If you're searching for a mid-range hotel with a complete range of facilities for all the family, look no further than the Gala. Ok, it's not right on top of the beach, but aside from that you can't take anything away from this hotel: spacious, comfortable rooms, good sport and wellness facilities, a great infrastructure for kids, decent food and all this right in the centre of the tourist zone of Playa de las Americas. What's more it has something that no hotel can build or buy - a fun, lively atmosphere. We would recommend this for couples, groups of friends and families who want a good value all-round hotel experience.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Gala has an ideal position right next to all the bars, restaurants, clubs and shops in Playa de la Americas in the south of the island. Although not one of the front line hotels, it is a mere five-minute walk from the closest beach Playa de la Americas (Playa de Troya is just at the end of the road too). For those arriving by car, you'll be able to find a free parking spot somewhere along the road in which the hotel is situated or at worst a road close by. The island's southern airport is 12 miles away by road and the northern one is 50 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The Gala offer three categories of room, although the décor remains pretty consistent. The standard room has a generous surface area and is quite smart despite its modesty. The furniture is pretty standard, solid dark wooden desk, butler and bedside tables worked into the bed's headboard, while there is also a red sofa and false parquet floor. Amenities in the room consist of a flatscreen television, a safe and fridge (the last two of which are chargeable). The balconies, which look either on to the sea or the interior of the island, are comparatively large and have plastic garden furniture. The bathrooms, which include a bidet, hairdryer and a few toiletries, are spacious and well looked-after. Just a note on intimacy - the bathroom door is made of glass, so if you are a group of friends this could pose a problem. If you want that little bit of extra comfort then opt for the Club Alexandre rooms, which, although identical to the standards, have extra amenities such as more numerous toiletries, bathrobe, slippers and a complimentary bottle of wine, while you are also guaranteed a sea view. There are family rooms, however these have no view and are furnished in a similar way to the other rooms, with a window between the two bedrooms so parents can check on the kids.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Not the most aesthetically pleasing hotel from the outside, with its cubist architecture, the interior is a little better. The lobby is of a fair size and has a gallery looking down to the floor below with its fountain surrounded by trees, creepers hanging down from the high glass roof. Outside at the pool area, which didn't seem to have any parasols worryingly, you'll find two large heated (in winter) pools with a reasonable amount of space around them for sunbathing. Just above, to the far end is a solarium with views all around of the sea and the volcano while next to this to the left is the brand new chill out area. This latter features a couple of wooden structures covered in fabric under which are stylish cushioned sofas allowing guests to look out to sea as they sip on their drink. The kids too have their own space with a fun kids pool complete with slide and fountain as well as the Magic Park kids club, which was completed in summer 2010. This bright, fun and modern space boasts a large flatscreen TV, nicely done murals and a host of games and painting gear to entertain 4-12 year olds. The two English-speaking animators who look after the kids during the day also put on activities for the not so young, including games in and around the pool and sports tournaments for those of a competitive nature. At night there is a professional show which takes place inside on the modest stage. We saw three energetic girls perform a series of fast-paced, light-hearted dance routines which, while not as impressive as some other shows, certainly pleased the crowd. As well as dance shows the hotel also has musicians and singers come in several nights per week. A big plus at the Gala is the spa and fitness centre, accessed by a lift next to the pool area. One of the nicer wellness facilities we saw, it has a good range of massages, facial and body treatments and hydro-massage therapies in its several specialist pools as well as a decently-equipped fitness centre (although there is no water or fruit on hand). Entrance to the wellness centre is 15? and includes use of the pools, sauna, Turkish bath and showers, while the gym is free. Other amenities available at the Gala include a shop with souvenirs and supplies, complimentary wifi in the lobby, coin-operated PCs and a games room with arcade games, a flatscreen television, books and games consoles. Baby sitting is available on request.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

