The Cleopatra has a lot going for it. It has good spacious rooms, its food is very good, the beach is just outside and it has access to one of the finest kids clubs around (at its sister hotel the Mediterranean Palace next door). It can be quite confusing to find your way around the three buildings which make up the hotel, however once you get the hang of it you'll realise that you made a good choice. Recommended highly for both couples and families.

    Location 6.5 /10

Cleopatra has an excellent spot on the sea front, just in front of a small beach, Playa del Camisón, and with the main shopping street in Playa de las Americas to the other side. Access to the hotel is easy and if you can't find a space in the small car park at the front of the hotel then you will probably come across one on the main road. Tenerife's southern airport is 12 miles away on the motorway while the northern one is 50 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The Cleopatra offers three distinct types of room along the three different colour schemes of the buildings. The first of these, the standard, is of a generous size and features bas reliefs of the Egyptian queen after whom the hotel is named. The room features a large double bed, nicely finished furniture including a desk, butler, bedside tables and drawer unit, a regular television set, fridge (2.85? per day), safe (same price) and a table and chairs. On the bed you'll find your complimentary beach towels and in the bathroom, whose marble is different from most in the area, are bathrobe and slippers, Molton Brown toiletries and a double vanity. The balcony is also of a good size and has either a pool or sea view. The only difference in the superior room, apart from its greater surface area, is the large balcony with small pool and sun beds, which can be seen through the bathroom's window. The suite is a good option if you require a little more space in which to relax, although the room itself is the same size as the standard room and the lounge areas are a little dated and in need of refurbishment. One advantage is that the room has two balconies.

    Overview 7.95 /10

You will get an idea of just how much space there is at the Cleopatra as soon as you walk into the lobby. Although this later is fairly small for a hotel of this size, to its right are the galleries of floors in the middle of which hangs an enormous chandelier from the roof right down to the reception level. All three of the buildings that make up the hotel are similar with heaps of space, possibly too much, on the first and ground floors, which is taken up with seating areas, bars, fountains and a high number of mirrors and mirrored columns (which we found quite unsettling). All this space and detail however do give a very grand impression, which some may favour over some of the other claustrophobic hotels (just try not to get lost between the three buildings!). The pool area, which is the focus of the hotel, similarly has bounds of space which means that the numerous sun beds are able to be placed at generous intervals allowing a comfortable sunbathing experience. The pool itself resembles more a Roman bath than anything Egyptian, although it is certainly one of the most original settings for a pool. At one end of the area is Les Pyramides, a conference centre and venue for one of the biggest shows on the island, a Flamenco extravaganza. There is also a small kids pool in the vicinity. The English-speaking animation team is on hand all day to entertain all guests with activities such as water polo, spinning and even belly dancing! As for the kids they will not have a better place to spend their days over at the Mediterranean Palace hotel in their brand spanking new 800m² kids club which is probably the finest on the island. For details of this, as well as the fitness centre and sports facilities, see the Mediterranean Palace hotel profile. At night the entertainment usually takes the form of singers doing cover versions of well known numbers or dance performances outside in the open air stage which has a dance floor in front of it (which the youngest kids just can't resist!). The major evening attraction however is the 'Alma' show, a flamenco spectacular which takes place in 'Les Pyramides' just next to the hotel. The tickets are fairly pricey, but they are only proportional to the talent of the show's performers. There is wifi available (chargeable) throughout the hotel, as well as coin-operated PCs on one of the hotel's lounge areas.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The hotel has just one buffet restaurant which is located just below the reception floor. It has a large capacity with seating both inside the room proper and on an interior terrace. The room is a little more pleasing to the eye than many in Tenerife, with good all round presentation and paintings of Venice on the walls. The food itself is very tasty, with a large selection of starters and mains (less true for the desserts) which are always topped up and kept warm throughout the evening. The staff however we found to be not particularly personable although they did do their job efficiently. One advantage of taking dinner here is that with many guests staying on a bed and breakfast basis, it doesn't get very crowded. The hotel has three bars in total, although they are not all open at once. There is a small lobby bar which opens in the evening when the pianist is around, a snack bar by the pool where guests can choose to eat on the terrace or inside and the best of the lot, the Beach Club on Playa del Camisón. This bar, a few hundred metres' walk from the hotel, has a great location overlooking the beach and serves food and drink every day, with themed parties put on from time to time.

