It's not only sleek good looks that make the Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague a hit - it's also the discreet service, attention to detail and central location that make it one of city's top places to stay. The very first hotel to come from the Buddha-Bar brand (following a successful global franchise) was not launched in Paris, New York or even Dubai, but Prague - where history and beauty come together to create an impossibly romantic setting. Every lovers' getaway needs the hotel to match...and we've found it in this exclusive boutique offering.

    Location 8.8 /10

With an excellent location in the historic old town (Prague 1), Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague is within easy walking distance to most of the city's sights; Old Town Square and Charles Bridge are a three minute and 10 minute walk respectively. Prague International Airport is about 10 miles away. The city's best restaurants, bars, shopping and tourist attractions are practically on the hotel's doorstep.

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

There are 39 rooms (36 rooms and three luxury suites) at Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague; of these, 12 superior rooms (35m²), 23 premier rooms (40m²) and three suites measuring between 58m² and 78m². All accommodation is immaculate, spacious and tastefully decorated. Besides the usual amenities, the folks at Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague have upped the ante with Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems (including a special Buddha Bar music library), Nespresso coffee machines, remote-controlled drapes and stunning bathrooms with high-tech Japanese Balena 8000 toilets.

The décor is consistent with the rest of the hotel, boasting sumptuous furnishings in shades of deep red and burnished gold. The attention to detail is evident everywhere; from the delicate lampshades with Czech crystal to the evening turndown service with fresh orchids and chocolate treats, the Taittinger champers in the mini-bar, or the L'Occitane toiletries and flat screen televisions in the bathroom. The overall feeling is one of downright luxury and therefore the highest levels of comfort. The rooms make the perfect romantic hideaway, so if you're there with your darling, you probably won't want to leave!

Should you be lucky enough to be in a suite, you'll enjoy a massive bathroom with Jacuzzi. Meanwhile the bathrooms in the superior or premier rooms are also spacious with free standing 'musical' bathtubs. Each bathroom, no matter the category of room, is awash in a pearly red, pink and orange mosaic tile decoration and finished off with an impressive mosaic dragon.

The only shame is that due to its city centre location, there are no spectacular views from the hotel rooms, with many backing on to inner city apartments and streetscapes. But there is enough eye candy inside the rooms to distract from this fact. Also, the many switches and remote controls for various lights and curtains etc can be overwhelming; sometimes, simple is best.

    Overview 8.95 /10

Catering to all the senses, Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague creates not only a relaxing environment, but a sensual, dare we say it sexy haven to escape to after a busy day of sightseeing. If you are already familiar with the Buddha-Bar name, you'll know that it expertly mélanges sleek contemporary design with exquisite Asian décor and cuisine. This five-star boutique hotel is small and therefore intimate but nevertheless boasts two bars, two restaurants (including the famous Buddha Bar Restaurant) a 24 hour fitness room with state of the art gear, plus a spa zone with Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and steam room (the spa zone can be privatised for up to eight people). We loved the divine 'Buddhattitude Spa' in-room treatments; try the indulgent aromatherapy massage personalised to your needs. Although there is no day spa as such, it is a real treat to have a therapist come to you, relaxing and truly blissful!

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The hotel boasts two on-site bars and restaurants. While the Buddha-Bar Hotel concept may be relatively new, the chain of bars and restaurants from which its name is derived is not. Like the Buddha-Bars in Paris, Beirut, Sao Paolo and New York before it, the Buddha-Bar Prague is a popular drinking and dining destination for locals and visitors alike.

The bar and restaurant are tucked away on the lower ground floor of the hotel, with a wide staircase guiding patrons into an intimate den (the bar on the mezzanine level and the restaurant below). An enormous statue of a sitting Buddha dominates the room, while oversized Czech crystal chandeliers hang from the ornate ceilings. DJs spin appropriate electro-lounge morsels for the punters who come to see and be seen. The cocktail list is long and varied, while on the menu are mouth-watering morsels with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese influences such as the curry shrimp in banana leaf or the black cod with miso and yuzu sauce. Diners can also opt for the more elaborate tasting menus - strictly for gourmets!

Meanwhile, the Siddharta Café is on the ground floor of the hotel and only steps away from the lobby, boasting a unique pop art "eatmosphere" for all day dining. Hotel guests start their day off here with a hearty breakfast served à la carte. There is a slightly different look and feel from the rest of the hotel. From the vibrant orange walls, to the banquettes and chairs upholstered in a burst of bright turquoise fabric, Siddharta Cafe is a fun and funky place to consume a casual meal. The highlights are the jumbo Czech crystal chandeliers and the Siddarta statues glowing in a multitude of colours, dominating the room. During the day, it is a popular place for local workers to conduct their business lunches, and during the evenings it is a quiet place to enjoy the international menu with Asian accents. We loved the incredibly fresh calamari tagliatelle with coriander and pickled lemon, followed by the butter fish fillet with black olive crust and cashew rice.

    To know

The hotel is a relatively new kid on the block, opening in 2009. Fans of the brand will already know of the Buddha-Bar CD compilations, but did you know there is also a Buddha-Bar Spa in the French town of Evian-les-Bains?

The King's Court is one of the newest 5 star hotels to open in the Czech capital. It has taken up residence in a fantastic building in an ideal location close to the metro stations and tram stops, with the Municipal House just opposite. Generously sized and decorated in a modern style, it has fabulous amenities and several different room categories to choose from. However, we were not totally satisfied with the originality of the place, and apart from some flashy details, the finishing touches - the furniture, for example - leave a lot to be desired.

The Ventana hotel is ideally located at the heart of the Old Town and is a charming little place providing high-quality, low-capacity accommodation. The modern and elegant decor of this uncharacteristic hotel is sure to win you over, particularly when you take into account the original facilities, which include Duplex rooms which can accommodate up to 4 people and afford beautiful views across the rooftops of the city. If we had to find fault, it would be that the minimalist decor in the guest rooms leaves them rather characterless.

But those who have an eye will quickly discover this building's history. This hotel is infused with particular refinement, the exact place for fans of boutique hotels.
