Despite its sea-facing location, this is an elegant and classic hotel that has little in common with standard seaside resorts. It is actually designed as an urban hotel, so luckily, the beautiful beach and the sea compensate for the lack of swimming pools. Sports enthusiasts and those in search of lots of entertainment will be in for a disappointment, but it's definitely the place for you if you want to enjoy some tranquillity and a good spa.

    • To know

    • The Conchiglia Azzurra hotel is in Porto Cesareo, close to the sea, in a residential area with very few shops.

Gallipoli and Lecce are three quarters of an hour away by car and Leuca, on the Southern tip of Salento at the heel of Italy's boot, is one hour and twenty minutes away.

Bari airport is 110mi away but Brindisi airport is closer, 46mi away.

    • The hotel has 67 rooms which are all decorated in the same classical style, but are different in terms of size, accommodation capacity and the view they afford. However, all are both pleasant and welcoming. They include a designer bed, a sofa (when the size of the room allows), wooden furniture and storage units, and light and thick curtains, and are nicely decorated in cream, beige, brown and blue tones. The carefully thought-out lighting which filters in through the light-coloured curtains makes the atmosphere in the rooms all the more cosy and warm.

As far as amenities are concerned, the rooms are equipped with a digital LCD-screen TV, individual air-conditioning, a mini-bar, a safe and a telephone.

Unfortunately, there are only around 6 units that include a balcony, and the bathrooms, despite being clean and convenient, aren't up to the standard set in the rest of the establishment,
    • The Conchiglia Azzurra hotel opened in 2003 and isn't really a seaside resort hotel, as it has nothing in common with the traditionally noisy and lively tourist villages. If you can't survive without a swimming pool or a game of mini-football, this isn't the place for you. The hotel offers high-quality facilities, and its style is classically elegant. It faces a marvellous beach, which is easily accessible, just across the street. Its main asset is the small but well-equipped spa: Kneipp circuit, massage room with thermal bed, sauna, Turkish baths, hydromassage bathtub and sensory shower.

The reception desk occupies a rather traditional entrance hall, with sofas, rugs and lamps, plants and small, dark wood display cabinets. This quiet area is really enjoyable in the evenings for watching TV or playing cards.

Generally speaking, apart from the odd mishap in terms of style, as seen in the rather doubtful aesthetic qualities of the corridors that lead to the rooms, we thought that this was a rather nice establishment.
    • The large restaurant room is decorated with the same care and in the same classical style as the other areas in the hotel, with beige, blue and white tables in sufficient numbers to accommodate all of the hotel's guests.

There are a few tables set out on the terrace, and these are mainly used by those having a drink at the bar, which is unfortunately a rather dark room. Even during the day the curtains only let in small amounts of daylight, but you might find that it's to your advantage if you're constantly trying to escape the heat!

Breakfast is served as a buffet and the other meals come with table service. For the latter, the menu changes every day and includes a choice of 3 or 4 starters and main courses. There is a choice of typical specialities or dishes inspired by the Italian culinary tradition, but the main ingredient is fish. The helpings are copious and all products are fresh.
    • There is a small residential street to cross to get from the beach to the hotel. The site is surrounded by splendid nature, and it boasts fine sand and crystal-clear water worthy of the best tropical beaches. It's a pure gem, but it does get a bit too crowded during the high season.

There is a beach service available (basically a parasol and two deckchairs are provided per room) which, depending on the formula you choose, may or may not be included in the price. The hotel has a boutique-bar, which stays open all the time. Sports enthusiasts can choose from canoeing and water volleyball: there are two poles in the sea holding up a net.
    • It stays open all year round and is popular among families and Italian couples during the high season, and among French or British tourists and business travellers during the low season.

The lack of entertainment and the elegant decor place this hotel among the more relaxing establishments. Maybe things will change next summer, though, as management plans to hire an entertainment team. In 2010, the only thing here dedicated to children was its kids club.

The hotel does have an outdoor car park with CCTV.
