lively due to the jet skis and other parakiting. A Balinese massage room is set up on the beach and offers traditional massages. The hotel does not have a nautical centre but you will easily find them on the beach, nearby.

    To know

The Batu Ferringhi night market is open every evening just at the exit of the Holiday Inn. Many shops and restaurants are also located nearby.
In October 2007, the hotel does not have a spa but will be opening one in 2008. To entertain the children, the "Dolphy" kids club offers activities for ages 4 to 12 all day long.
For sports enthusiasts, be aware that there is a golf course 22 miles away.

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang is located just next to the Shangri-La Golden Sands. But it is a lot less lively and much calmer than its neighbour. It has two swimming pools including one forbidden to children. So it can welcome couples as well as families.
