Amy Adejokun Section editor

Peppers Beach Club belongs to a large hotel group that owns 140 properties in Australia and New Zealand. It enjoys an ideal location, just a stone's throw from the town centre and no distance at all from Four Mile Beach. The one drawback of its roadside location is the noise of the traffic that can sometimes be heard from inside. As far as the service is concerned, the staff are very friendly and will not hesitate to help you if you need it. Depending on the time of year of your visit, you are just as likely to bump into families here as couples.

    Location 9.97 /10

The hotel is right at the centre of Port Douglas, in Davidson Street, so the town's shops and restaurants are no more than a few minutes away. The public beach is about 200m from the hotel and Cairns airport is just under 45 minutes away by car (34 mi).

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

All of the rooms are considered as suites and are housed in 3 white buildings: Tower Building, Lagoon Building, and Beach Building. They can be distinguished from one another by their size and location. Each has a whirlpool bath on the terrace, plus a small summer lounge. Inside, the rooms are spacious, very comfortable, and pleasantly decorated, with modern features prevailing. The bathroom opens onto the main room, but it can be sectioned off with a large, opaque glass door. The rooms are equipped with a full array of facilities, including a television, mini bar with tea and coffee-making facilities, and air conditioning.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Peppers Beach Club is a moderate-sized town hotel with high quality facilities. Its small lobby is in the open air and consists of a stylish reception and 2 large lounge areas furnished with big, modern and comfortable sofas. It offers a fine view of the lagoon-shaped swimming pool below, which has its own fine white sand in addition to clear water. Unfortunately, the solarium is not big enough and there are not enough deckchairs when you consider the number of guests. Children are perfectly safe in this area, as there is a safety barrier around the entire swimming pool. It is a spot that is just as pretty by day as by night.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The Sublime Bar and Grill Restaurant provides a really nice setting for your meal. This room is also in the open air and even has its own little terrace. However, owing to the limited number of tables, it is hard to see how everyone can sit out here at the same time. The modern decor is stylish and very pleasant, and there is the added bonus of a view over the swimming pool. Breakfast is served as a continental buffet, but the choices are rather limited. Having said that, it does include homemade pastries. Anything you order in addition to the buffet will be charged extra, even the hot chocolate for children. Lunch and dinner are both served à la carte. The chef prepares international dishes and the cuisine is good quality. Also, barbecues are organised on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Peppers Beach Club is not on the sea front, but Four Mile Beach can be accessed quickly and easily. As you might guess from the name, the beach is long, but wide as well, so you will have no difficulties finding somewhere to stretch out! The beach is public, and although it does not have any special facilities, deckchairs and parasols are available to hire. The fine sand and clear water are perfect for a swim. However, during the rainy season, the Coral Sea, like the rest of Queensland's coastline, is infested by tiny jellyfish that you will probably want to avoid. A section of the coastline has been netted off to create an area where it is safe to swim, but unfortunately it is very small...

    To know

If markets are your thing, bear in mind that the Port Douglas market is held from 8:00am to 2:00pm on Sundays.
Scuba divers will be delighted to know the Great Barrier Reef is only an hour and a half away by boat.
