The large and well-maintained El Greco is located just outside the tourist resort of Rethymnon and is particularly noteworthy for the high quality all-inclusive option it offers. The emphasis on service is undoubtedly one of the hotels strong points, along with its proximity to the sea.

    Location 3.0 /10

The hotel is located just under a mile from Adele, a little over 4 mi east of Rethymnon and around 44 mi from Heraklion International Airport.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The establishment's 333 guest rooms can be split into four different types of accommodation, namely standard rooms and family rooms, which are served by lifts, and standard bungalows and VIP bungalows. All the rooms on the ground floor are referred to as bungalows because they have a terrace and direct access to one of the swimming pools or to the sea. Standard rooms have a floor area of around 264 sq ft whilst the larger family rooms measure about 398 sq ft, and although they are somewhat lacking in the charm department, the rooms, decorated in shades of blue, yellow and pink, are impeccably-kept, with cushions, painted wicker furniture and storage space making for comfortable surroundings. You'll even find fresh fruit, a bottle of water and a bottle of wine by way of a welcome gift! Whilst all the rooms have either a balcony or a terrace, three-quarters of them also have a sea view, and their amenities include a small television broadcasting 20 channels, a safe (charged), central air conditioning, a refrigerator and a telephone. The all-white tiled bathrooms are also spacious, and include a bathtub, a large mirror and a selection of hospitality products.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The various buildings which make up the all-white complex are aligned facing the beach, and provide a harmonious contrast with the blue sea nearby. Great attention is paid to every last detail at the El Greco, even down to the rope lights, and Internet users will undoubtedly appreciate the area designed for them. The large reception is well lit thanks to the numerous picture windows, some of which open onto a large terrace overlooking the sea. Most of the resort's communal facilities are concentrated in this area. The hotel boasts three seawater swimming pools, the largest of which covers an area of 5167 sq ft, as well as a smaller children's one, sheltered from the wind and surrounded by lots of blue and white deckchairs and parasols. Those who take their swimming more seriously, though, will be pleased to know that they can swim uninterrupted lengths to the side of the main building in the long raised pool which seems to blend with the sea below. The charming children's club is open to 4-12 year olds from 10:00am to 2:00pm and from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and is enclosed by barriers and vegetation. A building depicting a row of four colourful houses stands to one side, whilst on the other side, the mini-club takes the shape of a beautiful pirate longboat. There is also a paddling pool and various outdoor games are set out on the lawn, with original games and workshops organised inside. Teenagers have not been left out, either, as they, too, have their own large and well-equipped games room. In terms of fitness facilities, the hotel has a small gym with just five machines, whilst those who would prefer to indulge in a massage will be pleased to know that there is a very committed and enthusiastic masseur on-site. There are even special programmes for pregnant women!

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

A large, stylish cafeteria facing the main swimming pool consists of various sections where you can grab a quick bite to eat or a refreshing drink, and there is even a pancake area. The more formal main restaurant by the entrance is Cretan through and through, with dishes created using ingredients produced by the owner of the hotel himself, including oils, preserves, honey and wine. The restaurant itself is well lit and stretches out before the sea, with the large capacity seating area nicely sectioned off using plants and wrought iron partitions, and the many elaborately-presented dishes on offer will really make your mouth water. Lunch is served between 12:00pm and 2:00pm and consists of a selection of 13 hot dishes as well as a pizza. All the cold dishes, primarily 100% organic salads, are set out on a bed of ice. There is even a wide variety of delicious breads to try. The restaurant opens for all three meals of the day (from 7:30am to 10:30am for breakfast and from 6:30pm to 9:30pm for dinner), though breakfast can also be ordered to your room. Younger guests are catered for in the well-stocked 'tasty corner' which is open from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Theme nights (Italian, Greek, Asian, etc.) are organised twice a week. A third restaurant, the Brasserie, serves fish and seafood dishes and more sophisticated cuisine than that served in the cafeteria. The hotel also has three bars.

    Beach 7.20 /10

The 1312 ft of light brown sandy beach stretching out before the El Greco has been a holder of the Blue Flag award for some years, and has a total of six jetties to prevent the sand from being eroded away by the clear water. There is a little seaweed here and there, and a few flat rocks and pebbles, but nothing that would spoil your bathing. There are also deckchairs laid out just above the beach, at the same level as the beach bar, as the beach itself is not really wide enough to spread out properly. Peace and quiet are guaranteed. Guests at the hotel may arrange to use the motorised water sports facilities just a couple of miles away at the Cretan Palace, which is part of the same chain. Other facilities are available at the far end of the hotel, but if that all sounds too active for you, you could always just take a stroll along the beach to Rethymnon.

    To know

The hotel is open from the end of April to the end of October. It offers a variety of package options, from bed & breakfast to all-inclusive, with the majority of its international clientele being either German or English. Special entertainment is organised for teenagers in July and August.
