The location of the Baia do Sol is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It is an advantage in that the town of Ponta do Sol is far from noisy, as there isn't much to do there. The disadvantage resides in the fact that this place is far away from everything. It is hard to imagine a whole week's holiday spent here without hiring a car to explore the island. However, every guest room at the Baia do Sol offers a superb view of the sea.

The Baia do Sol is in Ponta Do Sol, west of Funchal. Thanks to the motorway, it will only take 20 minutes to reach the capital city of Madera. It will take about 35 minutes to get to the airport.
The 71 guest rooms of the hotel are divided over four floors, and all have a view of the sea. However, they don't all have a balcony. Inside, the rooms are simply huge compared to all of the standard rooms we generally visit. Their white and beige decoration makes them look elegant and refined, and their wooden furniture blends in perfectly with the decor. The bathrooms aren't as spacious, but their size is enough to feel very comfortable. In terms of amenities, everything is provided: there is a television, a free safe and a refrigerator, among other things. Room service, however, is only available in the daytime.
Since it was built in 2001, the hotel hasn't undergone any major renovation. Nevertheless, the lobby exudes modernity, thanks to its contemporary furniture and decoration. It would certainly benefit from better lighting, though. To the right-hand side of the room, you will find the hotel's indoor pool and a tiny, very basic gym. The three available apparatus show little spots of rust here and there. To the other side are the hotel's bar and spacious and comfortable lounge. The restaurant is set up in an extension of this room. The Baia do Sol isn't a seaside resort, which is made clear by the lack of outdoor facilities. It is possible, however, to access a large rooftop terrace.
Food and drink
The hotel's main restaurant is on the ground floor. When eating in this pleasant room, you will really wish that there was a terrace for having your meal outside. All meals are served as a buffet, where international dishes are available, although choice is rather limited. The decoration in black and red makes the room look elegant, but these colours cause the space to be rather dark. There is enough space between the tables for everyone to feel that their privacy can be respected. The bay windows look out to the street, which may give you the feeling that you are eating in a shop window...
A public beach stretches out in front of the hotel, but it consists of black sand, mainly covered with stones and rocks. This landscape is typical of the volcanic island of Madera.
