The resort of Los Jameos Playa is one of the largest hotels in Puerto del Carmen and is noticeable straight away with its white walls and blue window frames. You will notice its logo, a blue seahorse, shining brightly above the complex. Situated a two minute walk from Playa de los Pocillos, the largest beach in the area, Los Jameos is a good bet for families wanting all the necessary facilities and to be in the heart of the action. Also a good choice for tennis enthusiasts as the hotel has four tennis courts in very good shape as well as a renowned tennis instructor on site (lessons are at an extra cost).

    Location 7.0 /10

Los Jameos is situated along Playa de los Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen, one of the liveliest and busiest tourist spots on the island. It is hard to miss as it is the largest hotel in the area. There are lots of shops, tourist bars and restaurants to keep holidaymakers busy here although there isn't much in the way of Spanish culture or sightseeing.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 530 rooms and several categories including A, B, C, family rooms, junior suites and suites. The main difference is in the size and the location of the rooms. Most of the rooms have been renovated and look a lot fresher and more contemporary. The floors are now tiled instead of carpeted and the curtains and bed spreads have been changed. The new design has been inspired by a beach house look with white washed furniture, rattan chairs and blue patterned soft furnishings. The higher categories have flat screen televisions and tea and coffee-making facilities. The bathrooms all have bath tubs and are fairly spacious with own hotel brand amenities. All rooms have a balcony, although as they are quite close together you mustn't be afraid of making friends with the neighbours! As the rooms are arranged in a horseshoe, all have a view of the beach and the rooms lower down have a pool view. The most popular rooms are of category A and B as they are roomier with extras like bathrobes and slippers.

The hotel also has five rooms that have been fitted out for people with restricted movement or who are in a wheelchair.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Los Jameos is one of the largest resorts in Puerto del Carmen, occupying a total of 55,000m˛. The 530 rooms, offering a total maximum capacity of 1200, are divided up into six buildings all named after a Canary Island. The Tenerife block is the nearest one to the reception and to most of the facilities. The hotel has a large car park. The large Canary Island style lobby with its wooden balustrades and galleries has seating situated all around the potted plants placed in the centre. The reception is to the right of the entrance after the small shopping arcade. Up the stairs there is a small museum displaying traditional Canary Island culture. Downstairs, on the ground floor is where you will find the restaurant and the pool. The other accommodation blocks are scattered across the grounds. For guests wishing to sunbathe in the nude, there is solarium closed off away from curious eyes. Beyond this area you will find the door to the beach which is operated with a room key for security reasons. This door gives out onto the promenade that lines the beach across Puerto del Carmen. Otherwise in terms of facilities you will also find four tennis courts and squash courts in very good shape, a large bar-lounge across from the restaurant as well as a lobby bar where there is live music on some evenings. There is also a mini club. For families with messy children there is a launderette next to the spa which is on the ground floor. There is also a gym that is free to use for guests as well as a sauna and Jacuzzi.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The restaurant caters for a maximum of 200 guests at a time which if the hotel is full is a bit of a stretch. We therefore recommend that during high season (July and August) you stay on a bed and breakfast basis and make the most of the island by eating out. Otherwise the restaurant has three parts to it; an interior section, an exterior terrace and an interior terrace. Be ready to brave the hustle and bustle of hungry holidaymakers! A buffet is on offer for all three meals. On Sundays there is a cava breakfast. The hotel also does a range of formulas including bed and breakfast, half-board and full-board.

    Beach 7.45 /10

In Lanzarote all beaches are public so Los Jameos doesn't have a particular area that is reserved for its guests. There is however a private company that rents out deck chairs. The beach, Playa de los Pocillos, is the largest beach in the area and is very popular especially in the summer. The water tends to be relatively calm; however bathers should be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty. The beach is otherwise clean and sandy.

    To know

The hotel opened in 1995 and is in constant renovation although not all works cause a disturbance to the guests. Los Jameos is part of Seaside Resorts based in Gran Canaria.

The hotel has started a 'Mange-Tout' workshop for children during the school holidays to educate children about healthy eating. You can find out when the next workshop will be starting by enquiring with the hotel directly.

The Sol Lanzarote is situated in Puerto del Carmen, one of the liveliest tourist spots on the island. The hotel is a typical resort and is by the beach. The Sol is a good choice if you are used to Sol branded hotels and if you like to have all the usually resort facilities on your doorstep. The hotel has special 'Flintstone' themed rooms especially for families which go down a treat with young children. Otherwise, it has to be said that the style of the hotel is fairly drab, especially due to its large imposing concrete structure.

The Paraiso is a large all-inclusive resort that feels slightly impersonal and the decor needs updating. However, on the positive side, it has a good range of facilities including three restaurants and four pools. The hotel is also within walking distance of the beach, Playa de los Pocillos. The resort is ideal for families wishing to have all the expected facilities and to stay in a lively area.

The VIK San Antonio is somewhat of a landmark on the island as it was the second hotel to be built back in the early seventies. The hotel still proves to be popular and has a strong Irish fan base. The resort is fairly large and has all the facilities one might expect from a resort of this style. The service here is extremely friendly, which, along with its two pools, is a real added bonus. The hotel is ideal for families or elderly people wishing to be at a no-fuss hotel with all the usual facilities and close to the action of Puerto del Carmen and the beach.

The Riu Olivina is one of two Riu hotels on the island. Although the service is good, the rest is not quite up to scratch. The interiors are garish and outdated; it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the hotel is in dire need of a refurbishment. However, it is functional and has all the facilities one would expect from an all-inclusive hotel. The gardens separating the two parts of the hotel make for a nice break from the crowded swimming pools, especially during high season.
