Opened in October 2010, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is a brand new establishment which has taken up residence in the former Moon Palace, built in 2008. Part of the Mexican Palace Hotels group, it has 1,780 guest rooms spread across eight 3-storey buildings classed by theme (guitar, piano, drums, trumpet, harmonica, saxophone, percussion, etc.). The complex is absolutely huge, a real town with its own casino (the largest in the Caribbean at 45,000m²), nightclub, dozens of bars and restaurants of all sorts, shopping centres galore, and the largest spa in the Caribbean - 6,000m²! The 'Hard Rock' tone is set from the moment you enter the lobby, with a giant guitar behind reception, portraits, musical instruments, records and various objects from John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith, Jim Morrison and Bob Marley. You can buy souvenirs at one of the two Rock Shops. The overall feel is an AC/DC-style musical atmosphere.
The first building does not hold any of the guest rooms but rather the shops, bars, restaurants and the casino, the entrance to which is guarded by an imposing limousine that once drove Madonna. If you exit the building on the other side you arrive on a panoramic terrace overlooking the guest rooms and the sea. This is where you really grasp the enormity of the resort, which extends right up to the sea that can be seen in the distance! Luckily, the whole site is covered in a welcome greenness: a river, a pond crossed by a bridge, gardens, lawn, palm trees, etc. Among the many swimming pools that line the complex, the Eden pool (topless!) and the children's pool (a sort of water park with its two water slides and its integrated playground) are the ones that stand out.
