The Kalithea Mare Palace is located opposite Cape Bodi in an elevated position that offers several unobstructed sea views. The hotel does not have its own beach but shares one with its neighbour, the Kalithea Horizon Royal. The two establishments also have the same reception. The clientele is mostly made up of Germans. Guests don't come here for a quiet and relaxing stay but rather to do some socialising. Given the limited space around the swimming pool, you will probably get to know your neighbours! However, while you are bound to make some acquaintances here, the facilities are disappointing.

    Location 3.41 /10

The Kalithea Mare Palace is located next to the coastal road on the eastern side of the island of Rhodes, in the municipality of Kalithea. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the airport, which is approximately 9 mi away. The historic centre of the city of Rhodes is just under 4 mi away.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The hotel's 222 guest rooms are located in an imposing 3 storey building. One side overlooks the swimming pool, the road, and the car park, while the other overlooks the gardens, with the sea in the background. The standard rooms are unpretentious and not particularly charming. The flower pattern bedspread gives the room an old fashioned look but the level of comfort is good. You will have a television, a fridge, and air-conditioning, but no room service. The floor is covered with a nice carpet, but the tiling in the bathroom is a bit slippery. All of the rooms have a balcony, which varies in size depending on its location.

    Overview 5.70 /10

After being royally ignored at reception, we finally managed to attract the attention of one of the staff members... It has to be said that the size of the reception is much too small compared to the number of guests, so you can easily get swallowed up in the crowd, especially when a big group of holidaymakers arrives. The Kalithea Mare Palace shares its reception with the Kalithea Horizon Royal, which is located below. It is a bright space with a marble floor and 1970's decor, but the smell of damp that has set in is rather unpleasant. The main swimming pool is located outside, next to the road, and the noise of traffic quickly becomes a nuisance. Added to the sound of passing buses and cars is the incessant racket made by the very poorly concealed swimming pool equipment. The rounded pool is surrounded by deckchairs and parasols, which are rather close together and a notice informs guests that deckchairs cannot be reserved with a towel. Beach towels are available at reception in return for a deposit.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The main restaurant, the Thalassa, is open morning and evening. The meals are served as a buffet and the cuisine mostly consists of international dishes. The circular dining room is a gigantic space but given the number of tables and how close together they are, it must get noisy very quickly at mealtimes. The sea theme is very much brought to the fore, especially in the decor, which features wall paintings of fish. Either you like it or you don't! The restaurant would enjoy an amazing view of the sea if it weren't for the building in front, which gets in the way... At midday, you can eat at the Delfinia, the snack bar next to the swimming pool. It has a snack menu and there are also a few dishes at the self-service counter (around £13). The smell of frying food makes an invasion at lunchtime and lingers for some time afterwards, too... The plastic chairs and the relaxed attire worn by guests give the place the look of a canteen rather than a genuine swimming pool restaurant.

    Beach 6.70 /10

The Kalithea Mare Palace does not have its own beach but guests are free to visit the one next to the Kalithea Horizon Royale. However, the walk down the steep path is not for the faint-hearted and the way back is even more gruelling! An alternative is to catch the minibus that provides a shuttle service between the hotel's various facilities. The seaside here is not really a beach, strictly speaking; it is more like a relaxation space in amongst the rocks. You can still bathe in the sea without any trouble though, and the colour of the water is certainly quite tempting. Back on dry land, the setting is peaceful enough for a little siesta, and plastic deckchairs and parasols are provided. Because of the layout of the space, the hotel does not have a water sports club.

In addition to sharing the reception with the Kalithea Mare Palace, guests staying at the Kalithea Horizon Royal can access its neighbour's amenities for no additional charge. However, there is no denying that the Horizon Royal offers a better set of facilities; for example, larger spaces around the swimming pools. Indeed, space is one of the qualities found in abundance at the hotel, but the resulting distances can be trying under the hot sun... To make up for this drawback, a shuttle does the rounds of the hotel on a daily basis, but only during the daytime. Most of the guests staying at the hotel are families, partly because children are well looked after here.

The 4-star Kresten Palace affords beautiful panoramic views of the sea from its hill-top location, and it is a modern yet typically Rhodian establishment which offers a wide variety of sports facilities and entertainment organised by a largely Italian team. There is, of course, a price to pay for such views, this being that the beach (which is surrounded by rocks) is unfortunately a 5 to 10-minute walk down from the hotel, although this also means that it doesn't get too crowded!

The Louis Colossos Beach is a (colossal!) 742 room hotel, 7 mi from the ancient site of the extremely famous Colossus of Rhodes. However, while this wonder of the world only stood for around 60 years, the hotel itself is well set to continue accommodating guests on its 7 floors for years to come... Built some twenty years ago, although the hotel has been updated it lacks somewhat in originality.

If you are having doubts about wearing your flip-flops at the Blue Sea Hotel, the giant aquariums in the lobby (and the fish they contain) will certainly clear that up for you, and, if that's not enough, the views of beautiful Faliraki beach will leave you in no doubt. Located just a few miles from the seaside resort itself and around ten minutes from Rhodes Town, the Blue Sea is a clean and comfortable club-hotel with simple yet modern decor.

From the outside, the Rodos Palace is a massive 17-storey building, impossible to miss from the coastal road that passes in front of it. It's not the most welcoming of places at first glance, but once inside, guests remember that they shouldn't judge a book by its cover. However, the 70s inspired style is very present here, which might not be to the liking of all guests! However, despite its age, the Rodos Palace offers facilities that are suitable for guests of all ages. Interestingly, the hotel has welcomed some very famous guests, such as François Mitterrand and Margaret Thatcher.

The 5* Ixian Grand was built in 1978 and underwent a complete makeover in 2007, which makes it hard to believe that it is over 30 years old! The new incarnation is designed to a contemporary, designer template. Just a few feet from the beach, the hotel has few sports facilities and not much in the way of organised entertainment and activities. It is therefore best suited to couples without children, or families passing through.
