VIK Coral Beach is an all-inclusive bungalow complex close to Playa Blanca although it is a fair way away from any hustle and bustle. Although there isn't much to do in the surroundings, the hotel lines the sea and has a peaceful ambience. The two bedroom bungalows are fairly bare in terms of interior decoration but there is a homely atmosphere inside. There is no spa or gym here. If you are planning on sightseeing most days then this hotel is a suitable option as there aren't too many activities on site to keep you busy.

    Location 6.75 /10

VIK Coral Beach is situated towards the Pechiguera Lighthouse or 'Pechiguera Faro' in Spanish, which is a short drive away from Playa Blanca. The area is a developing area and therefore there isn't anything happening in the surroundings. However, there is a free shuttle bus that takes guests to Playa Blanca twice a day.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

There are a total of 60 two-bedroom villas. The maximum occupancy of each villa is five people. Although the villas are bare inside, they feel strangely homely. There is an open plan living room and kitchen that is equipped with a microwave, kettle, fridge and cooking utensils in case guests feel like a change from the buffet on some nights. There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the second with twin beds. The floors are tiled throughout the bungalow. The villas are nice and bright and stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. There is no air-conditioning but fans are available at reception. The bathrooms all have bath tubs and pump shower gel, so bring your own toiletries. Each bungalow has its own terrace with table and chairs which gives out onto the main path so not ideal if you are looking for privacy. Each bungalow is lined by a small cactus garden which helps in breaking up the monotony of the architecture. The bungalow walls are fairly thick but they are not completely soundproof - do not be surprised to hear loud snoring coming from the neighbouring bungalow on some nights!

    Overview 7.20 /10

The VIK Coral Beach is situated out of the way in an area that is still being developed. The area is an unlikely area to set up a hotel, but the eerie stillness does have its charm, especially as you watch the sunset from your bungalow terrace. The hotel has its own car park out front. You will notice that the hotel is fitted with a ramp for people in wheelchairs. Inside the main building, the reception is to the right and there is a small living area with two computers to the left. Straight ahead is the pool area and restaurant. The pool is a rectangle of blue water surrounded by an array of deck chairs. There is also a kids' pool. Music is played around the pool all day long and in the evenings there in entertainment at the stage close to the restaurant. Away from the hubbub of the main cluster of activity, you will find several rows of bungalows stretching down towards the water (which is sealed off by a fence for security reasons). There are also tennis courts. To get around, guests can hire bikes directly from the hotel (14 euros/24hours), which is a handy way of seeing the area. For long-term guests, there is also a self-service launderette available. The bungalows, all identical, have been painted in the traditional Lanzarote style - white walls with blue door and window frames.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

There is one restaurant and all guests here have an all-inclusive formula. The restaurant serves a buffet at all three meals. The food isn't bad although the selection resembles that of the other resorts - it is mainly a mix of international dishes. The restaurant itself is fairly light as it has floor to ceiling windows and has a view onto the pool. The staff here is extremely helpful and friendly.

    To know

VIK Coral Beach is part of the VIK hotel group. In Lanzarote there are two other hotels of the same group: VIK San Antonio in Puerto del Carmen which is more of a resort (see our review of this hotel) and Villa VIK close to the capital (see our review of this hotel). The chain also has hotels on other Canary Islands as well as in the Dominican Republic.

VIK Coral Beach opened in May 2010 and was completely renovated meaning that the furniture and decoration is all brand new. The staff that works here today have all participated in some way to the final touches of the hotel which gives them a sense of ownership which is reflected in the good service.

The pleasant three-star Sun Royal resort is situated in Playa Blanca, one of the island's most lively tourist spots. Part of the Spanish-owned Orly Hotels Group, the resort is an apartment complex, like its sister hotels, Sun Island and Sun Tropical, but it is separate to the latter two resorts. A quaint establishment with a typical Canary Island architecture of low-rise white-washed buildings with green window frames, the Sun Royal is a quiet resort that is ideal for families and groups.

