The Tenerife Playa is a delightful hotel, perfect for couples looking for a bit of class and quality at a reasonable price. A relaxed atmosphere reins over the hotel, in large part due to the absence of children, although of course they are very welcome. While the rooms and services of the hotel are of a high standard, it has two main trump cards: its restaurant and its location. This is definitely one to consider if you're looking to come to the north of the island.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Tenerife Playa has a dream location within the northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz. Not only is it right on the sea front with a small black sand beach just metres from the front entrance, but it also has on its doorstep all the main restaurants, bars and shops. If you are arriving to the hotel by car you may have difficulty parking right outside, but you'll find a space in one of the roads close by. The island's northern airport is 16 miles away by road while the southern airport is 56 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The Tenerife Playa has kept things simple with just two types of room: standard and junior suite. The former are of a generous size and boast well dressed beds, wooden furniture (desk, bedside tables, and drawers) finished in black, a regular television, an orchid and a Matisse print. There is a safe in the room (10? deposit and 15? per week thereafter) but no fridge, although one can be requested along with an à la carte minibar. The balcony, which also has good quality furniture, is only half enclosed so it is not totally private. A small WC is adjoined to the room which has bathtub with shower, hairdryer, bidet and toiletries in sachets. For more space and a little more comfort opt for a junior suite whose bedroom is identical (aside from the flatscreen television) but which has a separate living area, a larger balcony, a more generous bathroom and a sea view. If you are considering a junior suite, ask for one with a jacuzzi in the bathroom as not all have.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The entrance to the hotel is quite promising with a covered walkway going up to the front door topped by the shiny lettering of the name of the hotel and flanked by two tall palms. The lobby is small but welcoming with an old rustic wooden table to the right adorned with flowers, plants hanging from above, and to the left is the reception from behind which the staff will greet you with a smile and quickly check you in. Just under the stairs leading up to the sleek lounge on the first floor is a place to repose upon arriving at the hotel. Just outside are the two main swimming pools (one of which is heated in winter and has massage shower jets) and a children's pool which are surrounded by lush greenery, compensating for the otherwise grim view of the surrounding buildings (which block the sun in the early morning). As well as the cabanas by the pools, there is a solarium area behind which allows a bit more space to take in the rays. There are another two solariums in the hotel: one on the sixth floor and a nudist one on the tenth floor. Next to this is a small kids playground and a mutli-purpose sports court where the animator organises events for adults during the day such as archery, rifle shooting and ping pong. In the evening there is a professional show which takes place next to the Tinerfe Bar inside the hotel and which involves some type of singing or dancing. The rest of the hotel boasts pleasant common areas and lounges as well as easy to navigate corridors, at the end of some of which you can see just sea. While there is no wellness or fitness centre, there is a hairdresser which also does nails and aesthetics and a sauna which is charged at 7? per hour. In the public areas of the hotel there is complimentary wifi while you can receive 10 free minutes on the coin-operated PCs if you take the time to fill ou the hotel's questionnaire.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Tenerife Playa has just one buffet restaurant, but what a restaurant it is! Having arguably the best backdrop of any restaurant on the island, the view through the floor-to-ceiling windows is of the coast disappearing into the distance and of the waves crashing onto the rocks just outside. The rooms itself is also a spectacle, with finely laid tables and contemporary seating, it is both classy and comfortable. As for the food, well it is probably the best all round buffet we sampled. All dishes, of which there are plenty (for veggies too), were excellent and the paella was especially tasty. There is a 14 day cycle with the menus meaning you won't be eating the same thing twice during your stay and there are two themed dinners per week, including Mexican, Italian, Spanish and Canarian. The atmosphere is very civilised and the clinking of glasses and clattering of cutlery recall the sounds of a good restaurant. The snack bar by the pool, El Jardín, boasts also a fabulous setting. In front of the marble bar, surrounded by lush vegetation and under a canvas canopy are tables and chairs set out for enjoying a drink or lunch. The menu includes meat and fish dishes, pizza, pasta and lighter snacks such as sandwiches and sweets. The contemporary Bar Tinerfe, which has both indoor and outdoor seating areas, is open in the evening and represents the third and final food and drink outlet of the hotel.

    Beach

The closest beach is Playa de Martiánez. The beach enjoys fine white sand although this is mixed with a little seaweed once in the water, which is pretty clear. There is plenty of space in which to sunbathe and sufficient loungers, which are available at a fee (all beaches in Spain are public). Even in the high season one does not feel too claustrophobic. Note that it can get quite windy in this part of the coast.

    To know

While kids are very welcome at the Tenerife Playa, it is really a hotel for couples, many of which are middle-aged or older. There is a playground for kids and an English-speaking animator who will happily take care of any kids, however there is no dedicated kids club or animation programme for children.

      • Package deals in août 2011 Posted on 2013-12-03 En famille - 3 à 5 nuitées (Chambre avec vue)

Let's go !

      • Advantages

Aside from the hotel's proximity to the beach and the fact that it's located in a quiet residential area, there isn't a whole lot going for the Interpalace. We found it to be quite tired and dated (although clean and comfortable) and lacking a bit of atmosphere. This maybe because it is not a hotel intended for children (welcome though they are) or because the facilities are shared with the Bonanza across the way. The Interpalace would be best suited those staying for a long period (the rooms are very spacious) but who intend on spending most of their time outside. One to consider but lower down on the list?

A quiet, medium-sized hotel with a great location, the Las Vegas is a reasonable choice for couples looking for good value and who only require basic services. The rooms are of a good standard, the food is likewise decent without being ground-breaking and the hotel's public spaces are comfortable, if not a little dated and impersonal at times. While children are very welcome at the hotel, there is no dedicated miniclub or programme for kids and so they may have more fun elsewhere. For the beach though and nightlife, you couldn't get much closer.

The Semiramis stands right on the rocky shore and is a large and charmless 17-storey building which does, nevertheless, afford breath-taking panoramic views across the sea from the lobby, the guest rooms and the restaurant. To be perfectly honest, this 5* establishment is more what you would expect of a 4* and could do with a bit of a makeover in places. The surroundings here are very (perhaps too?) quiet and the hotel also has a spa and two swimming pools, the first bring indoor and heated, the second of semi-Olympic size. In a nutshell, this place is best-suited to couples of a certain age seeking a relaxing holiday by the sea.

This hotel is a charming little place that stands out among the large charmless resorts dominating the Tenerife landscapes. Located in the pedestrian centre of Puerto de La Cruz, the Marquesa occupies a historic building which was once the former residence of a Marquis, as its name indicates. This hotel doesn't exactly excel when it comes to the number of facilities on offer, but does nevertheless boast a panoramic rooftop swimming pool with a whirlpool offering pretty views over the sea, the tower of the church opposite, and Mount Teide, when it deigns to show itself!

Despite having been renovated in 1998 (which in hotel terms is quite a while back itself), the style of the hotel has no doubt remained the same since it opened in the 70s. It is a simple hotel with basic services, overwhelmingly catering for the older guest, hence the insistence on keeping the original, slightly dated style. Its location is the best, but it can boast good service and decent food, along with comfortable rooms and good views. Ideal for those simply looking to do very little for as long as possible!

The Luabay is probably the trendiest, and certainly the youngest, hotel in Puerto de la Cruz. It is a breath of fresh air in an area with many worn out hotels. It has a good range of services, spacious, functional rooms and a very good restaurant. While not entirely focused on families with kids, it does have entertainment for the little ones as well as adults too. Despite its distance from the beach, we'd definitely recommend this cool property for a fun-filled, stress-free break in the sun.
