The City Hotel is a non-descript tower that stands just across the main shopping centre in Ras al Khaimah city centre. Not quite where one would expect to spend the holidays, as the name hints, the hotel is more of a stopover city hotel rather than a luxury affair with all the mod-cons. Despite its more than dubious décor, the staff is so friendly and helpful that it's hard not to come out smiling.

The City Hotel is best for a one-night stopover if on a tight budget.

    Location

City Hotel is located right in the Ras al Khaimah city centre on a strip of shops and across the road from the main shopping centre, the Manar Mall, which has a Carrefour supermarket. If you ask for a room at the back of the hotel and high up, you'll have a view of the Hajar Mountains (as well as abandoned garages). The hotel is 10 minutes' drive from Ras al Khaimah Airport and about an hour's drive from Dubai Airport.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

There are 88 rooms in total spread over eight floors. The rooms are extremely basic, the furniture is totally garish and outdated and the rooms need a good clean. They all have twin beds or twin beds pushed together to form a double bed. All rooms have a balcony, a flat-screen television and a safe. Some have a mini-bar, although you might need to ask at reception for it to be filled. All rooms have a telephone, although ours didn't work. The rooms to the back of the hotel have views of the Hajar Mountains. The road running in front of the building and the car garages at the back mean that it can be fairly noisy at night even with the windows closed. There is complimentary water upon arrival. All rooms are air-conditioned. The bathrooms only have showers (as opposed to bath tubs) and a handful of toiletries so if you like being pampered, bring your own.

    Overview 5.70 /10

A building of 10 floors, the City Hotel is the only tower in the area so it is easy to spot it. It also means that there are half-decent views of the surrounding area (which isn't the most charming we've seen). On the ground floor is the reception with a small lobby café. Wi-Fi access works well in this area and is free. Higher up the building is a spa (which was closed when we visited) and on the top-most floor is the restaurant with panoramic views and a small bar across the hall.

The hotel also has a shuttle service that runs guests between the hotel 'beach club', which honestly is one of the most sinister places we have ever seen. The vast empty dining hall was bare of any décor, the terrace and pool area needed a good clean, as did the beach. The food menu was dubious with few items on it - we had the frozen pizza and faoul Madas (and were alright afterwards). The good thing is though, that we soon discovered the Hilton Resort is just next door and has a lovely beach and a few bars along the beach as well as a few restaurants, which are open to non guests.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

Snacks and drinks are served in the lobby café throughout the day into the early evening. Otherwise a small pub opens on the top floor, which is just across the hall from the restaurant, which has an à la carte menu for dinner and a buffet in the mornings; and the breakfast doesn't reflect the surroundings; varied and with food that isn't of the best quality but at least that is cooked onsite, the breakfast buffest wasn't too bad. The restaurant has panoramic views of the area.

    Beach 3.70 /10

The beach is accessible via a decrepit van that is hardly ever on time, but the ride's free. The beach at the hotel's beach club is littered with what looks like medical waste, but just next door is the Hilton Resort, where the beach is a lot nicer.

    To know

The hotel isn't on the beach, but it does have a rather sinister looking beach club, with a beach littered with what looks like industrial and medical waste. A beat-up van takes you to the 'beach club', but the Hilton Resort is just next door, meaning you can get a free ride to a better beach.

Not to be confused with the Bin Majid Beach Resort, the Bin Majid Beach Hotel is located on the beach about a ten-minute drive from Ras al Khaimah city centre. The hotel lacks atmosphere but the advantage is that it's very quiet. The rooms are nothing to write home about, if not a little out-dated and garish in style. The highlight of the hotel is that it is right on the beach.

Although the standard of hotels in Ras al Khaimah isn't particularly high to start with, the Ras al Khaimah Hotel (operated by Hansa Resorts) is one of the worst of the bunch. Dirty, garish and generally in desperate need of complete refurbishment, it's a wonder the hotel is even still open and operating under the current conditions. The hotel is located close to Ras al Khaimah city centre up on a slight hill that looks out over the lake and mangrove, which can be seen from the back of the restaurant squatting on the hill by the pool. The RAK Hotel isn't somewhere you would spend your holidays - at best you might spend a night or two if desperate. The worse of it is the 'health' club and restaurant with special mention of the terrible breakfast - be warned, this is not one would imagine to be a "boutique hotel", as mentioned on the hotel's Facebook page.

The Mangrove Hotel is a city hotel located close to the lake and the Manar Shopping Mall. Although the hotel isn't on the beach, it is a five-minute drive away. The hotel is fairly contemporary with strong modern Arabic influences, which might not cater to all tastes. Due to the hotel's spacious and comfortable rooms, it has welcomed a fair range of guests from large families to the Iraqi football team.

The Fort Hotel is a large impersonal concrete structure located on a long strip of beach that is shared with neighbouring hotel Al Hamra Palace. Designed around the theme of Iranian wind towers that are dotted around a well planted garden, the hotel, for its size, is well appointed. The resort is ideal for families on a budget and with teenage kids.

The Khatt Springs by Golden Tulip is located close to the Hajar Mountain range and has a somewhat original shape. A kitsch, tired-looking fortress made of pink glass and aluminium, guests who stay here must be warned about the particularities of the hotel's design - inside and out. Inside the décor is plainer but non-descript and somewhat grim. The hotel attracts a local clientele mainly from the UAE or from around the Gulf. The main draw are the views of the surrounding mountains, which change colour as the sun makes its way from east to west.

There are three Hilton hotels in Ras al Khaimah, two of which are in the main city area and one which is on the beach. The Hilton Ras al Khaimah Hotel, as the name suggests, is in the centre across a garden from the Hilton Doubletree. Although Hilton has a loyal following of returning guests, the City hotel was without hesitation one of the worst we have ever visited in our five years at Easyvoyage. A hotel that has outstayed its welcome in Ras al Khaimah, its building is dated, the interiors are dated, the pool area is grubby, the food is awful and the rooms are dirty. Having spoken to guests staying at the hotel, we are not alone to hold a negative opinion of the hotel. Having said this, we heard rumours that the hotel is due for a complete refurbishment in 2013. In its current state, we would advise our readers to avoid this hotel altogether as it was far below standard for a Hilton.

The Banyan Tree Ras al Khaimah Beach is one of two Banyan Tree hotels in the emirate. Just as luxurious as its sister hotel in the desert, the Banyan Tree al Wadi, the beach property is all the more exclusive due to its being accessible via a two-minute boat ride from the mainland as it is located on a sand bar in the Arabian Sea. A small boutique hotel that is ideal for spending some time catching up on your sun tan for a weekend. As the hotel is so small, there isn't much to keep guests from exploring outside the hotel, but it makes for a great place to stay for a couple of days - after exploring bustling Dubai for example. The hotel is best-suited to couples looking for a romantic getaway.

The Rotana Cove is one of the best resorts in Ras al-Khaimah (RAK). Built to resemble a small Mediterranean village with beautiful sea views, two very appealing swimming pools and a man made lagoon, the hotel is ideal for guests on a middle-sized budget wanting the best of the sea and pool. Located right on the coast on a hill, the Rotana Cove is the Rotana group's first beach resort as such. The hotel has a relaxing holiday atmosphere despite being more of a resort than a boutique hotel. Ideal for a range of guests from couples to groups of friends and families.
