    Situated next to Bavaro beach, in the heart of Punta Cana's famous tourist zone and its 25 mi of beaches, between the Caribbean sea and the Atlantic ocean, on the Southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, the Barcelo Dominican Beach is located 4 hours from the capital of Santo Domingo by road (130 mi), 2 hrs from La Romana airport (65 mi), and half an hour from Punta Cana international airport (13 mi).

    With tiled floors, the rooms of the Barcelo Dominican Beach have character, with their tropical style, yellow pastel walls and naive art pictures. They have satellite television (49 channels), a safe (used for free), a mini-bar fridge included (water, beer, fizzy drinks) and restocked daily, discrete individual air conditioning and a fan, telephone, wireless internet access (at an extra cost), as well as a large balcony arranged with a washing line, two chairs and a round white plastic table. The bathroom contains a bathtub equipped with a flexible shower, toilet, welcome products, a hair dryer, a magnifying mirror and tissues. Something a little strange; the tea and coffee making facilities are in the bathroom!

    The Barcelo Dominican Beach belongs to the Spanish chain 'Barcelo hotels and Resorts'. Built in 1998, it was renovated in 2007. The complex is made up of 6 buildings with two to three floors with no lifts and orange pink facades, housing 611 rooms in the heart of a tropical garden with fountains and small flowered pathways. The whole complex is made up of 9 buildings housing 731 rooms. While wandering around this tropical garden, you will come across an air-conditioned room with 12 computers with internet access! Open between 9.00 am and 7.00 pm, the swimming pool is 1m65 deep. It is accessed via a gentle slope, like the beach. Decorated with a fountain in the shape of a mushroom and an island with a coconut tree planted in the middle of it, it also has a pool for the children. The sun bathing area has deckchairs, parasols made from palm leaves, and showers. Towels are provided when you get there, free of charge. In the evening, shows take place in the large theatre which is able to accommodate up to 250 people at a time and is surrounded by a lake.

    With nine restaurants including six a la carte and three buffets, you will be spoilt for choice at the Barcelo Dominican Beach. There are the Japanese, Mexican, Brazilian, and seafood (located directly on the beach) restaurants, as well as the Italian and Spanish restaurants at the neighbouring Barcelo Cana. The main buffet, with capacity for 500 guests, is under a large pergola. Breakfast is served between 7.00 am and 10.30 am, lunch between 12.00 pm and 3.00 pm, and dinner between 6.30 pm and 10.00 pm. The food is no better than average and lacks variety. For those who are always hungry, remember that there is the snack bar, open between 10.00 am and 7.00 am, so nearly 24 hours a day. You can then go and relax in one of the resort's seven bars, including the sports bar with its pool table and its wide screen televisions for keeping up with sports events, and the Café, for coffee, tea and little cakes.

    Spa

    Those who like to stay in shape will attend the spa by Métamorphosis regularly. Open from 8:00 am to 8.00 pm, it consists of 7 massage and treatment rooms, two saunas, a Turkish bath, a Vichy shower and a relaxation terrace that affords a superb view of the Bavaro beach.

    Bavaro beach is really exceptional, and is protected by the coral reef. A turquoise blue lagoon, transparent water at 28°C, fine and soft sand that is white as flour and a few coconut trees scattered about serving as natural sunshades; it is difficult not to be seduced by all this! A water sports centre offers various activities from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. You can play beach volleyball. Handy for looking after the children, the kids club is situated directly on the beach. Parasols made from palm leaves are available on the beach, as well as some showers and deckchairs. Some pelicans swirl around above the beach, occasionally diving into the water to try and catch some fish. An area is marked out for swimmers. Peckish? The bar on the beach offers snacks and various drinks between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm.

    The Barcelo Dominican Beach is one half of a complex of two hotels, the other half being the Barcelo Cana. This resort offers a wide range of activities to amuse yourself with, such as its disco, casino, gym, mini-golf, and multisports field. Those who like to stay in shape will also go to the "by Métamorphosis" spa regularly. Open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, it consists of 7 small massage rooms, two saunas, a Turkish bath, a Vichy shower and a relaxation terrace offering a superb view of the Bavaro beach.

    Accommodation Advice:

    None of the rooms are adapted for disabled guests. For lovers on their honeymoon, ask for one of the 12 honeymoon suites: only 50 metres from the sea, they offer superb views of the Bavaro beach and its clear waters. All decorated in white, these rooms have a double basin, a king size four-poster bed, slippers, bath robes, beach towels and the 'must': the large whirlpool bath between the bed and the balcony, to allow you to appreciate the view! Following the announcement of the failure of tour operator Marsans in 2010, the treatment of some of the clients at the Barcelo Dominican Beach left a lot to be desired. Panic-stricken by the announcement of the group's liquidation, the hotel's management turned to the clients and asked them to pay upfront for their holiday! Their passports were confiscated, they were denied access to their rooms and to the restaurants and most slept in the lobby or in the gardens. Elder guests were forced to sleep on benches. This behaviour is of course totally unacceptable, shameful and irresponsible. It is for this reason that we are taking off two points from this hotel and strongly encourage readers to compare the full hotel offering in the Dominican Republic before reserving this establishment. If however, you are still interested in stay at the Barcelo Dominican Beach, make sure that your tour operator is in a solid financial position before making your reservation.
