This hotel is a charming little place that stands out among the large charmless resorts dominating the Tenerife landscapes. Located in the pedestrian centre of Puerto de La Cruz, the Marquesa occupies a historic building which was once the former residence of a Marquis, as its name indicates. This hotel doesn't exactly excel when it comes to the number of facilities on offer, but does nevertheless boast a panoramic rooftop swimming pool with a whirlpool offering pretty views over the sea, the tower of the church opposite, and Mount Teide, when it deigns to show itself!

    The hotel is located on the north coast of Tenerife in the lively pedestrian-only city centre of Puerto de la Cruz, close to the small harbour. There are no beaches nearby. To reach the hotel from Los Rodeos airport, which is 17 mi north of Tenerife, allow 30 minutes by car. Allow 1h 30m from Tenerife Sur airport, which is located some 68 mi away. Finally, about 25 mi separate the hotel from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

    The guest rooms are tiny: 18m², the same number as the selection of satellite channels available on the flat-screen television. As regards the decor, ceramic tiled floors and white and light green walls brighten the surroundings, despite the fact that there are no pictures on the walls. The facilities are limited to a digital safe (charged) that is spacious enough to store a laptop, a telephone, and free Wi-Fi access. There is no refrigerator, air-conditioning, fan, or room service.
    Some 60 rooms have a small balcony with a round table and two chairs with views overlooking the pedestrian street, a church steeple, or the Teide volcano. The others have a window overlooking the pedestrian street. Four of the rooms have a large terrace with two deckchairs with mattresses and a parasol. The bathrooms are small but pretty with their Guanches patterns (the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the Canaries) and are equipped with a bathtub with a flexible shower, two soaps, a toilet, and a bidet. However, there is no hair-dryer.

    The first impressions of the Marquesa are arresting: a superb period façade (1712), with its typical Canarian wooden balconies, sets the tone, followed by a lovely patio garden reminiscent of Latin American urban colonial houses. Formerly the private residence of a Marquis, it was converted into a private hotel in 1995. The reception is located on the patio, while a museum is in the works for the 1st floor. After this promising first impression, it is difficult not to be disappointed by the rest of the facilities: an ordinary 5 storey building served by 3 lifts and containing the 157 guest rooms which were renovated in 2009.
    For swimming options, there are two pools to choose from, both open from 9:00am to 8:00pm. Rectangular and fairly large but only 16 inches deep, the first one is mainly reserved for children. The second is ideally situated on the panoramic rooftop terrace and enjoys superb views over the sea, the harbour, the mountains, the churches of Puerto de la Cruz, and the Lago Martinez. Both have a solarium area with synthetic green carpeting, showers, toilets, deckchairs with mattresses, and parasols. Towels are provided in the guest rooms.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

    Buffet meals are served in a room that can accommodate up to 140 people but it is more pleasant to settle in on the terrace of the à la carte restaurant which offers excellent Canarian and Spanish local specialities (fish, seafood, tapas, etc.). Meals are served from 7:30am to 10:00am, 1:00pm to 3:00pm, and 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

    If you are arriving by car, the hotel is tricky to get to, and on top of that you will need to use the public car park which is some way from the hotel. The Marquesa cannot be described as a seaside hotel, since even though it is only 500m from the ocean, there are no beaches in the immediate vicinity. You will need a car to reach the beaches of Puerto de la Cruz. Plans are underway to open a museum on the upper floor of the charming garden patio of what was once the home of the Marquis of the region. An interesting note: the famous German botanist Alexander von Humboldt stayed here. This hotel belongs to the local hotel group Trianflor, which owns 5 establishments in Puerto de la Cruz, including the Chimisay. The Marquesa attracts an older, international clientele.

      Located by the sea and close to the Lago Martianez aquatic complex, the Atlantis hotel is an outfit with a traditional and somewhat old-fashioned style. Although equipped with a mini-club, it is more convenient for couples rather than families.

      A quiet, medium-sized hotel with a great location, the Las Vegas is a reasonable choice for couples looking for good value and who only require basic services. The rooms are of a good standard, the food is likewise decent without being ground-breaking and the hotel's public spaces are comfortable, if not a little dated and impersonal at times. While children are very welcome at the hotel, there is no dedicated miniclub or programme for kids and so they may have more fun elsewhere. For the beach though and nightlife, you couldn't get much closer.

      Despite having been renovated in 1998 (which in hotel terms is quite a while back itself), the style of the hotel has no doubt remained the same since it opened in the 70s. It is a simple hotel with basic services, overwhelmingly catering for the older guest, hence the insistence on keeping the original, slightly dated style. Its location is the best, but it can boast good service and decent food, along with comfortable rooms and good views. Ideal for those simply looking to do very little for as long as possible!

      The Tenerife Playa is a delightful hotel, perfect for couples looking for a bit of class and quality at a reasonable price. A relaxed atmosphere reins over the hotel, in large part due to the absence of children, although of course they are very welcome. While the rooms and services of the hotel are of a high standard, it has two main trump cards: its restaurant and its location. This is definitely one to consider if you're looking to come to the north of the island.

      The Luabay is probably the trendiest, and certainly the youngest, hotel in Puerto de la Cruz. It is a breath of fresh air in an area with many worn out hotels. It has a good range of services, spacious, functional rooms and a very good restaurant. While not entirely focused on families with kids, it does have entertainment for the little ones as well as adults too. Despite its distance from the beach, we'd definitely recommend this cool property for a fun-filled, stress-free break in the sun.

      The Semiramis stands right on the rocky shore and is a large and charmless 17-storey building which does, nevertheless, afford breath-taking panoramic views across the sea from the lobby, the guest rooms and the restaurant. To be perfectly honest, this 5* establishment is more what you would expect of a 4* and could do with a bit of a makeover in places. The surroundings here are very (perhaps too?) quiet and the hotel also has a spa and two swimming pools, the first bring indoor and heated, the second of semi-Olympic size. In a nutshell, this place is best-suited to couples of a certain age seeking a relaxing holiday by the sea.
