HL Rio Playa Blanca is like an extension of HL Club Playa Blanca in style. The resort is a basic resort with all the essentials and comfortable bungalows. The beach is a short drive away, so this resort is not ideal for holidaymakers looking for a beach holiday. An all-inclusive resort, the food is not the best quality, but it is handy for families on a budget. In the same vein, the HL group also has a third property, HL Paradise Island, also in Playa Blanca.

    Location 6.0 /10

The resort is located in Playa Blanca up from the main strip of bars and restaurants that line the beach. Playa Blanca is one of the island's main tourist spots, and although the area is fairly lively there isn't much in the way of sightseeing.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

There are 96 one or two bedroom bungalows, all built in typical Lanzarote style; single floor white walls and green or blue window and doors. Each bungalow also has its own terrace made a little more private by the gardens that wind around the accommodation area. They are spacious and clean. Although the décor is more functional than attractive, they are fairly pleasant and cosy. All are air-conditioned. Each bungalow has an open plan layout with a sparsely equipped kitchen. All bungalows have an old generation television in the living area. All bathrooms have a bath tub but there are no toiletries, so do bring your own.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The resort is set along a quiet main road in Playa Blanca. The small lobby has stairs leading down to the main cluster of activity around the pool. Here, you will find the pool bar, the restaurant, evening lounge, where some of the entertainment takes place, and entertainment stage next to the pool. The area around the pool is well-equipped with plenty of sun loungers, but can feel a little cramped when the hotel is full. Like this resort's sister resorts, its accommodation is set apart from the main pool area - it is separated by hedges of greenery, which helps break up the monotony of the white concrete structure. There is Wi-fi across the resort but it comes at an extra charge. There is an attractive kids' club, situated in a quaint wooden house. There is no spa or gym.

    Food and drink 6.95 /10

Most guests at the resort stay on an all-inclusive or half-board basis. The restaurant serves a buffet meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are several themed nights throughout the week; for a specific schedule it is best to ask the hotel directly upon arrival.

The H10 Timanfaya Hotel is an absolute gem located in Lanzarote. It has all the advantages of a 4 star hotel complex with none of its disadvantages. Reasonably sized, it boasts good facilities and the interior decorating has just been redone. Moreover, the welcome is warm and friendly. In short, this establishment has achieved a perfect balance between a traditional hotel and a holiday complex.

This 4 star Playa Blanca hotel is located approximately 300m from the beach and 700m from the village centre. It is one of the oldest of the H10 hotels on the island. Some of the rooms have been renovated, but, to be honest, some of the common areas seem to have remained untouched since the 70's - the setting is a bit old fashioned! However, the hotel is generally very pleasant and calm.

The Princesa Yaiza is one of Lanzarote's biggest and best quality hotels as far as resorts are concerned. So if this is your cup of tea, it doesn't get any better. You'll find this huge hotel sitting along the promenade of Playa Dorada, the main beach of Playa Blanca. With its eight restaurants, shopping boulevard, enormous spa centre and six pools, Princesa Yaiza really does have it all. It even has its own mini resort for kids next door, 'Kikoland' complete with its own sets of pools, theatre, restaurant and tons of different indoor and outdoor activities to keep children having fun throughout the holiday. This hotel is however not ideal for visitors looking for an intimate authentic Canary Island experience.

The largest of the three HL (Hoteles Lopez) hotels in Lanzarote, the HL Paradise Island is also the liveliest. Like the other two hotels under the same brand, this is a complex of apartments with either one or two bedrooms. Although the accommodation is spread out over the site, the resort does feel cramped fairly quickly. As its name suggests, the resort is set out around a pirate's ship docking close to the pool, which gives it a quirky aspect that differentiates it from other resorts on the island. Located a short drive away from the centre of Playa Blanca and its beach, the resort is not on the beach, but it is in a quieter area away from the hubbub of tourist restaurants and bars. The resort itself has a marine theme, meaning that it has life-size ship models around the pool and Formica rock mouldings to make the area a little more interesting. Although clean and functional, the resort needs an entire refurbishment.

The Iberostar Lanzarote Park is arranged in five rings along the coast in Playa Blanca, but far from a beach such as the Playa Dorada. The resort is ideal for families and elderly groups or couples as the layout is fairly compact. There is a good variety of facilities, including a well-equipped kids' club and sports facilities. This is not the place to stay for holidaymakers wishing to be on the beach as this part of Playa Blanca has a jagged and wild coastline, and therefore is not ideal for swimming in the sea, but the area is extremely pleasant and worth the compromise.

A quaint establishment with a typical Canary Island architecture of low-rise white-washed buildings with green window frames, the Sun Royal is a quiet resort that is ideal for families and groups.

The Gran Melía Volcan Hotel is an architectural experience for all of its guests. Designed by Andrés Piñero, it was designed as if it were a typical Lanzarote village, with romantic little courtyards, small squares and traditional spots. Inside the hotel grounds, you will find some of the island's symbolic sites, such as a reconstruction of the church of Teguise through which you will need to walk in order to get to the main hall. Once there, you will find yourself in the volcano's core: the reception hall. At first, the description of this hotel may put off guests seeking luxury and refinement, but the idea is actually perfectly adapted to the general decor of the hotel. In fact, the staff has to mention these details to the guests who may not notice them by themselves.

The Sandos Papagayo Arena is the largest hotels on the island with 488 rooms, situated between Playa Blanca and Papagayo. It is a labyrinth of concrete buildings and pools that can get extremely busy and animated in the high season (June-August). The large resort is right on the coast and is ideal for families looking for a holiday where absolutely everything is included without accommodation, peace and quiet or authenticity of the island being a priority. Most tourists here tend to spend their time basking in the sun after downing a couple of pints and a stack of pancakes at the second breakfast offered at the pool bar. The resort doesn't quite do justice to the island's focus on nature, which is a shame and the décor is nothing to write home about.
