    Location 5.0 /10

The hotel is in Geremeas, close to Quartu Sant'Elena. A little under an hour from Cagliari on the secondary road, it is on the coastline in a part of southeast Sardinia that boasts beautiful landscapes. There are lots of little bays in the surrounding area, for example Kala e Moru, which has been awarded the 'blue flag' award by the Italian environmental association, Legambiente, for its clean waters and the preserved natural state of the surrounding area. Visitors here will find a beach of extraordinarily white sand stretching for more than a mile, where the sound of the sea is sure to lull you into a state of relaxation.
Nuraghe Cixilianu is also not far away, and you can visit a few small funeral caves dating back to Neolithic times. Finally, numerous fortifications built during the Spanish period (the 16th and 17th centuries) are worth a visit, in particular the Capo Boi Tower and Fortezza Vecchia.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

All of the guest rooms in the hotel are decorated in an old fashioned, understated style.
The unpolished stone floors, high bed, and forged iron headboard give the rooms a monastic feel, but they have also been adapted to the needs of guests staying in a hotel.
The result is a mix of old and new, so the wooden ceiling and hewn stone floors are complemented by a wide range of amenities, including air-conditioning, satellite television, a telephone, and a safe, which is provided on request. Divided into several categories (standard, superior, junior suite, and classic suite), the guest rooms at Il Monastero all overlook the courtyard, which used to be where the farm workers would congregate but is now a spot where utter silence reigns. In the evening, it feels like you are alone on the island, and in the morning you are woken by birdsong... Pure relaxation is the only way to describe a holiday here.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The stone walls and traditional bricks made of earth and straw, called 'ladini', are just a few of the details that make this such a picturesque setting.
Indeed, the aim of the renovations carried out on the establishment was to preserve, as much as possible, the special atmosphere which reigns over the premises.
The entire hotel therefore features raw materials, spaces organised in a simple manner, and uncomplicated decor. The style could be described as half-way between a Scottish castle and an old monastery.
Outside, there are a few surprises in store, for it is here that most of the modernisation work has gone on. In the garden, there is a superb swimming pool provided with deckchairs and showers, and several pieces of antique farm machinery are on display a little further off.

The rates deserve a special mention, because we thought they were particularly reasonable for such an original hotel. The standard rooms cost between 36 and 50, superior rooms between 40 and 54, and the suites (both junior and classic) between 50 and 77.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The restaurant is a large room with hanging candelabra chandeliers, which lend the space a particularly austere feel.
It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and offers a typical range of dishes including meat and fish specialities. As you will find in many hotels in Sardinia, there is a real emphasis on local dishes prepared using fresh ingredients and served with a smile.

    Beach 7.45 /10

The closest beach to the hotel, 'Kala e Moru' beach, is about 400m away. A public stretch of sand more than a mile long, it presents an alternative to the many little coves located about 12 mi away.
It takes about a quarter of an hour to reach these spots by car and the trip is worthwhile because of the pristine condition of the natural surroundings. At the beach, there is a bar and a centre where deep-sea diving equipment can be hired.

    To know

This hotel's history is unique. Apparently, the monastery was founded by a community of monks who arrived here in the 19th century, with the land later being converted into farmland.
The Il Monastero of today is the result of painstaking renovations, and traces of its past can still be seen in both its architecture and its outdoor spaces. For example, citrus trees grow behind the buildings and the materials used for the renovations were chosen to match those of the original structure.
