The Riverside is one of our favourite accommodation in Prague, as it brings together everything to spend a nice weekend: its location away from the town centre without being off (you can tour the district of Mala Strana from the hotel on foot), its decoration and its groomed service, its rooms, half of whom face the Vltava (the Moldau in Czech).

    Location 5.36 /10

The hotel is located on Janackovo nabrezi (subway station: Andel), along the Vltava, 10 minutes away on foot from the district of Mala Strana (at the foot of the Castle). The Old Town, on the other side of the Charles Bridge, can be reached in 20 minutes by foot or 10 minutes by tram.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The hotel has 45 rooms, all quite spacious (for a town hotel): 270 ft² for the double rooms, 430 ft² for the triple rooms, 540 ft² for the 3 suites and 700 ft² for the accommodation composed of a suite and a double connecting room (the "family river suite"). As for the view, 50% of the lodgings overlook the river and a surprising building, the Dancing House: it looks like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, but in vertical version. It is the work of the same North American architect Frank Gehry. As the Dancing House houses offices, and not works of art, it cannot be visited. Moreover, this is a good reason to ask for a room with a "river view" and on the upper floors preferably. Otherwise, the panorama will focus on the street or the courtyard formed by the block of buildings. The amenities are modest and cosy (bright walls, curtains in the Belle Epoque style); special mention for the bathrooms accessible by a swinging door in frosted glass and tiled with golden beige mosaics. In each bathroom you will find a bathtub, a hair dryer, bathrobes, welcome products branded The White Company (1 ounce capacity). The amenities include a television, direct dial telephone, air conditioning, a safe (free) and a minibar.

    Overview 8.20 /10

Opened in 2004, the Riverside is located in a 6-storey building with a neo-Renaissance façade (a style used in Prague before the Art Nouveau). There is no lobby. The entrance extends to a mezzanine, with the reception to the left (a reception counter made of varnished wood) and the bar to the right. The interior decoration is inspired by the Belle Epoque style (early 20th century) yet without being Art Nouveau. The most characteristic feature: the striped draperies matching the friezes of ceramics. Low chairs covered with red cloth, whose colours can be detected also partially on the walls. Besides the bar, there is no space for relaxation. There is no terrace for sunny days: it is a pity, given the location of the hotel. However, sports fans will not hesitate to use the swimming pool and the fitness club of the Americka Park (a residential hotel located in Prague 2, on the other side of the Vltava river). The access is free and the transfer is provided by the Riverside upon reservation at the reception.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Think about waking up early enough to take your time and enjoy the buffet at breakfast (do not each too much the night before). Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. in in the dining hall in the basement, where there is no view to the outside, but the space is optically magnified by mirrors, and here you can taste famous foods and watch the weather forecast as a documentary in real time on a flat screen TV opposite the entrance (a webcam is installed on the roof of the building). Garnish your plate with salmon and smoked herring, cheese, bread, fresh fruit... Scrambled eggs and omelettes are served at the table upon request. To eat during the rest of the day, you can only use the service at the bar, with a menu identical to that provided by the room service: sandwiches, salads and hot dishes (including pasta bolognese and chicken with basmati rice).

    To know

The Riverside is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (alike the Oberoi in Mauritius, the Vendome in Paris or the Desroches Island Resort in the Seychelles). The good news, it is much more affordable than some of the other hotels' "in the same boat". A definite advantage, this is all the more true since the hotel has a privileged location, an elegant decoration and a high level of service worth noticing. Without hesitation, this is our favourite lodging in Prague.

    A lodging tip:

Ask for a room overlooking the river (for an extra charge): the panorama is worth it. If you come along with your family, 10 such rooms ("river view junior suite") can accommodate up to 3 persons. One of these is linked to a double room, thus forming a comfortable shelter for up to 5 people.

If you already know Prague and don't want to stay in the town centre (Wenceslas Square), too noisy to your taste, try this hotel in Mala Strana. Its location is quite convenient for a visit to the Castle quarter on foot. If you dislike walking (because the area is a little bit sloped), trams pass just outside the hotel.

Located on a pretty little paved square with a peaceful little garden, the U Pava is something of a Baroque establishment where everyone plays a part in its history. The decor here is like something out of a fairy tale but with a touch of kitsch thrown in, resulting in soft, shadowy light, and a busy decor. The U Pava might not have the most comprehensive list of amenities to offer, but is a romantic destination with a lot of character. Do bear in mind, though, that since there is no lift it's not the best place for those with reduced mobility.

The guest rooms are spacious, and the hotel has a bar and a restaurant serving Italian specialities.

A hotel suitable for a stay outside the town centre without being too far from it either. It has a splendid view of Prague. In addition, the hotel has sports facilities, as it often hosts groups (for seminars and conferences). Comfort, service, and rooms neutraly decorated. Appropriate for this category of chain hotels.

It enjoys a very good location, offers a modest range of amenities and its rooms, which are decorated in a classic, cosy style, are small.

Remember the name of this hotel: you will definitely want to return, at least to dine. Because even if this hotel is not the best in its class, its dinner menu is unusual (steaks of all kinds). As for the rooms, they are pleasant if you love old style; nevertheless, the hotel is well situated.

The Ventana hotel is ideally located at the heart of the Old Town and is a charming little place providing high-quality, low-capacity accommodation. The modern and elegant decor of this uncharacteristic hotel is sure to win you over, particularly when you take into account the original facilities, which include Duplex rooms which can accommodate up to 4 people and afford beautiful views across the rooftops of the city. If we had to find fault, it would be that the minimalist decor in the guest rooms leaves them rather characterless.
