The Mangrove Hotel is a city hotel located close to the lake and the Manar Shopping Mall. Although the hotel isn't on the beach, it is a five-minute drive away. The hotel is fairly contemporary with strong modern Arabic influences, which might not cater to all tastes. Due to the hotel's spacious and comfortable rooms, it has welcomed a fair range of guests from large families to the Iraqi football team.

The Mangrove hotel has lovely views of the floating Mangrove on the creek from some of its rooms and its all-day restaurant.

    Location 6.0 /10

The hotel is located in Ras al Khaimah city centre close to Manar and El Safir malls right on the bank of the creek with floating mangrove, which is where the hotel gets its name from. There is a local airport which is a 10-minute drive away but most people tend to combine a few nights' stay in Ras al Khaimah with a stay in Dubai, which is an hour away by car. Although the hotel isn't on the beach, it is a five-minute drive away. The area surrounding the hotel is still being developed, but the small pearl museum is open and is worth stopping by to explore the emirate's pearling heritage.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

In total there are 186 rooms divided up between standard, executive rooms, executive suites and presidential suites. Each category of rooms are decorated differently although the same style runs through them all. Heavily carpeted with either green, grey or dark red swirls the rooms are very cosy despite the modern Arab style that some Western guests might find a little too gaudy. The presidential suites have wooden floors for the most part except for one, which is fitted with striking monochrome carpets. All rooms have flat-screen televisions, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and safety deposit boxes. The lake-facing rooms have great views of the sparse Ras al Khaimah city centre and lake. Some suites have a balcony (guest should enquire about this at the time of booking).

    Overview 6.70 /10

The hotel is an 18-floor tower on the banks of the Ras al Khaimah creek and first opened in 2012 so it is fairly modern. The décor throughout is contemporary although slightly gaudy for western tastes. Guests should expect bright mixes of different textiles, glistening chandeliers, heavy use of mirrors, and lots of heavy fabrics. Overall though, the hotel is very comfortable and clean.

In terms of facilities there is a small outdoor pool, a gym and five food and beverage outlets, which is a huge amount for one hotel in the city. Guests also have access to the Bin Majid Beach hotel's facilities, which is 10 minutes away - a shuttle runs guests between the two hotels throughout the day.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

In terms of food, Mangrove has an unusual variety for Ras al Khaimah. In total it has five outlets including Rainbow, the main restaurant where all three meals are served, the Chinese restaurant, Noodles which is open for lunch and dinner, the Polo bar open from 5:00pm until 2:00am, the pool bar, Blue and the Sidewalk Café just outside the hotel where guests can smoke shisha in the evenings, which opens at 7:00am until 2:00am. The main draw of all the restaurants at Mangrove is the view from each venue, which is lined by a large bay window showing off Ras al Khaimah's lake and mangrove after which the hotel is named. The hotel also has 24-hour room service for guests who don't feel like venturing away from the comfort of their room or suite.

    Beach

The hotel isn't on the beach but there is a free shuttle that runs guests to the sister hotel, Bin Majid Beach, which is a 10-minute drive away.

    To know

The Mangrove is part of the same group as four other hotels in Ras al Khaimah, including Acacia, Nehal and the two holiday resorts, Bin Majid Beach and Bin Majid Resort.

Not to be confused with the Bin Majid Beach Resort, the Bin Majid Beach Hotel is located on the beach about a ten-minute drive from Ras al Khaimah city centre. The hotel lacks atmosphere but the advantage is that it's very quiet. The rooms are nothing to write home about, if not a little out-dated and garish in style. The highlight of the hotel is that it is right on the beach.

Although the standard of hotels in Ras al Khaimah isn't particularly high to start with, the Ras al Khaimah Hotel (operated by Hansa Resorts) is one of the worst of the bunch. Dirty, garish and generally in desperate need of complete refurbishment, it's a wonder the hotel is even still open and operating under the current conditions. The hotel is located close to Ras al Khaimah city centre up on a slight hill that looks out over the lake and mangrove, which can be seen from the back of the restaurant squatting on the hill by the pool. The RAK Hotel isn't somewhere you would spend your holidays - at best you might spend a night or two if desperate. The worse of it is the 'health' club and restaurant with special mention of the terrible breakfast - be warned, this is not one would imagine to be a "boutique hotel", as mentioned on the hotel's Facebook page.

The Fort Hotel is a large impersonal concrete structure located on a long strip of beach that is shared with neighbouring hotel Al Hamra Palace. Designed around the theme of Iranian wind towers that are dotted around a well planted garden, the hotel, for its size, is well appointed. The resort is ideal for families on a budget and with teenage kids.

The Khatt Springs by Golden Tulip is located close to the Hajar Mountain range and has a somewhat original shape. A kitsch, tired-looking fortress made of pink glass and aluminium, guests who stay here must be warned about the particularities of the hotel's design - inside and out. Inside the décor is plainer but non-descript and somewhat grim. The hotel attracts a local clientele mainly from the UAE or from around the Gulf. The main draw are the views of the surrounding mountains, which change colour as the sun makes its way from east to west.

The City Hotel is a non-descript tower that stands just across the main shopping centre in Ras al Khaimah city centre. Not quite where one would expect to spend the holidays, as the name hints, the hotel is more of a stopover city hotel rather than a luxury affair with all the mod-cons. Despite its more than dubious décor, the staff is so friendly and helpful that it's hard not to come out smiling.

Although contemporary it its design, there is no real distinguishing feature but it does have all the essentials.

There are three Hilton hotels in Ras al Khaimah, two of which are in the main city area and one which is on the beach. The Hilton Ras al Khaimah Hotel, as the name suggests, is in the centre across a garden from the Hilton Doubletree. Although Hilton has a loyal following of returning guests, the City hotel was without hesitation one of the worst we have ever visited in our five years at Easyvoyage. A hotel that has outstayed its welcome in Ras al Khaimah, its building is dated, the interiors are dated, the pool area is grubby, the food is awful and the rooms are dirty. Having spoken to guests staying at the hotel, we are not alone to hold a negative opinion of the hotel. Having said this, we heard rumours that the hotel is due for a complete refurbishment in 2013. In its current state, we would advise our readers to avoid this hotel altogether as it was far below standard for a Hilton.

The Banyan Tree Ras al Khaimah Beach is one of two Banyan Tree hotels in the emirate. Just as luxurious as its sister hotel in the desert, the Banyan Tree al Wadi, the beach property is all the more exclusive due to its being accessible via a two-minute boat ride from the mainland as it is located on a sand bar in the Arabian Sea. A small boutique hotel that is ideal for spending some time catching up on your sun tan for a weekend. As the hotel is so small, there isn't much to keep guests from exploring outside the hotel, but it makes for a great place to stay for a couple of days - after exploring bustling Dubai for example. The hotel is best-suited to couples looking for a romantic getaway.

The highlight of the resort is the beach and its weekend beach parties, and its recently refurbished rooms. Ideal for a family that is fond of large resorts and that wants to be on the beach, Al Hamra Palace is impersonal but lively.

The Rotana Cove is one of the best resorts in Ras al-Khaimah (RAK). Built to resemble a small Mediterranean village with beautiful sea views, two very appealing swimming pools and a man made lagoon, the hotel is ideal for guests on a middle-sized budget wanting the best of the sea and pool. Located right on the coast on a hill, the Rotana Cove is the Rotana group's first beach resort as such. The hotel has a relaxing holiday atmosphere despite being more of a resort than a boutique hotel. Ideal for a range of guests from couples to groups of friends and families.
