The 101 Hotel is the only Icelandic establishment boasting membership of the highly selective "Design Hotels" group, and it is certainly worthy of its place! It opened in 2003 and offers an ultra-trendy, luxurious and contemporary setting at the heart of Reykjavik. It is very popular with international guests and stars passing through the capital, even though it only has 38 rooms. Therefore it is very moderately sized, but this has not stopped it from also providing a restaurant and mini-spa. A great place to stay if you have deep pockets...

    Location 9.19 /10

At the heart of Reykjavik, a stone's throw from one of the busiest shopping streets (Laugavegur street) and not much further from the attractions of the port, the 101 Hotel could not be better located. Allow about one hour to reach the international airport or the famous "Blue Lagoon".

    Accommodation 8.15 /10

It is advisable to reserve in advance if you are hoping to stay in one of the 101's 38 rooms. Five room categories are available: standard, double, deluxe, junior suite and 101 suite. The latter category has had the privilege of hosting such personalities as Jude Law and Leonardo Di Caprio. However, all the rooms are decorated in an uncluttered style combining natural materials (parquet) and transparent, white, grey and black furnishings. You should find all you need, as the rooms are very well equipped with a king size bed in the double rooms, as well as iPod speakers, a safe, DVD player, television, umbrella, bathrobe, slippers, and even a calculator! The mini-bar also deserves a visit, for in addition to the usual snacks and drinks, you can also buy CD's, T-shirts, underwear, adaptors, board games, etc. The bathroom is similarly stylish, with its trendy design (square washbasin, black Italian-style shower or a bathtub in the superior categories), hospitality products, and Blue Lagoon creams for sale. Three of the rooms also have a balcony.

    Overview 9.20 /10

The 101 opened in March 2003, but its look is so modern, it could just as easily have opened yesterday... The building, on the other hand, was built back in 1930, and the older architecture has been retained and enhanced with the very contemporary decor. The hotel's heavy door opens onto an entrance rather like the hall of a classic old building. To its left is a library lounge with an inviting fireplace and magazines and books to browse at your leisure at the wooden tables or sat back on one of the sofas, leather seats or monkey skin chairs that complete the decor. To the right is a little reception area equipped with a black lacquered counter and a collection of works of art. More works by an Icelandic artists adorn the other parts of the hotel, and the town as a whole! The hotel also boasts a swanky mini-spa equipped with everything you need to unwind, including a gym with five machines, a jacuzzi and a sauna. A computer is also provided for guests.

    Food and drink 8.25 /10

Few would contest the claim that the 101 would not be the place it is without its bar-restaurant. It is one of the capital's trendiest hangouts, and even counts the singer Björk as one of its loyal clients! It occupies the space beyond the library lounge and offers a daily menu (weekdays only) and international dishes prepared 'à la carte' in a setting just as stylish as the rest of the common areas, with parquet flooring, a counter, black tables and chairs, white bar stools, and so on... It opens from morning through to evening, and its breakfast is the perfect way to start the day: fresh orange juice, cold cuts of meat, fish, fruit salad, pain au chocolat, etc. Bear in mind there is an extra charge for some of the products, for example the eggs Benedict or omelette and toast.

    To know

The 101 Hotel is an independent establishment and is Iceland's sole representative in the "Design Hotels" group. Its transformation into a hotel is just the latest in a long line of successful makeovers of this building which has, in the past, housed a printing company, nightclub and political party headquarters.
