The large resort, formerly the Grand Oasis Marien, was built in 2001, renovated in 2008, and is a member of the Spanish hotel group, Globalia. It includes 584 rooms in three-storey buildings. Well planted flowery lanes and palm-tree lined lawns help to break up the monotony of the concrete structure. The lobby sets the tone with a large open thatched roof pavilion. Clean, fresh and well maintained, the resort is one of the best we have reviewed so far.
In terms of facilities, a lagoon swimming pool with its fountains, water hoses, cascades and wooden bridges, provides a pleasant backdrop for sunbathing. Around the pool there is a solarium terrace with deck-chairs, palm-leaf sun shades and showers. Beach towels are supplied on site for free. The children have their own paddling pool (and a proper swimming-pool at the beach's mini-club). The swimming pool bar is open from 10:00am till midnight. There is also a giant chess board.
It includes numerous boutiques, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, game areas for children, banking establishments and a medical centre that stays open 24/7, all located in the Plaza shopping centre, some five minutes away on foot. A very beautiful 18-hole golf course, designed by the famous American architect Robert Trent Jones, is located across the road that runs in front of the hotel. The Ocean World Adventure Park (where you can swim with dolphins) is only 40 minutes away, six miles from Puerto Plata. Located directly on the beach and facing the sea, there is a particularly well-equipped children's club with its own pool, a mini billiards table, a mini football table and a trampoline.
Sports fans will like the sports bar, which stays open 24/7. You can play pool, table football or follow sporting events on large flat-screen TVs. The nightclub opens its doors from 11:00pm to 2:00am. The establishment also includes a casino. There is a large amphitheatre where shows are staged under an open palapa, next to the main buffet. The four conference rooms have a capacity of 400 people.
