    Location 6.0 /10

The Paradise Sandy Bay is located on the Northeast coast of Penang, in Tanjung Bungah. The airport, located to the Southeast of the island, is a little less than a forty minute drive away. George Town, the capital, is 5 miles away, or a ten minute trip.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The Paradise Sandy Bay is a huge 25-story tower. As soon as you arrive in the lobby, you enter into a lively atmosphere. The reception area faces three elevators that go to the rooms. A large wooden counter welcomes the clients. A large stairwell built in the extension of the lobby goes to two restaurants, as well as the hotel's swimming pool. Its round shapes blend in perfectly with the setting surrounded by plant life. A little wooden bridge lines the area provided for children. Several plastic deckchairs face the pool, the others are set up on the lawn, facing the beach. The location lacks however a bit of harmony, sunshades with a well-known chilli brand name would be better off disappearing.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The building has 310 rooms with a balcony, each turned towards the sea. There are three categories of rooms: studio, suite and family suite. The last two categories have a large kitchenette. The basic room is spacious, with felted colours. The furniture is in mahogany coloured wood and the ground has comfortable carpeting. If you wish to use a safe, you have to go to the reception desk. On the other hand, you will find in the room an empty refrigerator (filled upon request) with tea and coffee kit, television, air conditioning, a direct line for international calling and room service 24h a day. The hair dryer is hung on the bathroom wall. The bathroom has either a shower or a bathtub. There are welcome products.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

Two restaurants belong to the hotel. The main restaurant, the Bistro Delifrance is open all day long. It operates as a buffet for breakfast and then serves a la carte meals for lunch and dinner. The decoration was done in French colours. The lamps are also in the shape of tricoloured flags. The pictures on the walls represent couples going for walks in Paris. The inside part is a bit suffocating but the restaurant has an outside terrace built facing the swimming pool, with the sea at mid-distance. The cuisine is local and international. The second restaurant, the Gaya's Beach Side Bar and Restaurant, is set up outside on the edge of the beach. Several tables along the beach afford couples a bit of privacy. It operates as a snackbar for lunch and you can have dinner with a good a la carte cuisine. To quench your thirst, go to the Taj By The Sea, the hotel's pub where you can discover the Bollywood music. You can also have a drink at the Planters Lounge, just next to the hotel's lobby.

    Beach

The beaches are all public in Malaysia and the Tanjung Bungah beach is no exception. That is why the Paradise Sandy Bay has not set up any deckchairs in the sand. The sand is of good quality, but unfortunately you find litters that blemish the landscape. You will also find a sign warning you of the presence of jellyfish in the water. It is the downside since the water is rather warm. The location is not very windy but rather lively due to the jet skis and other parakiting. The nautical centre is located to the right on the beach.

    To know

You will not find shops when leaving the hotel, however, two typical restaurants where you can taste different Asian dishes, are facing it.
In October 2007, the hotel still did not have a spa. It is however possible to get a massage next to the pool. The building entered into an agreement with a massage parlour nearby but it will open its own spa in 2008.

The Shangri-La Rasa Sayang is located just next to the Shangri-La Golden Sands. But it is a lot less lively and much calmer than its neighbour. It has two swimming pools including one forbidden to children. So it can welcome couples as well as families.

Open since 1948, the Lone Pine is a little structure similar to a boutique hotel. It was the first hotel built on Batu Ferringhi. This calm location is favourable for relaxing. On the other hand, the beach is rather noisy due to the jet skis that run all day long.

Opened in 1990, the Park Royal is a big hotel ideal for a family trip, given the size of the kids' club. All the common areas as well as the rooms are nicely decorated. Even if the building has a large capacity, the land is big enough to be able to maintain privacy.
