Being the oldest hotel in Quebec, it'll come as no surprise that the decor here is pretty olde-worlde, but then that's why people come here. The Clarendon is renowned for its jazz evenings and attracts a clientele in search of an authentic period setting right in the centre of the city. Having said that, the rooms are not quite up to scratch and the quality of the breakfast can't even be compared to that of the evening meal - what a perplexing contrast!

    Location 9.0 /10

The Clarendon stands at the heart of the hustle and bustle of Quebec city, with restaurants, bars, and various tourist attractions all within walking distance.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The guest rooms are perfectly clean but the decor is rather old-school, and whilst some of the hotel's features only add to its charm, others make it look all the more outdated. All reasonably sized and suitably equipped (minibar, television, and even a Hi-Fi system in the Superior rooms), there's really nothing to fault. The size of the room depends on the category, but that's only natural if you're paying more for a larger room. The bathrooms in the rooms in the lower categories are rather disappointing and have shower tubs that could really do with changing. The Superior rooms, on the other hand, come with a whirlpool bath! The aged polystyrene ceilings in the bathrooms look like they could fall in on you at any moment, but on the plus-side, the organic citrus hospitality products are worth taking with you when you leave.

    Overview 7.45 /10

The hotel occupies a wonderful old building and once inside you'll feel this period ambience throughout. The whole place is designed with oodles of charm and good taste, aided by the period furniture, decor, and ambience. The only thing that's truly modern is the service, which isn't necessarily a good thing, as you're likely to find it slow and rather distant. The rather dark reception area opens into the lounge, where the old photographs on the walls, brass light fittings, Art Deco lights, and comfortable old sofas are the perfect match for the jazz music playing in the background. Adjacent to this cosy lounge area you'll find the bar, renowned throughout the city for its Friday and Saturday night jazz evenings when various well known artistes come here to perform.
Other than these relaxation, dining, and bar areas, the only other communal area at the hotel is the gym on the ground floor.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The restaurant at the hotel is open to both guests and the general public, and has a very good reputation. It is everything you would expect of such an institution, with a selection of original high quality dishes on offer, all served by a staff displaying manners you would have expected back in the day. The floral carpet and wooden furniture give the place a truly unique and 100% authentic feel. A 4 course set menu (soup, starter, main course, and dessert) is available for $18-31 and most of the dishes served here are prepared using local produce. Even the most discerning of palates will find the cuisine here original and delicate, from the salmon with grapefruit to the duck tartare with honey - truly delicious! For those who are watching what they eat, you'll find a small heart-shaped symbol next to the health-conscious dishes that are low in fat.
Moving on to matters not so pleasant...breakfast! However much you might have enjoyed your meal the night before, you're sure to be disappointed come morning. Breakfast consists of very weak coffee, rubbery croissants, and a selection of fruit thrown together in some sort of salad in syrup that has come straight out of a tin. And that's not all - if you want an espresso there'll be an extra charge!

    To know

The guest rooms ending in 09 are located at the corners of the building and are far brighter and have better views than the others.
The hotel has a car park that costs 25 dollars (nearly 16) for 24 hours - that's over a dollar an hour!