There is just one buffet restaurant at the Gala, situated on the basement level of the hotel, meaning unfortunately that there are no views to be had. When we arrived we found it difficult to find a laid table, despite there being not many guests in the dining room. Aside from this inconvenience, the experience was pretty good. The service was efficient and pleasant and the food, of which there was a good choice, was of a high standard. If you are staying for two weeks you should be aware that the food changes on a nine-day cycle so you risk the menu repeating itself for a while at the end of your stay. There are two bars to choose from, the first just next to the stage outside the restaurant whose punters usually take their drinks and sit outside on the terrace or at the chill out area in the evening. Presided over by a perky gentleman who should be an extra in Italian-American gangster films, this bar opens only in the evening. Otherwise there is the snack bar at the pool, which also from time to time the venue for barbeques, which serves appetizers and drinks during the pool opening hours.

    To know

The hotel, which was completely renovated in 2008, has five rooms adapted for handicapped guests. They also have family rooms but these have no view, so it may better to book to standard rooms, each with their own balcony looking on to the pool or out to sea.

The Cleopatra has a lot going for it. It has good spacious rooms, its food is very good, the beach is just outside and it has access to one of the finest kids clubs around (at its sister hotel the Mediterranean Palace next door). It can be quite confusing to find your way around the three buildings which make up the hotel, however once you get the hang of it you'll realise that you made a good choice. Recommended highly for both couples and families.

The Mediterranean Palace is the perfect family hotel. Not only is there a great atmosphere about the place but it is hot on entertainment with a great animation team and a fantastic new kids club. The rest of the hotel's infrastructure isn't bad either with decent rooms, a very good restaurant and an excellent location in the heart of the resort, close to the beach. Yes, the complex can seem intimidatingly large, but overall it is definitely one to consider if you have a several kids who need entertaining.

A family hotel in the heart of one of the south's resorts, La Siesta is a run-of-the-mill hotel with decent but not exceptional facilities which represents a relatively good value place to stay for an all inclusive break. Slightly dated, it has large, comfortable rooms, a full programme for kids and even a wellness centre. However if you are looking for high quality service and a top notch infrastructure you may want to look elsewhere.

This aparthotel complex is perfect for those looking for a family-friendly British ambience, particularly as the main language used at reception, as well as for the entertainment programme and the hotel's services in general, is English. Indeed, although the management team is trying to bring a little more balance to its customer base, for the time being it still attracts a primarily English clientele. The facilities here are of a high quality and the hotel offers very good value for money, particularly if you don't mind the primarily British clientele.

Villa Togaro is a little holiday complex located on the slopes of Playa de las Americas. It consists of small bungalows with guest apartments measuring around 50m². The complex is not too big, and the gardens and external infrastructures are well maintained. A welcoming place, it offers a good range of services. On the downside, some of the rooms look over the car park of a shopping centre.

While this is certainly not the best hotel in Tenerife, it is a good mid-range family hotel with a nice atmosphere reigning over the complex. It has decent rooms, the capacity to keep the kids entertained, above average quality food and pleasant public spaces, especially round the pools. This, together with its friendly staff, makes it a no-brainer for a relaxed family holiday without breaking the bank.

This is one of the more classy acts in Tenerife. A hotel primarily for adults, it is intimate, smart and relaxing while close to the beach and town centre. It has stylish, well equipped rooms (all of which face the sea), an excellent restaurant and a magnificent new wellness centre to boot. The staff too is first class and will do everything to make your stay a memorable one. We highly recommend this property to those looking for something a bit special and who want to get away from the noisy, impersonal characteristics of the large hotels.

The Jardines del Teide is unique among the hotels of Tenerife for several reasons. The thoughtfulness it shows towards its guests is something we didn't see elsewhere, the atmosphere that reins over the property is very special indeed and facilities themselves (rooms, restaurant, miniclub) are top-notch. OK, it isn't right on the beach, but it is high up meaning great views of the surroundings, which together with the above, make it one of our favourite hotel's on the island.
