The Jardines del Teide is unique among the hotels of Tenerife for several reasons. The thoughtfulness it shows towards its guests is something we didn't see elsewhere, the atmosphere that reins over the property is very special indeed and facilities themselves (rooms, restaurant, miniclub) are top-notch. OK, it isn't right on the beach, but it is high up meaning great views of the surroundings, which together with the above, make it one of our favourite hotel's on the island.

    Location 6.5 /10

The Meliá Jardines del Teide is located up on a hill in the southern resort of Playa de las Americas. The immediate vicinity of the hotel is fairly calm as it is surrounded by only a few other hotels, while the main town centre is some 15-20 minutes' walk away. The closest beach is the Playa del Duque, again, a short stroll away, however there is a free shuttle bus between there and the hotel. The hotel does have a covered car park (chargeable) which operates on a first come first served basis. If it is full upon your arrival then don't fret as you'll find a space in the surrounding roads without too much of a problem. The islands southern airport is 18 miles away while 52 miles separates the hotel from the northern airport.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are two room types on offer at the Jardines del Teide: standard and junior suite. The basic room is one of the largest we saw on the island, and what's more it's extremely well appointed. The floor is nicely tiled with terracotta-coloured squares while the furniture, which comprises headboard, bedside table, desk, sofa bed and coffee table all compliment this shade and each other. An effort has been made on the decoration side with a painting and a large piece of printed fabric hanging above the bed, as well as a flower posed on the bed upon arrival. Amenities include a regular television, safe (10? deposit and 2? per day thereafter) and fridge (free). The balcony, which is of a decent size and private, looks out over the interior of the hotel or the sea. The bathroom, in white marble and blue and white tiling, is spacious and boasts a double vanity, a good selection of toiletries, bathtub with regular shower, separate loo and bidet and the nice touch of a flower between the two sinks. The junior suite is actually the same size as the standard room but has a completely different set up with and extras such as bathrobe, slippers, Etro toiletries and a larger balcony.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The entrance to the Jardines del Teide is a unique one as it is open air?well almost. The lobby's roof is not attached to its walls, meaning the space is both bright and cool in temperature. The reception desk, manned by polite, friendly personnel, is situated to the right, while the rest of the room is filled with fountains, plants and modern art pieces on the walls. There is a fantastic view of the coast straight ahead as you walk in to the sound of chill out music but perhaps the most original of all the features are the parrots in cages just outside on the perfectly positioned terrace. Outside are two main swimming pools as well as one for children. It is here you can fully appreciate the architecture and landscaping of the hotel with the attractive stone work and terraced outdoor spaces of the hotel acting as a backdrop to the multiple trees and plants. One of the pools is heated during winter, although both offer a great setting in which to take advantage of the sun's rays. The smaller of the two (that which is heated) is possibly slightly less exposed, however both are calm, clean and relaxed and offer plenty of space for guests. In addition, there are two solariums set aside for adults only just by the pools.

Just next to the main pool is the miniclub which is will keep the little ones occupied throughout the day and which is lucky enough to have some excellent animators. These very same put on a daily schedule of entertainment for grownups too, but care is taken so as not to disturb those who do not wish to partake in such activities. In fact, this is very much an example of how the different groups at the hotel live in harmony and everyone gets on with their personal holiday habits smoothly and without hindrance. This is not something the hotel has forced but more a situation engendered by the nature of the hotel complex itself. The evening's entertainment takes place indoors within a professional setting and includes acts brought in from outside such as singing and traditional dance. The hotel has a small, basic fitness room with a few machines, including the Power Plate, and is expecting more to be added soon. There is no wellness centre, but massages are available at extra cost and there is a hairdresser in site too. Other services at the Jardines del Teide include all sorts of activities such as pool, ping pong and squash, an internet corner with coin-operated PCs, an arcade room and a professional photography studio.

