Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Rotana Cove is one of the best resorts in Ras al-Khaimah (RAK). Built to resemble a small Mediterranean village with beautiful sea views, two very appealing swimming pools and a man made lagoon, the hotel is ideal for guests on a middle-sized budget wanting the best of the sea and pool. Located right on the coast on a hill, the Rotana Cove is the Rotana group's first beach resort as such. The hotel has a relaxing holiday atmosphere despite being more of a resort than a boutique hotel. Ideal for a range of guests from couples to groups of friends and families.

    Location 8.0 /10

The Cove is located in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the seven United Arab Emirates. It is about an hour and a half away from Dubai by car. There are a number of possible excursions guests can book from the hotel; there is also a bus that stops just outside the hotel, which costs a fraction of the price.

Although RAK comprises mainly desert lined by beaches as well as a creek in town, the Cove is a beachside hotel located south of the city centre, which is a 20-minute drive away.

    Accommodation 7.90 /10

There are 204 rooms located higher up the hill as well as villas on the lagoon closer to the beach. There are three main room categories, deluxe, premium and classic. They all look alike in terms of the décor, but the views vary, so make sure you specify which you would like (pool, sea, and 'village'). The rooms all have a domed ceiling, adding a little character to the otherwise simply decorated space. The floors are tiled for coolness, and the colours are a mix of neutrals with a turquoise back wall to brighten the room up. Comfortable and well appointed, the rooms are all equipped with flat screen televisions and all the expected mod-cons. The villas are a lot more spacious with one to five bedrooms and each has its own private pool - although some pools are hidden away from prying eyes, most of the private pools are visible from the rest of the hotel.

    Overview 7.40 /10

The interiors of the hotel have a Moorish influence, however, with beautiful sea views and two large pleasant pools, there is very little reason to stay indoors! The lobby is small and gets very busy with guests checking in, checking out and waiting for excursion buses, so it isn't the best of places to spend time. However, off the circular lobby, there is a bar, a restaurant and stairs also lead down to the health club area. The hotel opened in February 2009 and has been fairly week maintained

The hotel itself is located on a slight hill to maximise the views, which gives the hotel a real holiday edge - great when in need of a break!

In terms of facilities there are six restaurant options, a Bodylines gym, massage rooms, two outdoor pools, a 600-metre long sand bar that serves as a beach, and a kids' club.

    Food and drink 7.50 /10

In total the hotel has six food and beverage outlets. There is also room service for guests not wishing to leave the intimacy of their own room. The breeze bar and shisha terrace lines the front of the hotel and looks out to the pools and the sea. Breeze serves light snacks, as does the Sunset Bar by the upper pool. Cinnamon is the all-day restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and although all meals are served as a buffet, there is also a 24-hour à la carte service available. The Italian restaurant, Basilico, is open for lunch and dinner (Saturday-Thursday). For guests who prefer to spend their day by the lower pool, the Laguna Bay bar serves snacks and drinks, as does Breakers, the hotel beach bar. The hotel has a range of meal plans, from bed and breakfast to all-inclusive.

    Spa 7.4 /10

Rotana hotels don't usually have a spa, but for the resort, guests have access to a gym and also massages (extra cost). The spa is located downstairs from the lobby in the basement; the lack of natural light gives it a slightly dull atmosphere unfortunately. There are also cabanas on the beach where massages can be carried out (although guests must keep in mind that it is very hot).

    Beach 7.70 /10

Like a lot of things in the UAE, the hotel beach is actually mad made. The narrow strip of sand thus creates the lagoon, which although isn't recommended for swimming, creates a tranquil atmosphere. The beach itself is clean as is the transparent warm blue water. There is a beach bar right on the sandbar, as well as sun loungers and parasols. The beach is slightly elevated on a concrete peer covered with sand and there are small staircases leading down to the water. It can get fairly crowded especially as it is so narrow, so don't expect to be on a large sweeping stretch of sand.

