The Agla is a small 4-star hotel hidden away in a quiet area near the Old Town of Rhodes and just 5 minutes from the new town and its shops, making it the ideal location for combining the beach, shopping and culture. No entertainment is provided at the hotel, so it is not the best place for a long stay with children, however, the establishment is perfectly suited for couples and more generally those just passing through the town for a couple of days.

    Location 8.9 /10

The Agla is located in a modern part of Rhodes, but which is still close to the Medieval Town. Just a stone's throw from the Turkish coast, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed gem is the ideal destination for families and couples. Following the cobbled streets you will pass through doors and arches, cross the many squares and discover hidden courtyards surrounded by Byzantine walls and churches. At nightfall, the many bars and restaurants offering traditional cuisine come to life and the whole town lights up, giving the place a unique and timeless charm. The international airport is a 5 to 10-minute drive from the centre, depending on the traffic, which can be heavy in summer. The sandy beaches of Faliraki and Tsambika are accessible by car in 20 and 30 minutes respectively, whereas those of Ixia and Ialyssos are a mere 5 to 10-minute drive away.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

Small yet sturdy, the Agla has no fewer than 125 rooms, each of which is equipped with central air-conditioning (free from 1st August and 30th September), a (small) plasma-screen television, a mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a telephone, Wi-Fi access (?2 an hour), wooden furniture, a balcony with a table and chairs and a bathroom with a large mirror, hair-dryer, heated towel rail, hospitality products and a bath or shower. As far as decor is concerned, the hotel has opted for simplicity and warm shades, with colourful Greek paintings, yellow walls and yellow, orange and blue bedspreads and curtains. It is worth remembering, though, that not all the rooms have a safe . Those who are lucky enough to have one in their room will need to pay ?5 to use it, whilst others will be charged ?10 for a week or ?15 for 2 weeks.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Far from the massive resorts along the coasts, the Agla stands out for its small-scale amenities. The lobby sets the tone for the rest of the hotel, with its fireplace, numerous chairs and computer station. It is still tiny in comparison with other hotel lobbies, but that is what gives it a more intimate, friendly atmosphere. The swimming pool, bar and restaurant are not much more spacious, but that is far from being a disadvantage. As far as leisure activities are concerned, the hotel has a television room, a pool table and a ping-pong table.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The day begins in the main restaurant on the ground floor, where a small, basic, tiled room with wooden tables and chairs awaits you. An American-style breakfast is served until 10:00am. Guests can grab a bite to eat at the pool bar between 12:00pm and 8:00pm, with a variety of snacks (around ?5 - ?6 each) prepared to order. An evening meal of Mediterranean dishes is served as a buffet between 7:00pm and 9:00pm, although guests may also order à la carte dishes. The rest of the time, juices and cocktails are served at the lobby bar and the pool bar.

    To know

The Agla is regularly renovated but the foundations (dating back to 1966) mean that some noise may filter through from neighbouring rooms. There is no 'all-inclusive' here - the hotel is available on a bed & breakfast or half-board basis only. There's no direct access to the beach either! Guests wishing to enjoy a dip in the sea will have to walk a little or indeed hire a car to reach the more peaceful spots.

Suspended between sea and sky, a short distance away from the lively tourism of the village of Faliraki, the Lucas Cypria is a modern hotel perfect for families or couples anxious to preserve a modicum of peace and quiet on a lively holiday. The only downside of its location is that you won't be able to roll out of the hotel and straight onto the beach...

The Belvedere is located opposite Kanari beach and it is an imposing four-floor building which can initially appear somewhat off-putting. The inside of the building is also lacking in charm, though the hotel does have the significant advantage of being well located and well-equipped for a town hotel. It also offers beautiful views across the sea, particularly at sunset. You are sure to enjoy your stay here, provided that you are not too sensitive to the noise of passing cars! In fact, you will need to cross a rather busy road to reach the beach from here. In short, this hotel is to be recommended to couples (particularly the elderly) or those just passing through the town.

If you had to sum up the Rhodos Beach, the first word to come to mind would be 'simplicity'. It is a reasonably-sized 3-star hotel located facing the sea (and, unfortunately, the road!) with a much more intimate feel to it than most of the island's resorts. There is no organised entertainment, and there are very few facilities, but the peace and quiet, which some may consider to be an advantage, can quickly become frustrating if you have come in search of a lively holiday!

Relying mainly on its all-inclusive formula, the Mareblue Cosmopolitan is a vast holiday playground. The lawns and sun decks of the hotel are filled with deckchairs and guests can enjoy seaside pleasures all day long. It is difficult to find a quiet, isolated corner in this resort. Open since 1996, this huge structure with its imposing architecture is operational during the summer season, from April to October. The clientele is made up of various different nationalities and includes lots of families.

The 5* Ixian Grand was built in 1978 and underwent a complete makeover in 2007, which makes it hard to believe that it is over 30 years old! The new incarnation is designed to a contemporary, designer template. Just a few feet from the beach, the hotel has few sports facilities and not much in the way of organised entertainment and activities. It is therefore best suited to couples without children, or families passing through.
