Located right beside Qameito beach (as its name suggests) near Barahona, one of the best preserved spots in the Dominican Republic, Qameito is a small, unpretentious hotel with two swimming pools, including a large one for children. It is the ideal location from which to set off to explore the wonders of the surroundings: Lake Enriquillo, Bahia de las Aguilas, Oveido Lagoon. You can enjoy local cuisine in its pretty restaurant.

    Location 6.71 /10

On the hillside overlooking Qameito beach in Juan Esteban, just under 11 miles from Barahona in the south-west of the Dominican Republic, the best preserved region in the country. Count on about 3h by car to reach the airport of Santo Domingo, the country's capital.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

Fitted with tiling and white walls, the guest rooms are all different, boasting an original decor based on the theme of the sea, with, in particular, seashells, a painting and some flowers. The wooden furniture (a table, two chairs and storage space) add to their charm. Half of the 24 guest rooms are equipped with air-conditioning doubling as a ceiling fan but that's about it: there's no hair-dryer, television, telephone, Internet, safe or refrigerator. That being said, this isn't the Hilton either, and is a totally acceptable place for the price and the concept of a holiday close to nature and local traditions. None of the rooms have a balcony or terrace but the windows look out over either the sea or the garden. A bottle of water is provided, which is very useful in case of random thirst. A small bathroom includes a toilet, a flexible shower, soap and shower gel.

    Overview 7.45 /10

Built in 1996 and renovated in 2008, the Qameito hotel has 14 guest rooms and is run by its Swiss owner. A large garden extending out to the cliffs overlooking the sea surrounds two swimming pools, including a large one for children. It's a pity that the view of the sea is spoiled by a wire fence! The facilities are limited to a shower and a deckchair. It goes without saying that peace reigns supreme here.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

Local or international cuisine, buffet-style or à la carte, the restaurant at the Qameito caters to all tastes. Able to seat up to 40 guests, breakfast is served here from 7:00am to 10:00am and dinner from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. There is no lunch service, though. Wooden tables and chairs, a wooden ceiling, a large Dominican flag, lambis and other seashells: the decor is typical of the local surroundings, just like the cocktails served from 7:00am to 10:00pm. We recommend the guanabana (or soursoup) juice. The mangu (fried banana puree with cheese and onions) here is excellent.

    To know

Located below the cliff, Qameito beach is 5 minutes away on foot but there is no direct access from the hotel. To get around, do like the locals, use the guaguas (minivans) that serve as taxis! Bear in mind that you won't be able to get a mobile phone signal here. If you have your laptop with you, the Wi-Fi is free in the restaurant.
