The Pousada Porto da Lua is a charming little hotel in a perfect beachside location. It is a stone's throw from the Projeto TAMAR sea turtle reserve in the village of Praia do Forte, to the north of Salvador de Bahia. Ideal if you want to get a feel for the Brazilian way of life, it is the perfect little hotel for a simple, restful stay, thanks to its tropical garden and bar restaurant. It is worlds away from the big resort hotels that seem to be springing up all over this part of Brazil. Marcus, the Swiss owner, will be more than happy to offer his advice for you to make the most of the region.

    Location 9.34 /10

This establishment is right next to the beach in the fishing village of Praia do Forte, 53 mi north of Salvador de Bahia, and a stone's throw from the Projeto TAMAR sea turtle reserve. Salvador de Bahia airport is 40 mi away and you should allow 45 minutes for the taxi journey.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The guest rooms in the Pousada Porto da Lua have a rustic feel with plenty of charm. Quite spacious, they are decorated in a pleasant tropical style. In one of the white exposed stone walls, a round mirror is embedded for you to admire your reflection. Fitted with tiling, the facilities include a television (Brazilian channels only), a digital code safe (free, in the bathroom), individual air conditioning, a mini bar fridge (water and soft drinks, charged), a telephone, and free Wifi Internet access. With a table and 2 chairs, the terrace also boasts its own hammock and a view over the garden, which stretches all the way down to the sea. The sound of the waves at nighttime will lull you to sleep: what bliss! The large bathroom is closed off by a bamboo door and has a fixed shower head, a toilet (don't throw anything away into the bowl, a bin is provided for this purpose), soap, and shampoo (but no shower gel). Room service is available from 4:00pm to 10:00pm.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Pousada Porto da Lua (which means 'gateway to the moon') was built in 1988 and renovated in September 2008. It consists of a single 3 storey building housing 26 guest rooms. Unlike the big hotel resorts with their ever present security barriers and overbearing security guards, the pousada and its garden leading peacefully down to the sea are serenity epitomised. There is no swimming pool but it is hard to disagree with Marcus, the owner, when he says you have the biggest pool in the world at your feet! The lawn is perfect for relaxation, and it is easy to kick back in one of the comfy cushioned deckchairs under the shade of a parasol and listen to the waves rolling in until the sun starts to set! The bar and restaurant are just next to the garden. There is a big television screen on which to watch sporting events, for example, and in the lobby, a cosy space has been created where you can read or surf the Internet, free of charge.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The hotel's open-sided restaurant is located next to the garden in a position overlooking the sea. It serves delicious Bahian cuisine à la carte, with specialities including seafood, fish, and seasonal tropical fruits. Breakfast is served from 8:00am to 10:00am, with a menu of fresh fruit, freshly squeezed fruit juices, local homemade pastries, and a deliciously runny omelette served in its cooking pot. Meals are then served continuously from midday until 10:30pm. We recommend you try the fish, which is excellent! The setting is tropical, with wooden tables, chairs, and colourful paintings. The bar is open from 11:00am to 11:00pm and serves a variety of cocktails, of course featuring the obligatory cachaça in a thousand different concoctions! If you feel peckish between 4:00pm and 5:00pm, you will find it hard to resist the delicious homemade cakes at teatime!

    Beach 7.95 /10

You will not be short of space on this massive (7.5 mi long) unspoilt beach where sea turtles come to lay their eggs. There are no deckchairs, parasols, or showers to detract from the nature of this impressive setting, with its palm trees stretching away into the distance! The water is quite choppy with big waves rolling in; it is, after all, the Atlantic Ocean! Surfers should certainly be in their element! International competitions are regularly held here on the beach. Beware of waves and currents, as the beach is unsupervised. When the tide goes out, it leaves behind little natural pools that are safe to swim in. If you prefer though, you can always stay up at the hotel, where deckchairs are laid out on the lawn. It is a good idea to bring beach sandals, as there are rocks lurking under the water. A 5 minute walk to the right will take you to the lighthouse and to the Projeto TAMAR sea turtle reserve.

    To know

Praia do Forte is the home of the Projeto TAMAR turtle protection project as well as the fort after which the village is named. The Projeto TAMAR is an eco-museum allowing visitors to observe sea turtles and sharks developing in large outdoor tanks. Dating back to 1980, this was one of the first centres created to protect a number of endangered species of sea turtle, including the Leatherback turtle, which can grow up to 2m in length and comes here to lay its eggs on the beach from September to March. The centre collects the eggs, looks after them until they hatch, and then releases the baby turtles into the sea. A total of 4 computers are provided with free Internet access for your use, and there is also free Wifi.

The Vila Gale is not a villa like its name might suggest but a massive "all-inclusive" resort on a large and beautiful beach between Praia do Forte and Salvador de Bahia. Entertainment, sport, water sports, spa, miniclub, the equipment and facilities are not lacking: the establishment has the second biggest swimming pool in Brazil. It's a hotel for the entire family.
