A former bank headquarters and part of a Italian hotel chain, with neo-Renaissance decor and facilities of a palace: the Carlo IV hotel is one of the most prestigious addresses in Prague. Those who already know the Boscolo hotels - having stayed at the Dei Dogi in Venetia or the Exedra in Rome - would choose this hotel with their eyes closed.

    Location 6.98 /10

Located on Senovazne namesti, about 985 ft from the railway station of Hlavni Nazdrazi (subway Na Florenc). The Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge are a 20 minute walk away. The airport is 9 miles away (30 minutes).

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

There are 152 rooms divided into 5 categories, from "classic" (standard) to the presidential suite. As for the room areas, they range from 215 ft² to 1,185 ft². Is this hotel one of the best choices among the numerous hotels in the region? The deluxe room, with its spacious area of 290 ft², is still an affordable place. The lodging there is princely, in a settting of Italian furniture (the hotel chain is also furnished in Italian style). Polished wood, moulded and sculpted to form a chair leg, the contours of the headboard or the desk. Shiny leather and satin fabric complement the decoration. The facilities are worthy of a hotel with great standing: big screen television broadcasting 15 channels, direct dial telephone, a free safe, a minibar, air conditioning. Coloured marble decorates the bathroom, equipped with a bathtub, a hairdryer, bathrobes. However, the personal skin care products (branded Etro) offer only male fragrances.

    Overview 9.20 /10

The lobby of the Carlo IV hotel is spectacular. The neo-Renaissance style of the old edifice (built in 1890, just before the start of the Art Nouveau epoch in Prague) has been retained and here is what it exhibits: a moulded ceiling, columns of black alabaster, stucco and gilding. The flooring is made in marble mosaic, the lounges are richly furnished in leather... From a bank in the 19th century to a hotel in 2003, the place has embellished. The hotel has an Italian style, but yet respects the typical architecture of Prague (see the fresco overlooking the stairs on the 4th floor). You would also appreciate the indoor swimming pool in the basement. It is big enough to have a nice swim (about 65 ft long) and is freely accessible to customers, along with the whirlpool next to it. The hotel provides a gym and a spa offering a variety of care treatments using products of the Italian brand, Vagheggi.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

There are three areas offering restaurant services: the breakfast room dominated by a glass roof, the high-tech bar with metal counter and the restaurant room for the evening. Of these three areas, the most pleasant is the breakfast room (a row of giant sun yellow lampshades emphasize the arrangement of the tables); the most futuristic is the bar (where lighting so strong that you feel like you are in an ultra-trendy club). As for the restaurant in the evening, its pearl grey benches, soft lighting and few tables offer the best place for conversation sotto voce between bites of salmon in mousseline sauce, chicken with mushrooms or beef tenderloin in pepper sauce. Served a la carte, the dishes include Czech or Italian specialities. After lunch, take a drink - and a cigar - at the cigar bar. Beside the counter there is former strongroom: it has kept its original decor. Impressive!
For those who enjoy variety at breakfast, the buffet served in the morning is a full buffet with hot and cold dishes.

    To know

The Carlo IV is part of the Italian Boscolo chain, which runs several luxury hotels in Europe (in Rome, Venice and Budapest in particular). It is named after Carlo IV - the Italian appellation of King Charles IV (the Holy Roman Emperor). This sovereign who was born into the royal family of Luxembourg ruled from 1346 to 1378.At that time, the kingdoms of Luxembourg, Bohemia, Germany, Italy and Burgundy formed the Holy Roman Empire. Charles IV made Prague the capital of this empire (which was previously in Rome). It was under his reign that Prague was endowed with its most popular monument: the famous Charles Bridge.

The building that houses the hotel has an unusual history: it used to be a bank. Details about its past have been preserved. In the lobby, majestic in its neo-Renaissance style, you can see the location of old counter services. More surprising: the cigar bar, where some of the tables are located in the former money vaults, armoured in metal to prevent against fire and secured with multi-point locks to resist burglars.

    Advice on lodging

The rooms overlooking the street are largely exposed to the traffic noise. Light sleepers should ask for a room overlooking the court: guaranteed quietness!

The Central is both a hotel and one of the key stopovers to set off on a visit to the Art Nouveau quarter in Prague. Admire its façade (particularly at night); once in the lobby, surprise... But those who have an eye will quickly discover this building's history. This hotel is infused with particular refinement, the exact place for fans of boutique hotels.

This hotel has good comfort and is well-located for not wasting time on public transport; there is a restaurant open for all meals during the day (which is not always the case with hotels in Prague). The hotel has a personal touch that willl definitely win over "book addicts." Kafka used to work at this address before it became a hotel.

The King's Court is one of the newest 5 star hotels to open in the Czech capital. It has taken up residence in a fantastic building in an ideal location close to the metro stations and tram stops, with the Municipal House just opposite. Generously sized and decorated in a modern style, it has fabulous amenities and several different room categories to choose from. However, we were not totally satisfied with the originality of the place, and apart from some flashy details, the finishing touches - the furniture, for example - leave a lot to be desired.

Guests who are familiar with the Best Western chain might be a little disappointed with the facilities here, especially the lack of air-conditioning. If you can manage without that, though, the hotel does have other things going for it, like its bar, restaurant and little gym. However, on the whole, the rates are on the expensive side.

The Ventana hotel is ideally located at the heart of the Old Town and is a charming little place providing high-quality, low-capacity accommodation.
