Al Hamra Fort used to be a part of the Al Hamra hotel complex of three hotels located close to the Hamra Golf Resort. The Fort Hotel is a large impersonal concrete structure located on a long strip of beach that is shared with neighbouring hotel Al Hamra Palace. Designed around the theme of Iranian wind towers that are dotted around a well planted garden, the hotel, for its size, is well appointed. The resort is ideal for families on a budget and with teenage kids.

A resort that's right on the beach with accommodation dotted around a well-planted garden.

    Location 8.38 /10

The resort is located in the south of Ras al Khaimah next door to Al Hamra Palace hotel and the Banyan Tree (see our review). RAK being built in the desert remains a desert town without many attractions but with lots of shoreline and desert safari terrain. The resort is right on the beach, one of the best in the Emirates.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

In total there are 250 rooms and 15 suites. Guests staying at Al Hamra Fort come for the villa accommodation, which is spacious and not far from the beach. The villas are located in the two-storey wind tower structures. Guests have the choice between a garden or superior villa rooms, with the latter being closer to the beach. The resort has also added a separate wing of rooms located in an enormous building that recalls a cruise liner.

Unlike in the old rooms, the villa rooms are generally spacious, quite plain but having undergone a recent refurbishment, they have attractive hardwood furniture. All rooms have a sea or garden view, a private terrace or balcony, a shower cabin or bathtub, a safe, television, mini bar. All rooms have wireless internet (at an extra fee).

There is also 24-hour room service.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Originally open in 2000, the hotel was part of the same company as its neighbours, however the three properties were split up three years ago. There are also rumours of the hotel becoming a Hilton.

The hotel lobby leads to Al Jazeera Arabic restaurant and to the garden when most of the accommodation is. The reception is tiny and can get very crowded especially during check-in in high season (school holidays mainly). The interiors throughout most of the hotel are old-fashioned and tired punctuated with mock leather Chesterfield sofas and garish paintings of Bedouin desert scene.

The hotel has a large car park outside the main reception building. To the right of the hotel building is a golf course. In terms of other facilities, the hotel also has a nightclub, beach bar, a gym, Jacuzzi, tennis courts, mini-golf and a kids' club. There is also a main pool lining the beach in the same area at Le Chalet and the kids' club. Here, the hotel also has a beach barbecue every weekend during peak season (usually the summer holidays).

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotel has three restaurants, Al Shamal where each meal is served as a buffet, the international al fresco option, Le Chalet, and for Lebanese cuisne, there is the Al Jazeera outlet adjoining the reception. For drinks guests have the choice between the beach bar, the Scirocco English pub and the resort's Malibu nightclub.

    Beach 9.70 /10

The hotel shares the long strip of sandy beach with its neighbour, Hotel Al Hamra Palace, which hosts some very lively beach parties on Friday nights. The beach here is one of the best in the Emirates. There is also a beach bar open throughout the day for drinks and snacks. Various water sports are also on offer in the lagoon (shared with neighbouring Banyan Tree).

    To know

The hotel attracts mainly a German clientele - most of the signage around the hotel is in fact in German.

Not to be confused with the Bin Majid Beach Resort, the Bin Majid Beach Hotel is located on the beach about a ten-minute drive from Ras al Khaimah city centre. The hotel lacks atmosphere but the advantage is that it's very quiet. The rooms are nothing to write home about, if not a little out-dated and garish in style. The highlight of the hotel is that it is right on the beach.

Although the standard of hotels in Ras al Khaimah isn't particularly high to start with, the Ras al Khaimah Hotel (operated by Hansa Resorts) is one of the worst of the bunch. Dirty, garish and generally in desperate need of complete refurbishment, it's a wonder the hotel is even still open and operating under the current conditions. The hotel is located close to Ras al Khaimah city centre up on a slight hill that looks out over the lake and mangrove, which can be seen from the back of the restaurant squatting on the hill by the pool. The RAK Hotel isn't somewhere you would spend your holidays - at best you might spend a night or two if desperate. The worse of it is the 'health' club and restaurant with special mention of the terrible breakfast - be warned, this is not one would imagine to be a "boutique hotel", as mentioned on the hotel's Facebook page.

The Mangrove Hotel is a city hotel located close to the lake and the Manar Shopping Mall. Although the hotel isn't on the beach, it is a five-minute drive away. The hotel is fairly contemporary with strong modern Arabic influences, which might not cater to all tastes. Due to the hotel's spacious and comfortable rooms, it has welcomed a fair range of guests from large families to the Iraqi football team.

The Khatt Springs by Golden Tulip is located close to the Hajar Mountain range and has a somewhat original shape. A kitsch, tired-looking fortress made of pink glass and aluminium, guests who stay here must be warned about the particularities of the hotel's design - inside and out. Inside the décor is plainer but non-descript and somewhat grim. The hotel attracts a local clientele mainly from the UAE or from around the Gulf. The main draw are the views of the surrounding mountains, which change colour as the sun makes its way from east to west.

The City Hotel is a non-descript tower that stands just across the main shopping centre in Ras al Khaimah city centre. Not quite where one would expect to spend the holidays, as the name hints, the hotel is more of a stopover city hotel rather than a luxury affair with all the mod-cons. Despite its more than dubious décor, the staff is so friendly and helpful that it's hard not to come out smiling.

There are three Hilton hotels in Ras al Khaimah, two of which are in the main city area and one which is on the beach. The Hilton Ras al Khaimah Hotel, as the name suggests, is in the centre across a garden from the Hilton Doubletree. Although Hilton has a loyal following of returning guests, the City hotel was without hesitation one of the worst we have ever visited in our five years at Easyvoyage. A hotel that has outstayed its welcome in Ras al Khaimah, its building is dated, the interiors are dated, the pool area is grubby, the food is awful and the rooms are dirty. Having spoken to guests staying at the hotel, we are not alone to hold a negative opinion of the hotel. Having said this, we heard rumours that the hotel is due for a complete refurbishment in 2013. In its current state, we would advise our readers to avoid this hotel altogether as it was far below standard for a Hilton.

The Banyan Tree Ras al Khaimah Beach is one of two Banyan Tree hotels in the emirate. Just as luxurious as its sister hotel in the desert, the Banyan Tree al Wadi, the beach property is all the more exclusive due to its being accessible via a two-minute boat ride from the mainland as it is located on a sand bar in the Arabian Sea. A small boutique hotel that is ideal for spending some time catching up on your sun tan for a weekend. As the hotel is so small, there isn't much to keep guests from exploring outside the hotel, but it makes for a great place to stay for a couple of days - after exploring bustling Dubai for example. The hotel is best-suited to couples looking for a romantic getaway.

The Rotana Cove is one of the best resorts in Ras al-Khaimah (RAK). Built to resemble a small Mediterranean village with beautiful sea views, two very appealing swimming pools and a man made lagoon, the hotel is ideal for guests on a middle-sized budget wanting the best of the sea and pool. Located right on the coast on a hill, the Rotana Cove is the Rotana group's first beach resort as such. The hotel has a relaxing holiday atmosphere despite being more of a resort than a boutique hotel. Ideal for a range of guests from couples to groups of friends and families.