The grounds and public spaces of the hotel are lovely to wander round and are in impeccable condition. Getting to the room is easy and quick and the open corridors make a nice change to some of the dingy passages at other hotels.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The hotel's main buffet restaurant, Sterlizia, is a large, bright room which serves all three meals of the day. A large choice of fruit, pastries and hot food is available at breakfast while at lunch time and in the evening an international menu is offered with themes several times per week such Canarian, Mexican, Italian and Spanish. The room itself is nicely laid out and contemporary canvases on the wall help to give ambiance to the space. Those with special dietary requirements can consult with the restaurants professional and efficient staff to arrange a gluten-free menu for whichever meals you need. The Breeze Panoramic lobby bar is a pleasant place to take a drink with stylish black and white furniture in a room with deep red walls, modern art prints and a great view of Costa Adeje, especially from the bar's terrace. Open all day it serves beverages and light snacks. The pool's snack bar, La Palapa, is open during the day and is the place to come for refreshing drinks and something light to eat on an all inclusive basis.

    To know

The Jardines del Teide, you'll not be surprised to hear, gives over a huge amount of its surface area to gardens, 12,000m² in fact! This not only makes for beautiful surroundings, but also provides an alternative to your room of the bar in which to relax. Another admirable claim the hotel is able to make, is that the entire property is accessible to those guests in a wheelchair. While this shouldn't be something to give them a pat on the back over (it should be standard), the reality is they are one of very few. They have also taken into consideration the special dietary requirements of certain guests and have a gluten-free food policy.

One to be considered by those on a budget, the Oro Negro is a basic hotel with basic facilities. A slightly dated property, it is quite a distance from the beach, but is just opposite a golf course. The place does feel ever so slightly claustrophobic, however if you plan simply to eat and sleep here and then head out to the beach or elsewhere each day then you should perhaps consider this to be your base on the island. Recommended primarily for couples.

Villa Cortes is an exceptional place in the Canary Islands: its refined cuisine, remarkable architecture, service quality and comfortable rooms is to the taste of the most demanding customers, who will have the impression of lodging in a luxury Mexican hacienda. Surely one of our favourite destinations, which guarantees a satisfying and peaceful stay, for honeymoon for example.

The Tenerife is similar to its sister hotel, Puerto de la Cruz, in the north, in that it is a perfectly respectable family hotel (better in some senses as it as a miniclub and is closer to the sea) but there is really nothing that makes it stand out from the other hundreds of hotels on the island. The rooms are pretty standard, the food just edible and the public spaces could do with cheering up a bit. That said, it is right on the beach and there is a strong animation team meaning this hotel is suitable for families with several children as well as couples who don't mind a lively atmosphere. Certainly not the four-star property it claims to be but worth a look if you're looking to avoid spending huge amounts.

A family hotel in the heart of one of the south's resorts, La Siesta is a run-of-the-mill hotel with decent but not exceptional facilities which represents a relatively good value place to stay for an all inclusive break. Slightly dated, it has large, comfortable rooms, a full programme for kids and even a wellness centre. However if you are looking for high quality service and a top notch infrastructure you may want to look elsewhere.

One of our favourite of all family hotels in Tenerife, the Green Garden is a no-brainer if you're looking for guaranteed good times. There is a certain atmosphere that reigns over the resort which we didn't find in too many other places. What's more, it's large enough to have decent facilities to meet the needs of most but intimate enough that you don't feel choked. Good accommodation is married with tasty food and a hard-working animation team to create what is a great choice for the kids.

Las Palmeras is a middle-of-the-range family hotel which will no doubt appeal to those looking for good value from their holiday. It has to be said that despite some newly renovated rooms and features such as the Italian restaurant, it remains a little characterless and impersonal given its size (over 500 rooms). We feel that it is missing that extra something that would mark it out from its rivals although it rests a reasonable option which is unlikely to disappoint (nor overwhelm for that matter). If you want to go for an H10, there are better.

This is one of the more classy acts in Tenerife. A hotel primarily for adults, it is intimate, smart and relaxing while close to the beach and town centre. It has stylish, well equipped rooms (all of which face the sea), an excellent restaurant and a magnificent new wellness centre to boot. The staff too is first class and will do everything to make your stay a memorable one. We highly recommend this property to those looking for something a bit special and who want to get away from the noisy, impersonal characteristics of the large hotels.

The Cleopatra has a lot going for it. It has good spacious rooms, its food is very good, the beach is just outside and it has access to one of the finest kids clubs around (at its sister hotel the Mediterranean Palace next door). It can be quite confusing to find your way around the three buildings which make up the hotel, however once you get the hang of it you'll realise that you made a good choice.
