The Iberostar Cala Barca is located in the heart of a fragrant pine forest, by the charming little creek of Cala Barca, 2 mi from Porto Pedro harbour and 4 mi from the large resort of Cala d'Or on the southeast coast of Majorca. The famous natural reserve of Cala Mondrago is just 2,300 ft away and Palma airport is 40 mi away, so allow 45 minutes for transfers.
The Iberostar Cala Barca's accommodation consists of spacious apartments (409 sq ft), equipped with a kitchen, with a micro-wave oven, a fridge and tea and coffee-making facilities. The decoration is standard and typical of the Iberostar chain: yellow curtains, bedspreads, sofas and wall-paper, plus a few pictures. Fitted with parquet flooring or tiles, they are equipped with individual air-conditioning, an electronic safe (with a code) available for a fee, a telephone and a balcony with three white plastic chairs, a coffee table and a clothes-drying rack. The large flat screen satellite television (30 channels) is in the lounge area, itself equipped with two sofa-beds, a wooden coffee table, four chairs and a round or square table. As for the bathroom, it is rather small and includes a shower or a bathtub (fitted with a handle and a flexible showerhead), a hair-dryer, a toilet, and some Iberostar hospitality products.
Built in 1999, the Iberostar Club Cala Barca was in great need of a renovation, which should be completed by August 2010. This large complex's 779 bedrooms are spread out over 25 two-floor buildings, painted with pale colours. It is a shame that there aren't any lifts to take the luggage up to the second floor though! The resort is huge: it stretches over a 30 acre estate, and the setting is very pleasant under the fragrant pine forest. You have access to two large twin pools set on two levels, with hydro-massage jets; they are not very wide but they are approximately 330 ft long! The deep end is 7.8 ft deep and free diving initiation lessons are available. As for the children, they have three little pools just for them. You can only swim from 10:00am to 7:00pm, afterwards, it is not allowed because of the chemicals used to clean the water. A little further up, you will find the pedestrian street with its many shops, followed by a host of sports amenities: 4 tennis courts, a sports ground, a miniature golf course and a gym equipped with the latest apparatus.
Food and drink
The main restaurant can take a capacity of 700 guests in a large hall, the decoration of which lacks a little imagination. Guests can help themselves from two symmetrical buffets, so as to avoid queuing, and show cooking is offered. The cuisine is international with a few local specialities, such as paella or local cured ham carved on request. Theme nights are also organised. The second, smaller buffet is more pleasant and it has a terrace on which Majorcan specialities are served. At the end of your meal, do not miss out on the delicious herbal schnapps which will help you digest! Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10:30am, lunch from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and dinner from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Next to the Majorcan buffet, a pizza parlour is open from 12:30pm to 4:00pm. The latter has a terrace area, where it is possible to have breakfast from 9:30am to 12:00pm. The beach bar serves snacks from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Do not miss out on the afternoon tea served from 4:00pm to 6:00pm with tea, coffee and cakes! In the evening, the bar organises shows and serves numerous cocktails until 1:00am. Video games and a pinball machine are also on offer for your entertainment.
Since its renovation in 2010, the Iberostar Club Cala Barca now has a Thai Zen SPAce - the wellness concept of the Majorcan hotel group Iberostar. Open from 10:00am to 7:00pm, this little spa has four massage rooms, but we're still waiting for the heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi for a more comprehensive well-being centre!
A small pathway will take you through the pine trees to the very peaceful creek of Cala Barca. There isn't any equipment or amenities on the beaches: no deckchairs, parasols, or water sports, but the setting is superb and well-preserved. If you need to rinse yourself off, there are swimming pool showers that you can use though. There are no life-guards but this little creek really isn't dangerous: there are neither currents nor waves here. A beach bar serves snacks from 12:00pm to 4:30pm. Another pathway leads the way to the next creek, the famous reserve of Cala Mondrago, listed as a nature reserve, 2,300 ft away.
The downside is that your mobile phones will hardly pick up any signal here. You can surf the net at the reception on one of the four computers, but the connection is rather expensive (?1 for 10 minutes). The Iberostar Club Cala Barca was due to be renovated by August 2010, with the hope of a fourth star and a Thai Zen SPAce quality label - the wellness concept of the Majorcan hotel group Iberostar. The all-inclusive option is in use from 7:30am to 10:00pm. Horse riding enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the hotel has its own stud farm, which is rather uncommon! Children can ride a pony around the arena for free, but you will have to pay for a trail ride on a pony or in a carriage. If watching films is more your thing, a television room in the hotel has a wide selection of DVDs. Be aware that the resort is open from April to October and 40% of the clientele is German and 30% French. Don't worry if you haven't got any cash on you, a cash point is available in the reception hall.
