Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Gabbiano is located next to Marina di Pulsano beach, and exudes a vaguely magical aura that adds colour to its white walls and shapes them into baroque forms. A beautiful garden dotted with palm trees and swimming pools splits the establishment into two separate sections: the 'classic' area and more recently added 'comfort' area. Although it is described as a hotel, the Gabbiano can be considered in all respects as a holiday club, given the organised entertainment on offer.

    Location 9.96 /10

The Gabbiano is just next to Marina di Pulsano beach, in the northern part of Salento, quite close to Taranto but quite a long way from the splendours of Gallipoli. It is an ideal location from which to explore the countryside (you can visit the region where the famous 'trulli' houses stand, for example) or for discovering the Adriatic coast.

The hotel is 48 mi from Brindisi airport and 79 mi from Bari Palese airport.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The Gabbiano has a total of 88 guest rooms divided between the two buildings mentioned above: the 'classic' building, which is the central block, and the 'comfort' building, which was built more recently at the end of the garden in a more peaceful, private setting.

The layout of the rooms is both sensible and functional. Just like the rest of the establishment, they have a rather refined feel dominated by the white decor and soft pastel shades of mainly yellow and green. The facilities in all the rooms include a television, telephone, mini-bar and a good range of hospitality products. Unfortunately, there are no balconies. The bathrooms do not disappoint, and match the style of the bedroom area.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The hotel is separated from Marina di Pulsano beach by no more than a road. The undulating lines of the design recall the baroque style typical of Lecce, and make the place look like an elaborate wedding cake rising out of the green garden. There is a covered car park available for guests to use, so you can leave your car with a minimum of hassle before entering the plush setting of the hotel, where white is the dominant colour and the enchanting sky blue touches add a hint of magic.

A luxuriant garden dotted with palm trees and a space set apart for summerhouses and swimming pools separates the two buildings that make up the Gabbiano. The 'classic' central building is where you will find the reception, restaurants, bar, 58 guest rooms and various spaces given over to leisure pursuits and business (a meeting room, a television room and a games room). The 'comfort' building was designed as a kind of courtyard overlooked by the hotel's 30 additional guest rooms, and is located at the end of the garden, in a more secluded spot. The Gabbiano reopened in 2001 after a complete renovation, but the 'comfort' extension was only added in 2005.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The hotel has three restaurants, which are located in three separate dining rooms, each with a different name. 'Sala Moresca' is used for banquets and is also open to people not staying at the hotel, available for them to book for major celebrations. 'Sala Aragonese', which is on the lower ground floor, is where breakfast is served. Finally, lunch and dinner are served to hotel guests in 'La Corte', next to reception, which has been romantically covered with a wood and crystal ceiling.

At breakfast, you can enjoy homemade dishes like plum cakes, muffins and other kinds of cakes baked by the hotel chefs. Lunch and dinner are served a as buffet, with a choice of three different starters and main courses, which always include one typical local dish and one 'light' option. There is a different 'baby' menu for children every day. There are also various hors-d'œuvres, vegetables and desserts to choose from. The hotel organises two special evenings. The first has a local theme, serving regional dishes and a buffet of Mozzarella cheese and other dairy products; the second is the gala night, when you can enjoy table service and beautifully presented dishes like scialatielli pasta with lobster, or crayfish, lemon and prawn risotto. Later, the cake is cut next to the swimming pool and accompanied with verrines and Prosecco.

It is no accident that the wine list only contains vintages from the Puglia region, the intention being to promote the wine produced in this very fertile part of Italy. Indeed, the cuisine served at the Gabbiano also pays homage to the local area in its use of another of Puglia's main products, olive oil, which can be enjoyed at the buffet in various different forms and flavours.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The hotel enjoys direct access to the beach, although it is separated from the sea by a road. To overcome this, an underground walkway has been built to give guests the fastest possible route down to the sand. The beach overlooks a pretty bay, and there is a stretch of sand reserved on the right-hand side for guests staying at the hotel. There is also a diving centre here.

    To know

Most of the guests at the Gabbiano are Italian, although there is also a small proportion of visitors from other countries, including France, Belgium and Switzerland. This place might refer to itself as a hotel, but in reality is a holiday club through and through, complete with the organised entertainment usually found at such establishments. As such, you will need to buy a Club Card, which costs around £36 a week. If you splash out on the Quota Prestige card (about £62 a week), you can enjoy additional services, such as, for example, a place under the first row of parasols on the beach, some traditional biscuits on arrival, a bottle of Rosa del Golfo Prosecco rosť wine, and the option of checking out of your room at 2:00pm instead of 10:00am on the day of your departure.