The Hipotel Natura Palace is situated in Playa Blanca, the second busiest tourist spot on the island. The hotel is large and very far from authorised architecture on the island. With its huge glass front, the hotel is hard to miss, despite being a little on the outskirts of town. Despite the hotel's large imposing structure, the exterior spaces make it a very peaceful place to stay. It is an ideal hotel for people looking for peace and quiet with all the usual facilities whilst being within walking distance of an animated part of the island.

The H10 Timanfaya Hotel is an absolute gem located in Lanzarote. It has all the advantages of a 4 star hotel complex with none of its disadvantages. Reasonably sized, it boasts good facilities and the interior decorating has just been redone. Moreover, the welcome is warm and friendly. In short, this establishment has achieved a perfect balance between a traditional hotel and a holiday complex.

The largest of the three HL (Hoteles Lopez) hotels in Lanzarote, the HL Paradise Island is also the liveliest. Like the other two hotels under the same brand, this is a complex of apartments with either one or two bedrooms. Although the accommodation is spread out over the site, the resort does feel cramped fairly quickly. As its name suggests, the resort is set out around a pirate's ship docking close to the pool, which gives it a quirky aspect that differentiates it from other resorts on the island. Located a short drive away from the centre of Playa Blanca and its beach, the resort is not on the beach, but it is in a quieter area away from the hubbub of tourist restaurants and bars. The resort itself has a marine theme, meaning that it has life-size ship models around the pool and Formica rock mouldings to make the area a little more interesting. Although clean and functional, the resort needs an entire refurbishment.

HL Rio Playa Blanca is like an extension of HL Club Playa Blanca in style. The resort is a basic resort with all the essentials and comfortable bungalows. The beach is a short drive away, so this resort is not ideal for holidaymakers looking for a beach holiday. An all-inclusive resort, the food is not the best quality, but it is handy for families on a budget. In the same vein, the HL group also has a third property, HL Paradise Island, also in Playa Blanca.

The Iberostar Lanzarote Park is arranged in five rings along the coast in Playa Blanca, but far from a beach such as the Playa Dorada. The resort is ideal for families and elderly groups or couples as the layout is fairly compact. There is a good variety of facilities, including a well-equipped kids' club and sports facilities. This is not the place to stay for holidaymakers wishing to be on the beach as this part of Playa Blanca has a jagged and wild coastline, and therefore is not ideal for swimming in the sea, but the area is extremely pleasant and worth the compromise.

This 4 star Playa Blanca hotel is located approximately 300m from the beach and 700m from the village centre. It is one of the oldest of the H10 hotels on the island. Some of the rooms have been renovated, but, to be honest, some of the common areas seem to have remained untouched since the 70's - the setting is a bit old fashioned! However, the hotel is generally very pleasant and calm.

The Gran Melía Volcan Hotel is an architectural experience for all of its guests. Designed by Andrés Piñero, it was designed as if it were a typical Lanzarote village, with romantic little courtyards, small squares and traditional spots. Inside the hotel grounds, you will find some of the island's symbolic sites, such as a reconstruction of the church of Teguise through which you will need to walk in order to get to the main hall. Once there, you will find yourself in the volcano's core: the reception hall. At first, the description of this hotel may put off guests seeking luxury and refinement, but the idea is actually perfectly adapted to the general decor of the hotel. In fact, the staff has to mention these details to the guests who may not notice them by themselves.

The Princesa Yaiza is one of Lanzarote's biggest and best quality hotels as far as resorts are concerned. So if this is your cup of tea, it doesn't get any better. You'll find this huge hotel sitting along the promenade of Playa Dorada, the main beach of Playa Blanca. With its eight restaurants, shopping boulevard, enormous spa centre and six pools, Princesa Yaiza really does have it all. It even has its own mini resort for kids next door, 'Kikoland' complete with its own sets of pools, theatre, restaurant and tons of different indoor and outdoor activities to keep children having fun throughout the holiday. This hotel is however not ideal for visitors looking for an intimate authentic Canary Island experience.