    Beach 7.20 /10

To get to the Playa del Camison, dark sand public beach facing the hotel, open the door using the room's magnetic key and cross the walkway. Supervised and well-equipped, this beach is medium sized and bordered by palm trees. Equipment (extra cost) include beach umbrellas, deck chairs and showers. Water sports and games for children are readily available. Some dykes break the waves, offering quite a calm sea to swim in. We advise you to go to the right side of the beach, towards the yatch club, because there are less rocks. Cleopatra's guests have access to the Beach Club, the bar restaurant of the Anthony Hotel which is part of the Mare Nostrum Resort.

    To know

The hotel is part of the Mare Nostrum complex which includes the Mediterranean Palace hotel and the Sir Anthony. The Cleopatra is actually made up of what used to be three different hotels and so comprises three separate blocks, each of which is identical, aside from the colour scheme of the rooms (red, blue and green). Guests at the Cleopatra have access to the fitness centre and kids club at the Mediterranean Palace as these facilities are not available at the former.

If you're searching for a mid-range hotel with a complete range of facilities for all the family, look no further than the Gala. Ok, it's not right on top of the beach, but aside from that you can't take anything away from this hotel: spacious, comfortable rooms, good sport and wellness facilities, a great infrastructure for kids, decent food and all this right in the centre of the tourist zone of Playa de las Americas. What's more it has something that no hotel can build or buy - a fun, lively atmosphere. We would recommend this for couples, groups of friends and families who want a good value all-round hotel experience.

The Mediterranean Palace is the perfect family hotel. Not only is there a great atmosphere about the place but it is hot on entertainment with a great animation team and a fantastic new kids club. The rest of the hotel's infrastructure isn't bad either with decent rooms, a very good restaurant and an excellent location in the heart of the resort, close to the beach. Yes, the complex can seem intimidatingly large, but overall it is definitely one to consider if you have a several kids who need entertaining.

This is one of the more classy acts in Tenerife. A hotel primarily for adults, it is intimate, smart and relaxing while close to the beach and town centre. It has stylish, well equipped rooms (all of which face the sea), an excellent restaurant and a magnificent new wellness centre to boot. The staff too is first class and will do everything to make your stay a memorable one. We highly recommend this property to those looking for something a bit special and who want to get away from the noisy, impersonal characteristics of the large hotels.

This aparthotel complex is perfect for those looking for a family-friendly British ambience, particularly as the main language used at reception, as well as for the entertainment programme and the hotel's services in general, is English. Indeed, although the management team is trying to bring a little more balance to its customer base, for the time being it still attracts a primarily English clientele. The facilities here are of a high quality and the hotel offers very good value for money, particularly if you don't mind the primarily British clientele.

Villa Togaro is a little holiday complex located on the slopes of Playa de las Americas. It consists of small bungalows with guest apartments measuring around 50m². The complex is not too big, and the gardens and external infrastructures are well maintained. A welcoming place, it offers a good range of services. On the downside, some of the rooms look over the car park of a shopping centre.

While this is certainly not the best hotel in Tenerife, it is a good mid-range family hotel with a nice atmosphere reigning over the complex. It has decent rooms, the capacity to keep the kids entertained, above average quality food and pleasant public spaces, especially round the pools. This, together with its friendly staff, makes it a no-brainer for a relaxed family holiday without breaking the bank.

The Jardines del Teide is unique among the hotels of Tenerife for several reasons. The thoughtfulness it shows towards its guests is something we didn't see elsewhere, the atmosphere that reins over the property is very special indeed and facilities themselves (rooms, restaurant, miniclub) are top-notch. OK, it isn't right on the beach, but it is high up meaning great views of the surroundings, which together with the above, make it one of our favourite hotel's on the island.