    To know

RAK has an airport, but most visitors to the emirate tend to combine it with a stay in Dubai (and therefore fly into and from Dubai, which tends to work out a little less expensive).

Rotana is a local hotel chain that has properties throughout the Middle East, with most of the hotels being in Dubai.

Not to be confused with the Bin Majid Beach Resort, the Bin Majid Beach Hotel is located on the beach about a ten-minute drive from Ras al Khaimah city centre. The hotel lacks atmosphere but the advantage is that it's very quiet. The rooms are nothing to write home about, if not a little out-dated and garish in style. The highlight of the hotel is that it is right on the beach.

Although the standard of hotels in Ras al Khaimah isn't particularly high to start with, the Ras al Khaimah Hotel (operated by Hansa Resorts) is one of the worst of the bunch. Dirty, garish and generally in desperate need of complete refurbishment, it's a wonder the hotel is even still open and operating under the current conditions. The hotel is located close to Ras al Khaimah city centre up on a slight hill that looks out over the lake and mangrove, which can be seen from the back of the restaurant squatting on the hill by the pool. The RAK Hotel isn't somewhere you would spend your holidays - at best you might spend a night or two if desperate. The worse of it is the 'health' club and restaurant with special mention of the terrible breakfast - be warned, this is not one would imagine to be a "boutique hotel", as mentioned on the hotel's Facebook page.

The hotel is fairly contemporary with strong modern Arabic influences, which might not cater to all tastes. Due to the hotel's spacious and comfortable rooms, it has welcomed a fair range of guests from large families to the Iraqi football team.

Designed around the theme of Iranian wind towers that are dotted around a well planted garden, the hotel, for its size, is well appointed. The resort is ideal for families on a budget and with teenage kids.

The Khatt Springs by Golden Tulip is located close to the Hajar Mountain range and has a somewhat original shape. A kitsch, tired-looking fortress made of pink glass and aluminium, guests who stay here must be warned about the particularities of the hotel's design - inside and out. Inside the décor is plainer but non-descript and somewhat grim. The hotel attracts a local clientele mainly from the UAE or from around the Gulf. The main draw are the views of the surrounding mountains, which change colour as the sun makes its way from east to west.

The City Hotel is a non-descript tower that stands just across the main shopping centre in Ras al Khaimah city centre. Not quite where one would expect to spend the holidays, as the name hints, the hotel is more of a stopover city hotel rather than a luxury affair with all the mod-cons. Despite its more than dubious décor, the staff is so friendly and helpful that it's hard not to come out smiling.

The Banyan Tree Ras al Khaimah Beach is one of two Banyan Tree hotels in the emirate. Just as luxurious as its sister hotel in the desert, the Banyan Tree al Wadi, the beach property is all the more exclusive due to its being accessible via a two-minute boat ride from the mainland as it is located on a sand bar in the Arabian Sea. A small boutique hotel that is ideal for spending some time catching up on your sun tan for a weekend. As the hotel is so small, there isn't much to keep guests from exploring outside the hotel, but it makes for a great place to stay for a couple of days - after exploring bustling Dubai for example. The hotel is best-suited to couples looking for a romantic getaway.

There are three Hilton hotels in Ras al Khaimah, two of which are in the main city area and one which is on the beach. The Hilton Ras al Khaimah Hotel, as the name suggests, is in the centre across a garden from the Hilton Doubletree. Although Hilton has a loyal following of returning guests, the City hotel was without hesitation one of the worst we have ever visited in our five years at Easyvoyage. A hotel that has outstayed its welcome in Ras al Khaimah, its building is dated, the interiors are dated, the pool area is grubby, the food is awful and the rooms are dirty. Having spoken to guests staying at the hotel, we are not alone to hold a negative opinion of the hotel. Having said this, we heard rumours that the hotel is due for a complete refurbishment in 2013. In its current state, we would advise our readers to avoid this hotel altogether as it was far below standard for a Hilton.
