The VIK San Antonio is somewhat of a landmark on the island as it was the second hotel to be built back in the early seventies. The hotel still proves to be popular and has a strong Irish fan base. The resort is fairly large and has all the facilities one might expect from a resort of this style. The service here is extremely friendly, which, along with its two pools, is a real added bonus. The hotel is ideal for families or elderly people wishing to be at a no-fuss hotel with all the usual facilities and close to the action of Puerto del Carmen and the beach.

    Location 7.0 /10

The VIK San Antonio is situated along Playa de los Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen, one of the liveliest and busiest tourist spots on the island. It is hard to miss as it is one of the largest hotels in the area. There are lots of shops, tourist bars and restaurants to keep holidaymakers busy here although there isn't much in the way of Spanish culture or sightseeing.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The 331 rooms are arranged into seven wings and are split into four categories: standard double, family, junior suite and suite. The rooms are all decorated the same and are all on the smaller side ranging from 21m for a standard double, 26m for a family room, 36m for a junior suite, to 54m for a suite. The rooms are further split by view - half face the sea and the other half, the car park. Having a sea view is worth the extra. The rooms have white walls and grey tiled floors with yellow and blue bedspreads to match the curtains. All rooms have a balcony, flat screen televisions (with 38 channels in a variety of languages including three or four in English), a safe and mini bar. All bathrooms have bath tubs and own-brand amenities. The suites have a sofa bed that sleeps two extra. One of the wings is nicknamed the 'sun wing' - here the rooms have good sun exposure throughout the day but they get booked up quite quickly so be fast!

    Overview 7.45 /10

VIK San Antonio is the chain's resort complex on the island. A fairly large complex, it is situated in the island's liveliest area, Puerto del Carmen, and along the area's largest beach, Playa de los Pocillos. Upon arrival you will notice the driveway and the small car park out front. Inside, the lobby is light and spacious. The reception desk is to the left and the rest of the hotel continues down the stairs straight ahead. The hotel feels a little like a cruise liner due to its many different levels and balustrades. The hotel evening bar is the most impressive area of the hotel due to its sheer size - it is huge and seats 400 people - it is full every night. There is evening entertainment here, ranging from live shows to discos, every evening from 9:00pm.The hotel dcor is plain but the plastic flower arrangements spread all over the hotel brings warmth and colour. Outside there are a couple of terraces, a main terrace outside the bar and a lower terrace downstairs by the pool. The second pool is found on an upper level of the left hand side wing. The pleasant aspect of the hotel is that it is right on the beach - parents must however be vigilant as there is no fence around the hotel on the beach side. To the right hand side of the pool, there are peaceful gardens with labelled plants to teach guests about wildlife. Here there is no sound but that of the ocean's waves. Parents will be glad to know that there is an elaborate kids' club with a fun-looking outdoor playground and sports fiends will be relieved to know that there is a fair sized gym with a mix of equipment that looks like it has seen its day and brand new additions.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The restaurant is another huge affair. Despite its size, an effort has been made to make the restaurant feel homely by adding plastic flower arrangements and soft music. The staff is very lively and friendly here, resulting in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There is a rolling menu that changes every two weeks and there are several themed nights per week - these tend to vary so it is best to enquire at reception for details. As far as meal plans go there is no all-inclusive formula although guests can choose between bed and breakfast, half board and full board.

    Beach 7.20 /10

In Lanzarote all beaches are public so the VIK San Antonio doesn't have a particular area that is reserved for its guests. There is however a private company that rents out deck chairs. The beach, Playa de los Pocillos, is the largest beach in the area and is very popular especially in the summer. The water tends to be relatively calm; however bathers should be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty. The beach is otherwise clean and sandy.

    To know

VIK San Antonio is part of the VIK hotel group. In Lanzarote there are two other hotels of the same group: VIK Coral Beach in Playa Blanca, which is more of a bungalow complex (see our review of this hotel) and Villa VIK, close to the capital (see our review of this hotel). The chain also has hotels on other Canary Islands as well as in the Dominican Republic.

The VIK San Antonio opened back in 1972 and was the second hotel to be built on the island. It underwent a refurbishment in 2001 to 2003. The hotel is popular all year round; it is however worth noting that it has a firm client base made up of elderly people during off-peak seasons.

The staff here is surprisingly loyal to the hotel - you will be surprised to know that most management staff has been at the hotel between 10 and 35 years! This gives the staff a sense of ownership which is reflected in the good service provided.

The Riu Olivina is one of two Riu hotels on the island. Although the service is good, the rest is not quite up to scratch. The interiors are garish and outdated; it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the hotel is in dire need of a refurbishment. However, it is functional and has all the facilities one would expect from an all-inclusive hotel. The gardens separating the two parts of the hotel make for a nice break from the crowded swimming pools, especially during high season.

Otherwise, it has to be said that the style of the hotel is fairly drab, especially due to its large imposing concrete structure.
